  • Here is a video response to one ofnthe most frequent questions I get on one of most popular videos right now.
In my video PTO Clutches 101 • Pto clutch issues 101....
I show some tips amd tricks on how to remove the clutch. In the comments I often get asked "How do I remove the bolt?" or "What if I can't remove the bolt" etc.
While I do use penetrating oil to help remove the clutch from the crank shaft it doesnt really help remove the bolts. There is a bushing that is about 1.5" between the head of the bolt and the threads in the crankshaft so it will be very hard for penetrating oil to ever reach the threads of the bolt and crankshaft.
In most cases more impacting torque is all that is needed. In rare occasions the bolt might break inside the crankshaft.
In that case drill out the bolt starting off small and stepping working your way up tonthe size needed for the tap of the size of the original threads.
If you try bolt extractors use extreme caution not to break off your extractor in the siezed bolt.
    Thanks for watching!

My PTO clutch fell off one day mowing. Bolt completely sheered inside the drive. Tried a easy out tool. Tried drilling the remainder of the bolt out. Doing everything off the ground with about a foot of clearance. So I don't have all the fancy tools and lifts. I resulted to putting a size up from 3/8 to 1/2 inch all thread inside the drive welding it center. Slide the new clutch on, tighten the nut on the bottom. Job complete, or so I thought.. the stop bracket comes flush with the PTO stops. The new clutch seems cheap made although it's almost an exact replica of the OEM. Wish I could show you a video of this. One side of the clutch has what looks to be heavy rivets clasping one side of the clutch with pre measured shim between magnet "top" and clutch bottom. No adjustments can be made on the gap. So once again I modified the bracket to extend another 1.5 inches to keep the clutch from vibrating and jumping over the clutch stop. What a nightmare.

The nightmare is how long it took me to come to the final outcome. After hours drilling and trying to remove the remaining bolt. Welding, plus modifications to the stop was so much easier.

    All good advice
Cant beat an impact hey. I have a heavy duty cordless Makita that has 4 settings so you can go gentle or give it max. I dont use it much but an essential tool if you need to undo a bolt or nut that would otherwise turn the whole thing when using normal wrenches.

What do you think about that z830A. I might be getting one for free it hasn't run for a year though.

I dont recall ever working on a Z830A. But hey free is always good. If its been sitting awhile you're probably going to need to replace the carb, clean out the old gas from the fuel tank, and blow the fuel lines out to get it started. Plus a new fresh battery. Hopefully nothing major is wrong with it.

My bolt broke off recessed in the crankcase. Attempted to use a reverse bit and then the reverse bit broke off inside the already broken bolt. It's been a nightmare

Yeah that's always a nightmare when it happens. Here are two videos that might help out.
