The preamp in the bass he's playing, one of his Overwater Signature instruments, is a J-RETRO 01 DELUXE. The bass on the table is another Phill Mann Overwater Signature which has a J-TONE 01.
I have a cort active only 5 string with bartolini mk1 pickups. Played unplugged the body rings and the string sound is sweet and mellow. I’ve been told by a guitar maker that the quality of the construction and tone wood is first rate. When plugged in I never liked the sound. The preamp it turns out is total rubbish. So I’ve been looking for new preamp that maybe will bring out the full potential of my instrument. I’ve researched a number of brands. On a bass thread it was suggested the best are ‘Noll’ and ‘East’. I don’t have much money due to health reasons so cost is a big deal. Seeing this vid as well seeing the vid on self installation has made the decision easy. A preamp that takes full advantage of my basses marvellous sound while minimising install costs is what I need. I’m super excited. Thank you for developing a high quality professional product that is accessible for ordinary people like me. 🙏
I had a J Retro Peramp on my J Bass but it didn't do me good not because of tone or sound just to tone pot was noise whenever i turn that pot but i gave it away to my friend. I wish I could Have a J-Retro Preamp Back into Mylife
The most helpful review of a John East pre amp on the internet..

Hi Ian, by all means, contact me via email john.east@east-uk.com
You know the preamp is good when the owner of the company has an oscilloscope permanently attached to his desk.

What are the pickups in this bass? Sounds Incredible!
They are OVERWATER pickups which are custom made for them.
