Sebastian Lanser is one of my favorite drummers. A beast of a Drummer!!! Seen him live a few times. He also used to play in Panzerballett, one of my favorite bands. Looking forward to his new project with Rafael Trujillo
One of the things you didn't comment on which really makes him stand out to me is that when he does those "gallop" or burst patterns with his feet (e.g. 3:26), he's going foot to foot. Most drummers would just go RLR RLR RLR RLR, but this guy is one of those that goes RLR LRL RLR LRL, which is just such a marker of a truly spectacular death metal drummer to me. Mario Duplantier of Gojira is another one that does this, most notably on the songs The Art Of Dying, and Pray.
I really think you have to train that way. Ambidextrous, right. But the simpler way to think of it is that you obviously can’t have one side stronger than the other without having very noticeable limitations.
@@briankennedy1313 Yeah absolutely, but I think it's becoming more of a thing these days, especially amongst Tech and Prog metal drummers. Let's be real, every genre not using a double pedal can get away with having at least the left leg being a "weak limb", in the modern metal subgenres there is nowhere to hide. Even with hands, I don't see many other genres doing as much switching of the lead hand across the kit as modern metal drummers do currently.
never thought that is very impressive or odd.... i do gallops the "other" way just it always seemed way more efficient to me and therefore way more natural. if you constantly do RLR, you put way too much emphasis on your right foot, overworking it. And especially if you play long shows, you search for every point of stress relief on overworked limbs you can get Also, i would be surprised if for most people developing a solid RLR LRL pattern takes significantly longer than getting the RLR at the same speed down. I think it's pretty equal in terms of difficulty and time to learn it
@@hazardeur you are definitely the exception here. RLR RLR RLR (as 16ths in simple time) means your right just does constant 8ths, and the left fills in the gaps. I think this is probably "Route 1" for most people, especially playing it on hands, because then your "strong side" gets to lead all the way through. I totally agree though going RLR LRL is definitely more efficient, and better in the long run, and it's probably how we should all learn to do it from the beginning.
The secret about Sebastian looking so chill is the crazy kind of stuff he used to play in Panzerballet. Yes it's frigging Obscura but he already solved a mountain of odd timing problems and insane fills in his old jazz-prog-metal fusion band. So yes check out Panzerballet it's sax-y.
Sebastian Lancer one of my favorite drummers. Thanks for the video, and greetings from Russia! Andrew, very interested your opinion about Jamie Saint Merat - Ulcerate drummer.
Lovely to see you are reacting to one of my favs drummers all time. The new album they are recording is going to be nuts. I suggest you react to The Zenith Passage-Deus Deceptor- now that you are into some of the best extreme metal drummers
Got two for ya 66Samus - "Hear me" playthrough from Devin Townsend (Sam was the studio drummer for this song actually) Dream Theater - "Pale Blue Dot" drum cam or Live from London version (Mike Mangini's drum cam version is good but you can't really hear the other instruments very well, London version is an official recording but much fewer shots of Mike playing)
Just want to say you have the best drum reaction chanel on youtube , I love how you just watch and comment when appropriate. Good job man 👍👍👍👍 just got a sub from me
This guy does what dave wreckel did to me when i was a kid. They are that good it makes you think how do i ever get to that level. It definitely makes a difference having a decent kit with everything on it to start with and you work those areas together instead of adding over the years. I found that anyway
Sebastian Lanser is by far my favorite drummer and Rudinger 2nd. Listen to 'Iconic' on his channel. Awesome song-writing as well as vocals, if you listen to the full song.
Sebastian is amazing! I have been through most of your videos and I have not seen any coverage of David Diepold. He plays with amazing economy of movement and precision. Please have a watch to a video from him covering the song Existential battle.
Obscura's songwriting is brilliant. How about some Vital Remains? This is an incredibly good recording: Eugene Ryabchenko - Vital Remains - Icons of Evil (cover)

The guy is exquisite: control, variety, creativity, touch/feel... the nuances to his playing and all the odd time signatures yet he flows like a beautiful river and navigates the song so beautifully that he plays the right stuff to accompany the music but also enhance it. One of the best. I just wanted to say that he has played in an amazing Jazz/Fusion band - ruclips.net/channel/UCLRkiz8mR90hxPjsnXdMvGA - and the latest release was some of the best drumming I've heard for a while. And then I forgot that he did the drumming, not a suprise. Obscura are amazing. Thanks for highlighting this guy as he's up there and breaks free of genre's but still manages to play in 'extreme' settings. Thanks again. :)
Then you have their new drummer David Diepold! Such a beast!!! Still need Seven from Necrophagist though, the band which spawned Obscura and really jump started the tech death genre beyond Death. Still need Death - Scavenger of Human Sorrow with Richard Christy!
I'm gonna make the left-field suggestion; check out (for your own amusement) a cover of the "Flim" by the electronic artist Aphex Twin. There's some amazing versions on RUclips and hearing something meant only for computers to play done on a drum kit is unbelievable.
I'd say this is one of Sebatians/Obscura's less aggressive songs, which is cool in some respects in that it showcases other aspects of his playing. At the same time, it was less impressive (which is a ridiculous statement because of how complex this song is to perform this pristine), compared to virtually any other Lanser/Obscura play through. Andrew seemed less blown away compared to other reactions, which I put down to the song choice. Also, Sebatians work with Panzer Ballet is whoa!
I wanna ask you a question and if you want you can answer. When you watch drummers playing at this level of difficulty what are you thinkin??Oh what he is doing these things is unplayable or Ok he is good but i can play too like this easily??? I think all is what are you wanna do if you know the way how to do it so is a matter of exercising and what do you want! Deploy your thinkin about!

Can we please take a moment to acknowledge Linus Klausenitzer absolutely making love to that bass?? The tone on that fretless is down right beautiful.
It’s almost all I can hear.
Man, every time I try to concentrate on the drums when listening to Obscura I get carried away by these gorgeous bass lines of Linus Klausenitzer....
His switching the lead foot in some of the patterns is sick... an amazing drummer.
