Actually soy sauce chicken rice is not the usual hainanese chicken rice. It is more of a Hong Kong style soy sauce chicken with plain rice and gravy. This is however a healthier form of "Chicken Rice" that taste good in its own way.
Hi Ghib, unlike Singapore's steamed or roasted chicken rice, Hong Kong's soya sauce chicken rice recipe is normally served on white rice with some sauce poured on top. By the way, I appreciate your honest opinion. We watched 3 of your videos this morning. Keep up the good work. We are going to miss your insights into Singapore when all this restrictions is lifted & you finally manage to fly home.
Sorry no offence , as a Singaporean, I have to comment that the soy sauce chicken rice served is definitely %100 sub-standard, it looks dry without any sauce, skin which can add flavor is missing and it just look unappetizing, most Singaporean will surely never return to such store if such dish is served. Thanks for encouraging people to return the used tray as most of the cleaners are elderly folks and we surely can give them a hand. And most of the hawkers selling food can be quite brash and unsmiling as they work very long hours with laborious chores, hope everyone can understand their situation. Thanks 😊
@ paecpc Indeed, that plate of soy sauce chicken just looks mediocre. He’s given breast meat which tends to be a tad dry. Honestly speaking, all these Michelin rated stalls are over-rated. My mom can make much better soy sauce chicken at home and she’s a Cantonese too. The golden caramel soy sauce gravy is the soul of this dish. Most Hawkers here can’t do a decent one now. Likewise, the claypot rice. The aroma of rice cooked over charcoal is non-existent. The chicken pieces need to be marinated in a good wine sauce and throwing in a few chunks of premium quality salted fish and Chinese sausage make all the difference in this dish.Try eating soy sauce chicken and claypot rice in Malaysia and Hong Kong. These dishes taste much better there.
I do not mind about sub standard sauce. In Australia, $S2.8 can buy only peanuts. No chicken and rice. Singapore food courts are quite affordable and unique. Elderly have to work long hours with very little pay. They have no energy left for smiling.
Joseph Lee ....Only $2.80? For certain foods, I wouldn’t eat them even when they’re free. At our age we don’t eat much and what we put into our body systems really matters since we may not handle the food well after eating, so the quality, seasonings and the way the food is cooked matter. That’s why I rather cook most of my meals. In other countries, $2.80 can buy much better fare. In countries like Japan, food products and merchandise may be a tad more expensive than ours but their quality is way above what we get here in Singapore. So bottom line, we don’t get value for money goods anymore in SG.
As a Singaporean, i hv not tried out chinatown hawker delicacies before .. having a foreigner to intro local food to local people is rare.. Thanks for sharing n enjoy your stay in tropical hot SG! Hot weather can let us burn more calories too.
The vid makes me miss the food at Chinatown complex! You can also try good food at ABC market at Bukit Merah - there's a store called 瑞记 selling great wanton soup (10 pieces for just $3) and they are not just any ordinary wantons! Their wanton skins are so chewy and delicious and along with the meat it tastes so heavenly compared to all other wantons out there. It is also super cheap to get them at 10 for $3. There is also a famous claypot rice at ABC market that sells one of the best claypots I have tasted so far in Singapore.
Those dishes look really mouth watering. And you beginning to sound like a Singaporean. And a real foodie with these great food adventures. Great to see you enjoying all the the city can offer as a food heaven ..............
Ghib-san!! Thanks for your recommendation on Claypot rice! (I had to wait for 1.5h at night) I tried and it was really amazing! (I am a Singaporean, but I don’t know all these good food. Hahaha)
Just a correction on the popiah 's ingredient; it is not radish(daikon) but jicama that is used. Jicama can be eaten (and slightly sweeter and crunchier) but daikon rarely is eaten raw. Daikon is used for the 'carrot cake' in SG.
lol the title reminds me of Mikey Chen (Strictly Dumplings) It seems you also ate as much as him 😂 (also, soy sauce chicken rice is different from hainanese chicken rice. The rice might not be using the fragrant chicken rice. I wish they give more soy sauce to the plain rice though)
@@TheLostOjisan I think you are good addition to the list of food reviewers on youtube. Quite honest and you genuinely seem to be able to appreciate our local cuisine
For soy sauce chicken you can try Chiew Kee along Cross Street which is just next to Chinatown mrt station. It's not cheap but certainly waaaay better than what you queued for here. Get it with either rice or noodles, and the dumpling soup. There are two shops of the same name (split from the same family) but I personally prefer the one on the left.
Hawker chan is famous for it's soya sauce chicken which is the on you ordered. The rice is white steamed rice, not chicken rice. It is still very delicious. Soft, tender chicken with the very delectable sauce.
The dark soy sauce is only a must have for the white chicken of the chicken rice (personal opinion though). I would say that is too much dark soy sauce added to your claypot rice.
Wanted to watch the full video..but i just can't!! Everytime Ghib is eating, and me realizing I can't get out to grab a bit makes me hangry hahaha Sorry Ojisan, maybe after tye circuit breaker ill rewatch your vids in full!

This is the HK Cantonese Styled Roasted or Dark Sauce Chicken /Duck/Char Siu It ate with Plain Rice and not the flavoured Chicken Rice Chicken Rice is Hainaness Style
Exactly! The chicken , skin on, and the sauce are the main attraction, the rice is mere supporting cast , has to be plain n not compete with the chicken drizzled with the soya sauce
Eat the ikan bilis Yang Tofu dried meehoon at yellow colour section. Eat 九記, intestine congee, raw fish slides and noodle. Not far from the Claypot rice there are a stall selling only fried hor fun. Limited plates per day. Near that stall , there are two snack stalls, one selling mini fried sweet potato balls and another sells fried crispy honey sweet rice in cube form. Check it out. By the way, the fried honey crispy rice stall owner taught me how to stop ants, I noticed there were no ants coming to his stall, so I asked him, why no ants. He said use red coloured rubber bents. Throw a few around the possible ants track, and tie your plastic of sweet stuff with it. It works.
For the Xiao Long Pao ( 小笼包),it’s recommended to eat slowly so that you won’t burn your tongue as it can be pretty hot. Amaze that you can put the whole piece into your mouth 😄. Perhaps, you can also visit the Hawker Centre near People’s Park Complex ( 珍珠坊), near China town MRT exit. There are plenty of mainland China food there - the most famous should be 日日红麻辣香锅。Pretty spicy but yummy, always Long queue. You can order the 小 or 中辣(little or medium spicy )
