What a beast of a bass player! Great demo, this is how all demos should be like. All he missed was more of a Rock-ish/pick style kind of vibe but understandable.
I got one of these for my Japanese 62-style Jazz bass, it preserves the original pickup sound very well but gives more tone shaping which I need. Really nice product, highly recommend
Saw you, John, at the 2016 London Bass Guitar Show. Thanks for your patient demonstration of the J-Retro. I will definitely be getting one for my Geddy Lee Jazz bass when I have the budget. Dave (winner of the 2016 bassface competition)
Hello Yesterday, i went to Hot Wire Basses Bert Gerecht, he inserted to me J Retro Elektronic in my Squier 5 Strings Jazzbass. Very very good Sound much better than before. You will be inspired.
I own 3 of Your products (U-retro , ,acg and a "sp2 "wood&tronics) ,and love them all .Used on my video demos too (wood &tronics basses and a 5ver retrofitted). I would switch sp2 for U-retro maybe ,for mid semi- parametric control and ultra bright setting i miss (mids for "adapt" on recording stuff, and ultra high which helpswen strings start to "die). Also i think sp2 and U-retro "sound" different somehow ,but cannot "bet" about ,i did'nt try on the same bass.
i own both already in different basses (noticed answer now thanks) . For the pre-shape Built-in of U-retro !! = there is a way (also in private Pm if prefer) , i could recreate it somehow on sp2 internally , or with the help of an external eq ?. So i could figure out how U-retro would sound in my bass that has sp2 . (but i would need to know what to cut/boost). I miss active blend nby the way (passive is not-existent actually ,as a blend )
@JohnEeRetro is too much if my Jazz Bass is active then I will put J-Retro? it will become 18V.. what do you prefer? active pickups of passive pickups + the J-Retro.. Thanks for entertaining my questions :)))
U/j retro NOT filter based. But East realized a filter based / pre for the "acg basses" company . They sell those kind of filters .I have one . Personal view of those = Tricky pony ,great when you have time to settle with controls (i.e HOME and studio) . But Live/stage if you touch the controls on the fly---- you can easily make a MESS ,both to you and the Mixer-SoundGuy unless you know the controls VERY WELL ,as they change the sound quite dramatically with slightly movements.
yeah, but at least I can use the bridge pickup by itself for that jaco tone. I have one more question if you don't mind; how long does the battery last? Is it something you need to change every 6 months or is it something that would happen, say weekly? (I've never owned an active bass)
Before Covid I was playing on a regular basis and the battery last a long time. I’d say easily 4 months. If it does go out just switch to passive. IMO these are the best preamps. You get what you pay for! I hope that helps.
Hello John! I'll be traveling to York (UK) in July / August 2013. How can I buy the J-Retro 01 with you? I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (google translation)
....Best preamps for sure!!! And a real bass player!
Some of the best preamps ever made! Any jazz bass I own will have these. Sounds amazing in my Lakland JO5.

I have one of these... fantastic preamp.
Gorgeous !!!
absolute bass design
Outstanding, SOLD!!
Good to know. Thanks!
Nice Demo...
i like it passive
Thank you for confirming that passive jazz basses sound freaking amazing.
Thank you friend! In late July I contact!
very impressed with reggae sound! Although for other styles of music i'd rather stick with passive, as i think it sits in the mix better.
Good day. Thank you for this awesome and informative video. What pick ups r installed on this bass please.
Nordstrands.
John can you get this preamp in a box. I'm not really into the onboard preamp anymore, however I do like it's transparency.

What pickup are you using here?

Is there an internal gain control for adjusting the active volume to set it to be equivalent to the passive volume?
U can adjust the gain on the active

sweet!!
are the East pre's filter based? If the J-Retro and P-Retro or U-Retro are not filters then does John East make a filter based pre? Thanks
does it allow you to use one pickup at the time or blend the two like on a regular jazz bass?
can you still blend the pickups in passive mode?
Yes you can
price?
What they don't tell you is when the battery dies the bass dies. No way to play in passive mode😢.
i have j retro deluxe, retro rules!!!!!
"Now I'm going to slam the front end with a Darkglass B7K and play doom metal with a pick." Oh - no, wait...
Do it!
