It's like that episode of Star Trek TNG with that "Shaka, when the walls fell" guy. I know most of the words they're using; Just completely lost at the point of it all.
If it helps I find the same issue with American shows/comedians. I get at least half of their references but there are so many references that just never "cross the pond".
