Actually, when was training to do firefighting (been volunteer for a bit more than 3 years) the urban fire instructor said "heroes jump to the fire and die on them. Firefighters stay with their team and work together. Dunno about you (the instructees), but i prefer to have scars and burns but live to my 80's than cut my life short just to be a 'hero' ". It doesn't mean that being a hero is stupid. Just that only those that die facing the fire are remembered as heroes.
Don't the teams split up, searching rooms for people while other members of the team try to keep the blaze controlled? I'm not saying they go alone, usually with a buddy, so they can help each other.
