Gulper eels portrayed 20 years ago: "A big mouth so that it may swallow things larger than itself! Truly horrifying." Gulper eels portrayed now: "Lol, balloon."
@@chinchilla641 when you're 6 years old you don't ever take that into account and just have it sitting in the back of your mind whenever you go to the beach.
Bruh if that thing gets close to you your literally getting swallowed in a second, it’s adorable when passive but hostile it will swallow damn near whales
Fascinating. I can recall seeing a drawing of one of these bizarre critters in a children's illustrated science book back in the 1980s. It seriously made no sense to me (though I found the concept of bioluminescence intriguing). I couldn't work out how it caught & swallowed it's prey down in the deep dark waters where it lives. Watching it capture prey with that extraordinarily wide mouth, you can see that it creates a suction that pulls tiny fish into it's mouth & then uses the ingested water to push it's meal into it's stomach. I wonder if it ever uses that ballooning effect to deter predators (much like a puffer fish)?
@@Thumbsupurbum it wouldn't keep it from being swallowed by a predator that kept trying, but, many predators will give up if the prey suddenly appears larger or changes shape. Sometimes if prey changes shape enough, the predator just doesn't know what it's chasing anymore and backs off to be on the safe side :)
Maybe it balloon up to make itself look bigger as defensive mechanism against predator or intimidation. It probably sees the submarine as big predator/enemy/big evil think
Correction, gulper eels are actually not true eels. True eels are in the order anguilliformes (an-GWIL-loh-fohrmz) whilst gulper eels are a bit confusing taxonomically, but I like to believe that they share the same order as true eels, but most people claim that the belong to saccopharyngiforms (sa-coh-fuh-RIN-juh-fohrmz) Despite the debate between these two differences, gulper eels are still not true eels and are in a different group of animals, but I can definitely understand the confusion.
Is the eel being filmed around the bottom of the raft the guys are standing on, or is that a submersible in deeper water? If it is the bottom of the raft, why is this guy hanging around in such shallow water?
@@jemgodspeed small stuff?? No that thing right there can swallow sharks, humans, idk about whales but the only thing that is down there with the gulper eel are squids, Angler fish, and other gulper eels

and here I was afraid of an eel my entire life to find out it was only an over-hyped fish-balloon
:))
I'm still afraid of morray eels. Aggressive creatures.
How often do you find yourself dozens of yards under the sea? I'm just asking since you're scared of it.

Over hyped? The thing can swallow whales😂 and will swallow you if you get close to it, they are dangerous when hostile
Lmao I thought they were scary this whole time but now they're just adorable😭😭😭

Seems like a rather fragile adaptation to use for defense. At least puffer fish have spikes on them.

Maybe a swift
@@Thumbsupurbum I mean to be fair only a couple of pufferfish species have spikes. Most pufferfish are just smooth balls when they puff up
That eel just blew my mind.
It inflates itself, just like a balloon

I never thought I'd see a Gulper eel on video. so glad we have people going down to film these amazing creatures up close.
This video doesn’t actually tell you anything about the Pelican Eel.
seeing how it can do that deep under water without imploding is enough
Because, they hardly have any data on the eel, though, these studies will help.
Why would it implode, Marv? Why don't you implode when you take a breath?
Markle2k you think its the same to be several hundred meters under water breathing versus being on land?
Marv, it's inflated with water, not air. It's filling a plastic bag by stretching it and shaking so that air goes in (or water when under water).
I feel like I just found part of the inspiration for Zamtrios...
I love it.
