Florence Hodges, 93, of Dothan, Alabama on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show (Sep 27 1989)

  • The best thing about Johnny Carson was his never forgetting his roots. He loved having perfectly ordinary middle Americans frequent his Tonight Show, and treated each of them as reverently as his famous celebrity guests. This particular spot from September 27, 1989 featured a quick-witted 93 year old who volunteered 8 hours per day, 7 days per week at a local hospital. (Perhaps one of her 56 mentioned grandchildren and great grandchildren will find this now long-forgotten Tonight Show appearance here on RUclips.)

Born April 1896 and passed away May 1996. Florence lived a great life. She worked in the hospital from 6 in the morning til 2 in the afternoon most every day. If not she would “miss something”. And she hasn’t lost anything, she is still with it. Now that she has passed on, she is up in Heaven making everyone laugh. Rest In Peace. 🙏🙏

Back when Americans loved their fellow citizens. Johnny invited so many just ordinary citizens on the show and the interviews we're far more heartfelt and enjoyable than any celebrity. This country really needs to get back to what made us so great.

My mom, Sybil Nutt, volunteered with Florence for 7 years. She really enjoyed being with the patients and serving them. She also rode to church with Florence to Ridgecrest Baptist, yes Florence was STILL DRIVING! I am glad my town got recognition from a great lady but recently another young lady here in Dothan got recognition on national television by winning the TOP CHEF competition. Kelly Barnard Clark who has her own restaurant downtown. Dothan is a great place to live!

I remember Miss Florence visiting the waiting room where my wifes family was waiting on the family patriarch who was having open heart surgery..... it was one of those late night days as she mentioned in the video... she made everybody feel so at eased as she crocheted.... when it was time for her to leave, she stood up and then went elbows over tea kettles toward the floor... I happened to be a few chairs down from her and caught her before she hit the floor.... scared the B-Jesus outta me... she just laughed and thanked me for not letting her hit the floor.... definitely one of God's angels !!!

During that time, I volunteered at the SE Alabama Medical Center in Dothan as a chaplain. I got to go and pray and comfort people who were experiencing trauma, heartbreak and emergencies. I wasn’t aware of this beautiful woman until very recently. But now that I am, I could definitely feel here wonderful unique spirit permeating the walls of that hospital.

If we still had such great talkshows I would be watching them. I didn't know Johnny Carson before today, but he seems a kind and friendly person and I like his non-celebrity guests and especially this ladies humor is hilarious! :-)

Rebecca Wilhelmsdottir he was the best. Some of his funniest shows was when his monologue jokes weren’t real funny to the audience

Rebecca he was the BEST at this craft. I feel sorry for the young people who never had the privilege of seeing him during his tenure.

Our older people and generations are from GOD. So very special humans. I’d love to just sit and listen to their life stories. I miss my Grammie and Grampie. So very much!

Today making it to 93 & still working hard is not as much of an event as back in ‘89. Delightful lady.
