You should go try Sungei Road Laksa. That's a dark horse for one of the simplest and yet, best. It has the most old school taste and feel. 27 Jln Berseh, #01-100, Singapore 200027
@@TheLostOjisan Locals actually more or less agree that Sungei Road Laksa is better, 328 is more famous because it won the Gordan Ramsay challenge. 328 was really good like 20 years ago, they didn't cut on the ingredients. After the challenge they kinda reduced the ingredients but increased the price. The soup is also not as flavorful as it used to be.
I beg to differ. Sungei Rd Laksa is HORRID. It is watery and flavourless. I went to check it out because of all the online recommendations and was totally disappointed.
You should try the Ondeh Ondeh at Kim Choo... I swear it is the best in SIngapore, with bits of gula melaka bursting out of the coconut-coated mochi! My favourite Kim Choo dumpling is not the nyonya one which you ate but the hokkien one with salted egg. Try that next time!
bak chang (rice dumplings) have different types the one you had that is sweet is the nyonya type. there is the original one which is a little salty . then there is bean filled and a empty (no fillings) which mostly pple like to dip it in sugar. the stall you went to is a famous stall. a little pricey thgh.
You should try the laksa at queensway shopping centre, the best laksa i've had in my opinion. There is another 328 laksa outlet in the same mall, but the laksa stall adjacent to that is definitely better.
Glad to see you try the laksa in Katong. Its pretty hard to taste the seafood for Singapore Laksa, the malaysian Asam laksa which is sour and not coconut based would be a better seafood aroma dish i reckon. Yes, jangut is delicious as they use fresh coconut husk and milk. Doesn't taste fishy but my favourite laksa in Singapore. Plus their chili is lovely to mix in
Theres a reason why laksa stalls dun provide chopsticks.. so that the vermicelli can be eaten together with the broth when using just the spoon.. that's also why the vermicelli is cut into small pcs..
The dumpling (or bak chang) you tried is nonya dumpling which is sweet. There are many types of dumplings. Japanese may like the red beans dumpling which is also sweet. Most people like the Hokkian meat dumplings which is savory (salty flavour).
You can try another Laska stall inside Roxy Square aircon foodcourt right across the road...the Malay Stall’s Nasi Padang is highly recommended too..cheap and good
FYI, traditionally, laksa were just eaten with just spoons in the olden days. This shop got maintained that tradition by cutting the noodles to shorter pieces.
Not bakkutteh. Is chilli crab. There is one inside queensway shopping centre opposite ikea. It is also one of the original laksa along katong. Luohan is monk fruit in english. Nowadays frequently used for keto food as a sugar substitute.
You can tell it's a good laksa when the diner almost finish the soup before the noodles, it's all about the soup. Btw i saw your pasir ris vlog in your main channel. I will like to recommend 2 food dishes (Chicken rice and handmade noodles) located in a small coffee shop around the HDB area. They close by 3pm to 4pm so you have to get there earlier if you want to try it. When you order chicken rice, remember to self-serve your soup and for handmade noodles, order U-main. The noodle is famous for its soup and ingredients. The address is: 440 Pasir Ris Drive 4, #01-13, Singapore 510440
Say hello to James. I like it very much when you have James in the videos. He adds another angle to the S’pore experience....your observations can be considered as conversation pieces😊
It was real power packed laksa 20 years ago, now the price has gone up so much and the laksa soup no longer so authentic anymore, they cut back on dried shrimp which flavoured the soup distinctively and so little laksa leaves. It's banging on the tourists' dollars...sad news for our local food fare.
I believe the reason why the laksa thick beehoon are cut into shorter pieces, this is so that eaters will use spoon to scope and eat. When you scope, you will get the gravy soup too, and thats where you get the complete taste of it. By the way, that shellfish inside laksa is cockles. It has a bloody taste, which really isn't something everyone may like. Kim Choo. They are one of the oldest and popular brand selling nonya bak chang and kueh. Peranakan is the ethnic group which the early Chinese from China traveled and settled down in areas like Melaka, Penang, Singapore, and marrying the natives. Nonya means the Peranakan women, Baba is the Peranakan men. Bak chang can be explained as rice dumpling, which is link to the Duanwu Festival (some called it Dragonboat Festival). That is history related to it, but long story.... 😛
you are wrong... the reason why spoon is used , because its illegal laksa push cart stores many many years back , people will squat and eat at the streets , to facilitate easy escape for the hawker , customer will eat faster , lol
@@sdqsdq6274 That is true. But the main reason is, these street hawkers dont bring tables around with them, and some of them don't even use carts, but carry their limited stuff using sticks on shoulder. So the customers have to carry the bowl in one hand to eat, and they can't use both chopsticks and spoon. Spoon is better since they can use it both to eat the noodles and drink soup. That's why the vendors cut up the noodles for them. My father used to sell noodles on the street when he was young, and he explained it to me in the past :)
You should try Janggut Laksa. It is run by the daughter of the original owner who set up shop in the 1950s along East Coast Road. Junggut means beard in malay and this guy had hair that grew out of a mole on his chin. He was the one who popularize katong laksa. Currently their main outlet is at Queensway Shopping Centre where his daughter is overseeing but they have an outlet at Roxy Square which is opposite that 328 Laksa where you went. 328 Laksa opened much later probably around 1970s as a competitor to Janggut Laksa and went on to open branches very near them.
328 Katong Laksa has only earned it's popularity in Google : BUT YET earned it's cutlery respect from his strong competitors in other parts of Singapore .
Nice bro. peranakan food is one of the best spicy dishes around. Recommend you to try out peranakan food dishes as their food taste best with white rice. You can google the blue ginger restaurant near tanjong pagar mrt if you want to find quality peranakan food. In the menu you have to try out buah keluak, something you will never try before in japan.. contact the restaurant to ask if buah keluak (black nut) is avaliable because it is under limit quantity. Ah I did not know that. I will try it next time for sure!
Yes, jangut is delicious as they use fresh coconut husk and milk. Doesn't taste fishy but my favourite laksa in Singapore. Plus their chili is lovely to mix in
That is my favourite laska too and these pork triangle dumplings.

The laksa at Yishun central which Ghib mentioned has long long long queues at all times lol

janggut laksa at Queensway Shopping Centre is the best for me. Can get their curry chicken there too.
I like Cathay Laksa in JB cos they add small fried fishballs which soaks the laksa broth... wish Katong Laksa had this fishball in their laksa
