Yes, this is indeed interesting that Jackson decided to film the Old Man Willow scene. For anyone not in the know(read the book): between leaving the Shire and reaching Bree, the hobbits take a path through some dark woods where Merry and Pippin are suddenly consumed by a living tree known as Old Man Willow. A strange fellow named Tom Bombadil(not featured in the films at all) comes a long and commands Old Man Willow to release them. The words Treebeard speaks, "you should not be waking! Eat Earth, dig deep, drink water, go to sleep!" were originally Tom Bombadil's.

Ken Upton Yeah, I remember that scene in the book! It'd have been interesting to see Tom bombadil in PJ's adaptation.
Most adaptions of the Lord of the Rings choose to omit Bombadil. Jackson's reason was due to the fact that Bombadil did very little in advancing the plot of Frodo and company getting to Bree and the Ring.
Also, he palyed an important role in the barrow-downs, and... they didn't film that. I wasn't exactly hoping to see that part of the book on camera, though. XD
@John6yt Sam's cousin Hal. aye he was up on the north farthing for the huntin' and he SAW a tree walkin. course there ARE no Elm trees on the North Moors so Cousin' Hal can't have seen one.
Tom Bombadil would've been so great in the movie FOTR. He was always my one of my favorite characters in LOTR, and he actually played a big part in their quest. Such a shame they kept him out of the movie.
The only problem with Bombadil's character is that he does very little in advancing the plot. The Hobbits meet him once and afterwards he plays little to absolutely no importance further on as the books go. Aside from helping them get their barrow blades from the Barrow Downs. Which is the reason why Jackson chose to omit him from the films.
@@death-king1834 And if they wanted to include the Barrow Downs, I’d say Frodo and his friends should be rescued by Gildor then. Tom Bombadil still seems too nonsensical.
shitass Tom Bombadil and the woman were always strange characters. Perhaps they would have clashed with the more serious "war" tone of the trilogy. And then everyone would be asking "why wasn't Tom affected by the Ring?"(though he was only unaffected in his area). I would liked to have seen the Blue Wizard talking to Gandalf though as he saved him from Saruman.
Actually it was Radagast the Brown that helped saved Gandalf from Saruman. At that point in the story the Blue Wizards had seemingly vanished years ago, when they disappeared into the east of Middle-earth.
Ol Tom wouldn’t have translated well to the big screen, so I understand why he wasn’t included. Of all the characters to film the willow man with, i think treebeard works best. He’s as old as Tom and his being Fangorn himself means he has the power to tell that grumpy old willow man to behave himself. Treebeard is one of the first Ents born of Iluvïtar and is often called “oldest and fatherless” by the elves.
The problem with the extended movies is they're too light hearted. Look at 0:28 and tell me that's not light hearted fluff. It ruins what should be a tense and gripping end of the world trilogy. The theatricals keep the urgency and tension and don't meander.
@@DestinyAwaits19 There's plenty of light hearted parts in the books though, quite often the characters will try to make light of a situation and sing or chat. 12 hours of unending tension and oh-my-gosh-the-world's-gonna-end would be so stressful and annoying, I like having a bit of humor every now and then, and it's never at an inappropriate time.
I love this extended edition scene with the Old Man Willow HD, he is my favorite creature in LOTR universe! i love all 3 LOTR movie with extended edtion!
Even in the ROTK , chapter 'The choices of Samwise', Sam needing to rescue Frodo from the Orcs once he realises he is not dead, is paralysed with fear and wishes Tom Bombadil was with him at that moment. "He has no fear, Tom Bombadil is the master", says Goldberry. ❇✴
I was actually reading LOTR at the moment when I reached the Tom Bombadil part, I was so curious about old man willow and river daughter and the reason why I came here
+kartik aalst In the books, I'm pretty sure they explain that the entwives pretty much ran away, and never came back. After a while, people started hearing less and less of them until they were just forgotten completely. I think the place they originally went to after running away is now known as the Brown Lands, where they used to tend their gardens.
yeah i read that in the books too but i thought there would be more than just what is mentioned in the lord of the rings book, oh well mystery is good sometimes
koolkitty8989 I think it was mentioned that they moved through that area, and they caused the trees to become strange, but I don't think they settled down there.
I specifically remember seeing an extended version of Fotr and saw the scene from the book of Old Man Willow consumes not only Merry and Pippin, but Sam and Frodo as well, until a voice from Tom Bombadil releases them. However, Tom was not in the scene of my recollection, and it was in a forest with heavy, sleepy air and gold plants. Did I have a great dream or has anyone else seen what I am hinting at?
That's not the "Old Man Willow", it's just a Huorn (sentient tree) The "Old Man Willow" lives in a forest between Tom Bombadil's house and the Barrow Downs (which was once a part of Cardolan, a Dunedain kinship belonging to the old kingdom of Arnor)
Basically, a divorce. Other than Saruman being a modern day politician after defeat, the only contemporary commentary in the book is a lowkey comparison between happily married Tom and Goldberry, and a divorcee Fangorn living with his memories, and regrets. Just observing. I love the book for what it is, ie heroic romance owing more to Homer than to Hemingway. But a handful of motifs are unmistakably modern, which I find interesting.
Im not sure I feel this scene fits in at this stage of the plot. Did'nt Pippin and Merry point out when they went in how this forest was different from Mirkwood (and the Old Forest.) That the forest was malicious, but rather just very very old, and watchful? (Paraphrasing abit)
Yes they did indeed, which is why Tom isn't here. They realized that he just wouldn't work and he slows down the story and doesn't add to it. He's a character Tolkien threw in for fun, probably an excuse for a bunch of songs which is great and I love it, it gives a lot of personality to the book I feel, but it would just slow down the movies so much, and they don't have as much time to spend lollygagging about and singing like Tolkien did.
So the ent wives lived in a different area which got torched by Sauron. The sad reality is that all the ent wives were probably incinerated when that happened

I remember that from the book and the FotR video game.

A good reason why I prefer the extended editions. Fanservice to Tolkien fans.
in fact the old forest in the shire and Fangorn forest once was the same
I guess this makes sense to move Old Man Willow to Fangorn.
4:23 goosebumps from his reply
So sad.. you can see the pain in his eyes.
It was really sad, his face says it all.
I will probably cry when I watch this film trilogy again when I am like 80 or something...
In the book, Gaffer Gamgee stated that he thought he saw a "tree-man" in the Shire, so there could be Entwives there.
I read online that in one Tolkien's letters concerning the fate of the Entwives, that the Entwives would more then likely perished.
PurpleOwlAnimation indeed, as if there was anywhere the ent wives would be hiding it would be in the shire.
@John6yt Sam's cousin Hal. aye he was up on the north farthing for the huntin' and he SAW a tree walkin. course there ARE no Elm trees on the North Moors so Cousin' Hal can't have seen one.
They likely all died when sauron burned fought his way to eregion to claim the 3 rings from celebrmbor

Patrick Nadro also he is resisted easily the ring like boss when he touched it.
Patrick, should Tom Bombadil be including in the film, who would you choose to play him? I vote for Brian Blessed.

Tom was Tolkiens excuse to jam 20 pages of song into the Fellowship.
But... They are supposed to be saved by Tom Bombadil

I think it works in this context because it shows how wrathful the awakening trees are becoming because of the destruction of Saruman.
@@NickCorbinOfficial i think its simply an call out. i appreciate PJ putting it in the Extended edition to try to make Book fans happy.
@@GreenMan1986x I always thought Tom would fit better in the Hobbit book than in the LOTR
Tom Bombadil is such a badass character in lotr😎
The Old Man Willow was actually in the Old Forest between The Shire and Bree, not Fangorn Forest, and it was actually Tom Bombadil that saved them

@@gianna526 That's why the movies are better than the books. Cutting out all that silly fluff was a smart decision by Jackson.
The Ring having no power over him would probably also cut the tension apart.
