03:17 - The repeating siren sounds like it as a dual nature 1st interpretation - V's time is running out and he has barely any time to think but take a plunge into the chaos to save his life, second being the signifier of level of threat that V is when he enters Arasaka to mow them down. it's literally like V's boss music towards the enemies!
03:38 - This melody on guitar (?) is Johnny's theme, it's creeping in on V's theme, slowly taking it over, like Johnny taking over V's mind inevitably.
God I love this theme, extra love to it because they use the leitmotif of V and Johnny's theme throughout the entire OST suite emphasizing how crucial Johnny and V's bond is and inevitable blending into each other's consciousness affects the people and events around V.

  • @rustle495

"V" theme for me very much feels like a retelling of the main plot. The slow building of hatred and anxiety are Johnny awakening in a world that he hates and V reaching for the starts and failing. The midpoint is them colliding, being forced to become one. And after the beat its the grand ode of violence that they have to become to get through Act 2 and 3 and reach that "World" graffiti on the balcony. All the tarot Graffiti by the way are also fully symbolic and connected to place and circumstances they are found in.
I've also been digging through OST in last 2 months, and honestly all of it is incredible. Whether its instrumentals, especially Rebel Path, or radio tracks made for specific gangs, like Serpant for Valentinos, Resist and Disorder for Maelstrom, and Ratata for Voodoo Boys; or all the Samurai songs - Black Dog, Never Fade Away, Like Supreme - all are fantastic in quality and meaning. Would love to see you discuss any of them.

For all its issues the 2 things Cyberpunk does with flying stars is writing and music. CDPR has always been good at telling a story and if you can get past the game's issues theres a great story there. But also their music is top notch every song has that techno dubstep y feel to it but they all carry different weights and feelings to them and tie into certain scenes incredibly well.

I remember when I first got my hands on the game after waiting 12 years for it. It was surreal booting up the main menu and being greeted with this and nothing but a black title screen. The smash kick at the very beginning fading into the distance immediately made me think of something like the sirens on distant police cars, or like a warning siren that I was entering a dangerous world. Even though there was nothing obvious going on on the screen, somehow it said everything, and I remember sitting there listening to the theme and taking in the moment for like a solid 10 minutes before starting the game. I couldn't believe I was finally playing it.

But I also love how this track in particular has an almost mocking quality to it - like it's a personification of Night City that's toying with you before it chews you up, and spits you out. It's a danse macabre for the post-modern age.

this song really just feels like it embodies the atmosphere of the game so well, like it's so tense and aggressive and definitely carries the vibe of "you are NOT safe" that night city overall gives off. the beginning has a pretty slow build and i do really like how,, distorted? and electronic everything is but you can still kind of make out what it is in the background like the cello/strings and the really gritty sounding guitar. and when the alarm/sirens kick in, it really gives you the feeling of being a dangerous mercenary in an even more dangerous city where chaos and death is kind of everywhere despite the sort of shiny veneer on the surface (which i feel like the opening synth-y electronics carry across well, it's somber but really ominous too.) i also really like how the guitar kicks in and, to me, kinda symbolizes how johnny silverhand just crashes into v's life and changes the trajectory of their story. the way all the sounds feel kind of disjointed at times before combining into this loud, brash almost orchestra is a really nice touch since i feel like it calls back to how johnny and v combine and work as one unit as the story progresses. all this to say, i just really f*ckin love cyberpunk's audio storytelling lol.

Considering the name of the theme itself is just called "V", you can also consider it the eponymous main character's theme, especially when all those themes of what Night City is are almost embodied by what V was, is, and will be in the game.
I mean, a chip inside your head making a foreign artificial personality take over you is terrifying enough for you to try to fight for your life, dying trying to, plainly abandoning or simply go mad from it. And the idea of fighting, "upgrading", rinse and repeat to survive especially fits this theme well in an outside point of view, since V has become this killing machine(emphasis on machine) just to live on and and stay themself, or at least die without the other person inside them "becoming V".
That idea is explored further(a more personal perspective there imo) with Never Fade Away, one of the songs from Samurai(the in game band, IRL the band Refused made it) also remixed for the ending credits, so I'll suggest listening to both versions of it.

One of the things I feel a lot in this soundtrack is the influence of Paul Leonard Morgan. I first heard his music in Dredd, another masterpiece of the dystopian cyberpunk genre, and he uses a lot of incredibly hard and harsh digital soundscapes in that soundtrack, similar to what we hear in 2077. If you know the work he did on that movie, knowing CDPR brought him in to help produce the music makes it immediately clear that his hand is definitely weighing the scales of this soundtrack, as it were.

That's actually a great reviewing of the soundtrack, because once in a while is someone who understand both music and the game.
I just wanna add a note: in a simple way, this intro is a kind an overture. It introduces, if not the actual music of the game (the themes themselves), at least the register/style of differents theme of the game. You exactly read the beginning, that's Nightcity, the technology... the "bum, bum, bum" is the Tapeworm/Soulkiller/Mikoshi... that's just a vector for the entrance of Johnny: the disptruptive eletric guitar. And yes, it's organic vs inogranic, but also organic trough inorganic.
And, YES, it's impressive that is the same composer of the Witcher.

Isometric Air just hits a certain wavelength that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the world of Cyberpunk maybe it’s false hope or sweet lies or maybe a bitter sweet feeling whatever it is Isometric Air is it

I have felt elated to notice that I agree with your opinion about the things that this brief but very powerful soundtrack transmits. You are not in a natural place, nobody is on your side, people have lost their heads with technology, you always have to be tense and alert... and prepared for anything because anything is possible.

I can't help but comment this on every CP2077 music video I see. I just love how the bom bom bom bom bom bom bom from V's theme is used in the ending music, Rite of Passage I think. Just... ecstatic. It says "sorry V, there won't be an ending you can look forward to".

my favorite song is "outsider no more." it is bleak, and the melody's quiet meandering betrays the reality of the situation. the song plays whenever V is facing something emotionally devastating, or is being traumatized. making an impossible decision. outsider no more. you finally know the truth. juxtaposed is its usage when V becomes part of a community. like the duality of the world V has to navigate, it is hauntingly beautiful, but a reminder of everything it costs.

I feel a little shifty asking, but there's a specific game that I rarely see content of, and it's Remnant: From the Ashes. The main theme of that game is hauntingly beautiful, and I feel like you'd get a kick out of it even if it doesn't wind up in a video. Good game, too.

Little known fact is the CP2077 score is made up of 3 composer's works. Paul Leonard-Morgan, Marcin Przybylowicz and P.T. Adamczyk. Paul Leonard-Morgan also did the "Dredd" film score and that is one of my favorite film scores if you like that industrial orchestral riot in the chaos sound.

I've played and finished this game from the launch. Wasnt that bad on pc at launch but it is indeed much better now. So many small and big features improving the game and many bug fixes. But oh man you cannot hate the music in this game. Whenever I hear the main menu theme I just picture the entire story and world. The journey about survival in the technologically advanced and dangerous city. And the guitar in the main theme, Johnny silverhand.
