    When i practiced, the penalty system was more complicated with shido, shui, keikoku and hansoku make. They respectively gave the opponent koka, yuko, waza-ari and ippon.

    • @StoissMartialArts
      @StoissMartialArts Год назад +2

      The new system is so much better for everyone IMO. It's hard to teach new people all the differences and the same for the referees whenever they made changes to the system or was teaching new referees.
      And the way they did it was very simple. Is it keikoku then it's a hansoku make in almost all the example except a few, and the rest was automatically Shido. Removing koka was also a good thing since all of the minor scores would cause a lot of discussions if it should have been a no score instead and especially when it comes to the whole discussion about impartial referees where it would be easy to argue if a score was okay since it was a minor one, when it was actually the judge having favoritism. But most importantly it taught the Judokas that only good technique would be rewarded instead of just focusing on koka scores and kinsa for hantai.

    For people who are complaining about the "no leg touch" rule, i wanna point out that Greco-Roman wrestling also prohibits grabbing the legs. So, do you think that makes the G-R form worse and more watered-down than the freestyle form?
    Thats a legit question btw. I dont have much grappling experience so I'm curious what people think about it.

    • @adammills9715
      @adammills9715 5 лет назад +1

      I think it depends on the underlying context. Ive heard some people say that the lack of leg grabbing is unrealistic but in what context? the sport of Olympic judo is pretty far removed from any kind of self protection wheather that was the original intention or not so that's not likely it. The same exact critique could be applied to greco and as you imply, you don't hear people complaining about that. A sport is a sport, no one argues for a weapon defence segment of Olympic judo or a match in which you're scored on giving statements to the police.
      If I were to guess I'd say that people are just comparing modern Judo to the judo they used to do and seeing it as less holistic, less fun and more contrived. When two people grapple leg grabs become inevitable. In the case of greco roman I would assume there's no complaints about leg grabbing because the rules been around for much much longer. So yeah, I'd say if I looked at it objectively, greco is more "watered down" than freestyle or catch it's just that everyones used to it?

    I was on the mats in the 60's since age 9, trained with the very best in the world for well over 33 years. Was a 5th dan Judo, 6th dan Jujitsu by the time I was 34. 70's and 80's rules were IMHO fantastic. But there was disease and corrupt politics within the sport, and I quit Judo entirely and closed my club because of the stupid rule changes the IJF imposed to Judo, literally STEALING a huge chunk of SAFE techniques in the lexicon of Judo. The problem was not the techniques... it was IDIOTS teaching BAD technique pretending they knew how to coach when they didn't, IDIOTS pretending they knew how to officiate when they didn't, and in the process GREAT judoka were seriously hurt - THIS is what IJF SHOULD have addressed, instead: They chose the lazy mans path!

      @@saxoman1995 I have that question too

    • @StoissMartialArts
      @StoissMartialArts Год назад

      5th Dan at 34 is very impressive and is almost impossible now unless you're a consecutive world and Olympic champion unless corruption is part of it.
      I lot of the changes made was also to comply with IOC who was about to cut the sport out of the Olympics as they did with Wrestling and other sports, but we also wanted a more upright Judo style instead of the Sambo style of Judo that was influencing the sport in the 90's and 00's making it a very different kind of Judo from the one you knew in the 70's and 80's
      There is a lot to unpack and a ton of opinions on the matter. But if you read some of the teachings of Jigoro Kano you would know that we always have to adapt to our surroundings and learn to overcome challenges instead of crying about it. Crying never helped nobody and the people who stand tall and work with what they got and never gave up were also the ones who came out on top.
      Most of the people who threatened to leave the sport and go over to Free Judo or Kosen Judo are still around today, so it couldn't have been that bad. But the ones having a harder time adapting and making their one-dimensional Judo style more dynamic were the ones we lost in the process still popping up in comment threads telling us how everything was better back in the day. I've been doing Judo for 25 years and have seen tons of changes, and so have people that did it for 25 years before I started.
      And that is actually the wonderful thing about Judo... It actually changes with time to stay as modern as possible because that is how Kano wanted it, and that is how we generally want it. Is it always executed perfectly? Absolutely not! But doing nothing is also a mistake. You might remember how Kani Basani was outlawed in many places due to the high amount of injuries in the 60's and 70's with Kodokan refusing to ban the technique... Then came a famous all Japan incident with Yamashita, and the rest is history.
      We all have to adapt and we all make mistakes, but forcing the more upright Judo by removing leg grabs does not seem to be a huge one in my mind... And I'm a leg grabbing Judoka ;) I did Lats, Ko uchi makekomi, te guruma, sukui nage and morote gari. Now I do Ippon seoi nage, yuko tomoe nage and harai goshi instead... Adapt - Learn - Overcome

    What're the rules for leg grabs / illegal grips?

    • @StoissMartialArts
      @StoissMartialArts Год назад

      If you grab the leg or defend with a hand on the leg, you get a shido, if you do it again you get hansoku make. Normally it would be 3 shidos = hansoku make but for the leg touch they made it strict.
      The illegal grip is basically anything other than standard kumi kata will earn you a shido if you don't attack at once. Even taking a same side or back grip for more a couple of seconds without initiating an attack is a shido offence. It's to avoid people locking down or stalling the fight with alternative grips, so keeping people at kumi kata, makes the fight more open for both parties with tons of variation.

      If you read Jigoro Kanos teaching you would know that this is what he would have wanted for the sport. This was meant to be a continually developing sport and not just a rigid Martial Art. The point of Judo was to create a completion system and if you think about how Judo changed in the 80's 90's 00's and so on, we can with absolute assurance say that it's very different from what he saw in his last days in the 1930's and that is a good thing.
      People seem to forget why the rules have changed in the first place, and what has actually been achieved with it. We adapt, we learn, and we overcome ;)

    Only Ippon philosophy was way better than 2 wazari=Ippon. Actually I was hopping changes about grabbing legs even make leg locks legal (know it's slmost impossible). The last score system was perfect, actively looking for Ippon (who dares wins). This is a hughe step backwards.

      This is super interesting. In BJJ, people stall for long time to protect their points to win. Now many americans are pushing for a submission only tournament where you can only win by submission. Doesn't matter if you lose position repeatedly, as long as you choke or lock and tap them out, you win.
      No idea Judo is going backwards. Is there any major tournaments that do old judo ruleset?
      BJJ's tournaments are held all over the world and rule set may differ. IBJJF is the equivalent of IJF in Judo. Some people do not like the ruleset.
      Would love to learn judo one day.

    • @lq_12
      @lq_12 6 лет назад +2

      Ben Peng Hello and thanks for your answer.
      I really think IJF is going backwards. I mean we even aren't allow to make all gokyo techniques "Kata Goruma" for example.
      I don't know the vast majority of BJJ but for me the fight that exemplifies the true nature of the art is the one wich took place between Eddie Bravo and Royler Gracie. Only win by submission sounds great due to the fact BJJ is worldwide known for it's ground work but as I told you I don't know the rules so I can not give a deeper opinion than this.
      Both BJJ and Judo were meant as fighting/selfe defense system so restricting competitors, bann techniques or aim for points as I see it, is senseless.
      I'm not american, I'm mexican :3 and for americans satndards it's a small city where I live and we only have at the best only 2 small Judo "academies" and train under IJF regulations so I'm afraid I can't answer you. América is bigger and there is a lot of population perhaps you have old school turnaments ;)
      Want and need to learn BJJ as soon as possible. Sambo looks amazing (not many schools in the whole country).
      I really hope one day IJF could see they are damaging the art. Would be incredible to witness in Olympics a more true Judo's roots aproach "Either win by Ippon or lose by Ippon" and I'm looking forward to see our BJJ brothers competing at the Olympics.

    • @FilipCordas
      @FilipCordas 6 лет назад +1

      Judo was not meant to be a fighting/self defense system. It was actually meant to be a replacement for PE in school. And BJJ was meant to be used for one on one Vale tudo. Main problem with submission only is that most fights end in a draw and last way too long, and that is hard to sell to someone new that doesn't understand what is going on. Also leg locks are not impossible you can make a case that they are the primary weapon in modern BJJ, look up John Danaher death squad and see how ineffective they are.

    • @lq_12
      @lq_12 6 лет назад

      Filip Cordas hi and thanks for your opinión.
      Judo aimed to teach how to subdue without injuring the opponent and BJJ as far as I know was modified from Judo (called Kano's Jiu Jitsu by the time) by Helio Gracie. Helio (a frail man but courageuos) created his own variation due to the fact he thought much of JJ techniques were meant to the stronger. He leater showed all over Brazil Gracie Jiu Jitsu effectiveness by fighting.
      Sadly in Judo we the judokas during Tachi Waza aren't allow to grab the legs (double take down, single take down, Kata Goruma) if we do that it's a Shido.Leg locks and sicssor take down are still forbidden that's why I've been dreaming about IJF changing that.
      Really know for nonpractitioners of any grappling art, submission tournaments should be boring but I do understand the feeling of BJJ practitioners about how can you be the best at BJJ if you are not capable of sumbmiting your adversary, same goes in Judo about Ippon.

    • @FilipCordas
      @FilipCordas 6 лет назад +1

      No actually the real history of Judo is much more interesting than people think. It has a lot to do with Meiji Restoration, Kano was the director of primary education for the Ministry of Education from 1898 to 1901. Judo was an attempt to westernize traditional Jiu Jitsu and make it safe to teach in the new western style primary schools, that started to be introduced at that period, and that where the not injuring the opponent comes from so kids learn not to injure each other and show respect to there opponents . The second function was to be an Olympic style sport that where gaining popularity in the west, that is not to say Kanu actually wanted it to be part of the Olympic games but was inspired by the philosophy. Lots of people don't know that the belt sistem is not all that traditional and was not invented by Kano he just took a similar sistem used by different athletic departments at the time. Self defense was the goal of Judo but not in the way we think of it, it was more trying to become a good citizen and do what you need for you nation in that early 1900 way. And BJJ was a bunch of Brazilians fighting each other one on one, and since judo is a good way of fighting they used a lot of techniques from judo and adapted them for one on one fighting.

    judo should not be based in sportsmanship, it should be practiced as a defense from deadly attacks. if by making judo a sport, it becomes impotent and loses the true spirit, for example, not touching the leg when throwing your attacker? it is like a watered down play activities for the kids... i would even go far as to say that judo should not even be taught as a sport. , but consider judo as a defensive martial art,. then it is one of the best that can save your life in a life or death situation.

    Doing Judo since im 6 (now 22) and maybe it is because i never really learned leg grabs but personally i like it, that they banned leg grabs. For me it doesnt feel like Judo if you grab the legs and counter like 70% of all Judo throws, just because you need the grip behind the neck or the back. Now i feel free to use more grips, techniques and fighting styles and i love it more. Now i like to fight these old geezers who cant do anything against my style because they want to grab my legs all the time because they want to take the easy route.
