  • Fluorescent Light Troubleshoot & Repair The lights would flicker and sometimes not come on at all. Changed out the bulbs and no change they still flicker and not come on at all. Suspect bad ballast or starter. New light fixture was half the price of a new ballast. Replaced entire light fixture.

Right! It's cool that many guys are simply replacing their bad ballast (for $35 - $65) however, an entire new light is $20. Therefore, why bother? I'm glad you made this video to show everyone.

Thanks for the info! You just saved me from having to pay someone to tell me I need a new dohicky and a new whatchamehcallit when I could just buy the whole shooting match and cut out the middle scammer. Thanks for the heads up on the bulbs too!

Gotta get your technical terms right if you want respect among the tradesmen: It's "doohickey" and "whatchamacallit."
Also, cheaper in the short run and the long run to replace with LEDs.

Well he did say he changed out both light bulbs for new ones, and that the problem persisted, so he identified the problem as a faulty ballast. I don’t understand why so many people in the comments said he didn’t “troubleshoot” the situation.
The ballast was bad, and he simply decided to buy a new fixture because it was cheaper. Simple.

Cheaper in the short run AND way cheaper in the long run to replace with LEDs. No need to still be using fluorescents full of mercury.

@@billeaglerunner6844 Well to be fair, the bulbs were replaced. That was step one. Step two was looking for the starter that did not exist. Step three was look up the "ballast".
Step four was "go to the store and buy the significantly less expensive completely new unit".
I Challenge *ANYONE* to do better given the resources.

if the ballast is bad you have replace the entire light. Its cheaper and easier.

Did you even watch the video? He did trouble shoot the problem. He changed the bulbs, there was no starter so the only other option left is a bad ballast. He bought a new light because it was less expensive than a new ballast.

I bought a generic ballast for $5 at hd or...you can buy a random Lot of 5, for less than $20 on eBay from a bulk seller on there. Or...you can get the whole “decorative” set up at the restore.

When replacing the entire light, why not go LED like #1 did? tubes you are using have mercury and are a pain to dispose of.

As to the complaints, that this was not a repair. I changed the bulbs, trouble shot the ballast, electrically, and it appeared to be good. No continuity between the white and any other wire. Seems like there could be a problem with the ballast, even with no continuity, like a permanent open circuit? In any case, it appears the smart move, is what this gentleman did, get a new fixture. I would not criticize him, seeing as I am going to follow his suggestion and start fresh. I have wasted a lot of time with fluorescent fixtures in the past. Seems like they could have been made better.

Those were pre- uncle Joe prices. Now, it cost $11 in gas to fetch the new shop lamp. March 2022 as it jumped just over $4 in Nebraska.
14 cents tax to the state, 64 cents to Joe’s man diapers. 197 workers fired off the Keystone pipeline making an average of $109k per year, priceless!
