@@g-r-a-e-m-e- you are correct, the telescope is not rotating...BUT...the Earth and sky are. This is known as filed rotation, as the sky rotates it creates a this pattern. It is inherent in an alt-az mount. You can see this happening if you watch Orion over a whole night. When Orion rises, he is lying on the side, as the night progresses the constellation becomes vertical and then continues rotating until he is lying down again when the constellation sets. An equatorial mount will not have this because on EQ mount is aligned to the pole and thus the whole mount is moving in the opposite direction as the Earth which cancels out the field rotation.

Also, has anyone investigated if the images appearing on the phone are actually real images through the lens of the S50 or is it being sent from a database through the phone as a hot spot. I find the results far too good to be through such a small unit.
These smart telescopes are technologically impressive but, as a lifelong amateur astronomer, I have no use for them. If I want to look at impressive astro images on a screen, they are readily available, usually at no cost, at a variety of internet sites. Looking at the sky with mirrors and lenses is a different, visceral experience and the folks who join me to take a peek when I set up my scope agree with me.
There are many of us that do have a use for them, especially those of us with kids that don't have the patience to wait for Dad to collimate, set up and get things in place for a potential blob whilst standing in the freezing cold. There's a time and a place for doing things properly and there's a market for products where it's one-click and done. Doing things manually is ritualistic, almost meditative, and for many this may lead to a gateway to that. The results can certainly be improved on and of course for anything planetary I'd recommend doing it the way it's been done for decades. Horses for courses and all that.
A real refractor telescope with just 60x mag gives a perfectly adequate view of Saturn and its rings. And you are looking at the real light with your own eyes , not the light given off by a back-lit LCD display. This is just a gimmic.
For planets it is not suitable. For everything else it is, so not a gimmick. I have an 8”SCT and am a decent astro imager and i’m impressed what can be obtained here…
@@MrSummitville true but with a lot more setting up. However my thinking here was more to do with visual using 8”SCT (where galaxies are faint fuzzies) vs what can be secured through SEESTAR with a quick set up and the “lucky imaging”…
Scott, its nothing to do with transfer rate between devices why you only get say 44 mins of integration after 60 mins of image time. It will be smart stacking and removing poor frames. Ten sec subs on alt-az mounts will produce a percentage of failures. Its doing exactly what its supposed to do. Great video by the way.
@@ScottCastrophotography it’s a great feature as you wont need to sift through hundreds of fits files removing poor frames. Its done for you. My Vespera the other night was imaging Bubble Nebula over 2.5 hours and I got 75 mins integration time. In fact it didn’t collect any frames for 30 mins at one stage yet it carried on. The sky kept clouding over and that was the reason it skipped so many frames. This is great as all the work is done for you with smart stacking. The images you are getting on this test are very impressive. I’m looking forward to receiving mine.
Nice review by Scott this morning, I speculate the reason the data you got per 1hr is a result of a)dithering b)frame rejection…. So under perfect conditions 45 min of data per hour is probably going to be normal…. On harder targets I suppose 30 minutes per hr may happen frequently. Some may think that’s a bad thing… but the goal is to get the most noise free image you can so the extra time it takes is a good thing…. I use dither mode on my other robot for that reason. The 2nd thing I noted is the eaa folks might be a little disappointed that the image is pretty dim without post work…. This is something zwo can improve over time… straight out of camera algorythm should improve… they may just add an enhance button at the end of your session just so you can see it more clearly in app. I was impressed by the moon and sun and it was very thoughtful of them to make these capture in avi so that you can do stacking easily in post…. I still wish that had added a manual focus option for lunar… as good as the auto focus is… my experience is focus on the moon can always be improved… but it looked nice in the demo so we will see
How much post photo processing is necessary, I struggle a bit with that to be honest, can you process the pics in an iPad ? as it has a very easy uncomplicated program built in ( and I don’t own a laptop)
Fantastic. Thank you. I cant ait to get mine now. This is way more capable than i ever thought it would be. I bought it as a "toy" but its stacking up to be way more than that.
I want this so bad. Do you think its good for beginners? I have a telescope, but have only seen the moon . It's a cheap one, no wifi or anything haha just 3 different lenses. I love looking at the sky, but I'm not to tech savy, unless it's explained very detailed. Thanks for the video
Great video. What Bortle light level did you shoot your samples from? Will the image quality suck in an "urban transition" (level 7) area? Do we need to use this in rural areas only?
Hello, thanks for your videos on the Seestar, I heard mention of a pro version. As I just ordered the Seestar S50, can you tell me more about what is the pro version please?
A very good set up and processing tutorial. Thank you for taking your time to do this and hope you can do some more for people beginning this hobby. Great stuff.
Found your video as I was having an issue where the scope's wifi wasn't on the internet. I think it's all corrected now. The package arrived yesterday (Dec. 27) and of course the weather in Maine is cloudy and rainy so I can't really play around with it much. Thanks for the tutorial, it'll help to have at least seen the stuff once before I'm out in some dark spot in a few days.
Thanks mate nice demoe i just bought this nice telescope but not started yet by the way how to know how to point it? may be pointing it to wrong direction & will it take many photos during that time or only one?
I take pictures of the moon, Jupiter and Saturn with my telescope and phone mount. They look pretty cool for what it is. I’m really interested in this thing though! I just don’t understand how it can take such stunning photos of deep space objects yet Jupiter looks like a blob. With my $100 setup I can see the colors and storms in Jupiter’s atmosphere, let alone multiple of its moons.
All about Focal Length. Telescopes are either geared for deep space or for planetary not both. What makes it good at one hurts it for the other. It's the same reason why most phones have multiple cameras these days. The new iPhones have 3, one for distance, one for normal, and one for close. Think about it that way. Planets are really close, bright, and small where galaxies are very far away, dim, and huge.
Nice review… I’m still sticking with my D2, for now.. But our local Astro Club has an S50 on order so will get a chance to try one out at some point in the coming months.
Awesome, thanks for the reply. Was thinking of getting this as a gift for my wife. Easier to move around then the telescope she got a few years ago. And easier to get pics.
Need to see results after a large set of images. Will the image quality improve? I know this device has ease of use on its side, but would beginners be better to use existing dslr/long lens and just get a star tracker which would be similar costs, better quality?
Awesome video man, something to look forward to when I get my S50? A question though, on the app on the nearby feature, it says you can find a place to shoot. I tried to search for a place (where I normally would go) like to plan and stuff, and it only gives me locations in China (I'm in California) is that still happening as I cannot find US based locations even as the Map correctly shows mine.
I realize the vid was about the Seestar and not so much about the processing. Do you have vids that explain more how to use Siril? Still trying to learn the processing part. How do you think the stacked image on the S50 compares to do doing a live stack on the AA+. I have a redcat 51 so similar focal length.
Yes i do. Check out my channel. I will be making more processing videos in the future too. And for the Redcat, Im not sure, i haven't used that one. Id have to check
Why does everyone I see screw it on like that? There could be two issues? 1 dropping it or 2 increasing the risk of cross threading. For me would rather either tip to Seestar unside down and screw in the tripod or tilt it on its side and screw in the tripod. Screwing it on like that think its a risky way
It lets us level it before putting the Seestar on. Using the app to level it honestly is more tricky in my opinion. The tripod has a built in level on the top
IMHO, you should be able to. If you can't install the 'app' directly to your laptop, you can always install 'emulators' that will emulate an android or iphone and run the app inside of that shell....so to speak. I was thinking about using a simple tablet myself.
I feel like the Seestar still has some work it needs on it, of course i would still buy it for it's apeture and portability. I feel like once dithering and mosaic mode are successfully imported, it would be a very good buy. I would purchase both dwarf ii and Seestar. They both have their benefits
@@ScottCastrophotography I asked Simon what was up with dithering and he said it is doing it now…. So I am at a loss for why we are seeing that noise, perhaps I was wrong to think that would eliminate pattern noise… maybe just reducing it
Hi Scott, I have watched the whole video and I enjoyed it very much until the post processing section. In fact I don’t even own a telescope but the subject fascinates me to the point that I really do want to get one and something like the seestar really appeals to me. Now be honest with me, am I going to be happy with the images straight from the Seestar or am I going to have to post process? Could you show some in processed images on your PC to illustrate the quality. I feel that the post processing bit might be a lot over my head. I am computer literate but I have never understood histograms and colour balance and all that sort of thing. Any honest info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The telescope is not revolving around the chosen subject, so I am still a little perplexed. It seems odd to ignore it. In any event, the video is very useful, so thanks.
@@johnschnupp2351 Thank you very much for explaining that, and it is much appreciated.
Thank you. PS: The better shot would have been to have the trees in focus vs the sun. :-) Cool daytime Moon shots!
First woohoo
Whats up!
Field rotation kills it for me. It’s neat anyway
Wrong, you have been waiting a long time, we are still waiting. You jumped the line being one of ZWO favoured evaluators
Welllll yes okay still waiting yes
At 360p, it's hard to know if it's the Seestar or the video quality that's bad
It's still processing full quality 4k
@@ScottCastrophotography thanks!
@@ScottCastrophotographyIn which case you’d do better to wait until the 4K version has processed before making the video public. Best to mark it private until the 4K version has processed.
@@tarbat my apologies
@@ScottCastrophotographydon’t bother, there are always idi%ts complaining. Everybody knows about the resolution thing, youtube does it for ages. If they can’t wait it’s sure as hell not your duty to publish it later. THEY can wait. Thank you for sharing your opinion about the device 😁👍
Also, has anyone investigated if the images appearing on the phone are actually real images through the lens of the S50 or is it being sent from a database through the phone as a hot spot. I find the results far too good to be through such a small unit.
I've seen clouds through it that pass over my image and ruin it, it's legit. Airplanes too mess it up,

@@schpuddi think he meant any image you can take, regardless of scope, is available already somewhere on the Internet.
@@SuperScottCrawford So there's just no point in astrophotography then?
🙄
@@schpuddyour children can't wait for one time setup. But they can wait 30 minutes for each image from the SeeStar?
A real refractor telescope with just 60x mag gives a perfectly adequate view of Saturn and its rings. And you are looking at the real light with your own eyes , not the light given off by a back-lit LCD display. This is just a gimmic.
For planets it is not suitable. For everything else it is, so not a gimmick. I have an 8”SCT and am a decent astro imager and i’m impressed what can be obtained here…
@@chrislee8886impressed compared to what? Your images should be much better than anything from the SeeStar.
@@MrSummitville true but with a lot more setting up. However my thinking here was more to do with visual using 8”SCT (where galaxies are faint fuzzies) vs what can be secured through SEESTAR with a quick set up and the “lucky imaging”…
This is the most stupid, nosense, biased and ignorant comment I've ever read. Congratulations on being an elitist imbecile.
Thanks! Worked hard on it, and yeah i talked to ZWO and they said the same thing
I preordered the S50 a month ago. Your video is raising my excitement level, and I am ever the much more excited to receive it. Thanks for sharing! :)
I'm really glad you enjoyed!
I still wish that had added a manual focus option for lunar… as good as the auto focus is… my experience is focus on the moon can always be improved… but it looked nice in the demo so we will see
Good points, i agree with all of them
How much post photo processing is necessary, I struggle a bit with that to be honest, can you process the pics in an iPad ? as it has a very easy uncomplicated program built in ( and I don’t own a laptop)
You for sure can see the field rotation in every image (the dark regions). Bummer they won't do polar.
It is a beginner imaging setup = $500.
I guess we are going to see a wedge for the seestar in the future to do proper polar alignment and tracking. would be very easy to implement for ZWO.
Fantastic. Thank you. I cant ait to get mine now. This is way more capable than i ever thought it would be. I bought it as a "toy" but its stacking up to be way more than that.
Just seeing you handle the programs for enhancements was worth its weight in gold. Ordered my scope yesterday. Merry Christmas to me!
…and Merry Christmas to you too.
I want this so bad. Do you think its good for beginners? I have a telescope, but have only seen the moon . It's a cheap one, no wifi or anything haha just 3 different lenses. I love looking at the sky, but I'm not to tech savy, unless it's explained very detailed. Thanks for the video
Yes it's super easy for beginners. Literally tap and go and press the shoot button. Everything is automatic, nothing complicated
How will the app update itself as its not in the app store yet?
Great video. What Bortle light level did you shoot your samples from? Will the image quality suck in an "urban transition" (level 7) area? Do we need to use this in rural areas only?
Mine is 5.5, yours will work fine because it has a built in Light pollution filter😁
Hello, thanks for your videos on the Seestar, I heard mention of a pro version. As I just ordered the Seestar S50, can you tell me more about what is the pro version please?
It is the same device, but a more pro based version of the app for more advanced users
@@ScottCastrophotography Thank you so very much for your quick response.
A very good set up and processing tutorial. Thank you for taking your time to do this and hope you can do some more for people beginning this hobby. Great stuff.
Of course! Any ideas for future content are welcome!
My understanding it will stack the photos for you leaving out the lower quality shots. Wonder if have any plans to make it with a larger aperture?
I doubt it. Not yet at least. Still have to perfect this one before work on another. And yes it does reject bad frames
Think that I'll stick with the Dwarf 2 see what the new software update brings.
It's always good to have both
excellent video - love the live demonstration of everything including your post processing
If you enjoyed this one, i hope you stay tuned for the next test!
Cool video.
You need to crop before doing background extraction though.
Thanks for the tip
Found your video as I was having an issue where the scope's wifi wasn't on the internet. I think it's all corrected now. The package arrived yesterday (Dec. 27) and of course the weather in Maine is cloudy and rainy so I can't really play around with it much. Thanks for the tutorial, it'll help to have at least seen the stuff once before I'm out in some dark spot in a few days.
Thanks mate nice demoe i just bought this nice telescope but not started yet by the way how to know how to point it? may be pointing it to wrong direction & will it take many photos during that time or only one?
Great Job explaining it, looking forward to future videos on the Seestar...
Thanks dude! We're loving the S50!
Great video!
Got mine in backyard pointed at the 🌙 Incredible images.
Loving this thing.

I take pictures of the moon, Jupiter and Saturn with my telescope and phone mount. They look pretty cool for what it is. I’m really interested in this thing though! I just don’t understand how it can take such stunning photos of deep space objects yet Jupiter looks like a blob. With my $100 setup I can see the colors and storms in Jupiter’s atmosphere, let alone multiple of its moons.
it's because of focal length. It's too much to explain here maybe I can make a video explaining that
All about Focal Length.
Thanks everyone for the replies! Good information.
@@Cr125stinit has a 50mm f/5 lens = 250 mm focal length . Low power & Wide field.
Nice review… I’m still sticking with my D2, for now.. But our local Astro Club has an S50 on order so will get a chance to try one out at some point in the coming months.
Any planets pictures from this type of telescope.?
Not the best focal length, so youll mainly just see a bright light
Thanks..
Thank you for the great video! It was also great to see the JW Library app on your computer. 😀
Liked and subscribed!
i have a stupid question, how does it track something?, it only seems to be able to rotate on one axis
It rotates on 2 the base rotates and the lens does 2. It's not polar aligned to there is field rotation but it tracks quite well nevertheless
Awesome, thanks for the reply. Was thinking of getting this as a gift for my wife. Easier to move around then the telescope she got a few years ago. And easier to get pics.
@eclark3d of course, glad to respond to those who ask
Got mine today. Im in North GA. Thank you for the info.
Need to see results after a large set of images. Will the image quality improve? I know this device has ease of use on its side, but would beginners be better to use existing dslr/long lens and just get a star tracker which would be similar costs, better quality?
I'm working on a video with more Exposures, keep an eye out✌🏼👍🏼
Awesome video man, something to look forward to when I get my S50? A question though, on the app on the nearby feature, it says you can find a place to shoot. I tried to search for a place (where I normally would go) like to plan and stuff, and it only gives me locations in China (I'm in California) is that still happening as I cannot find US based locations even as the Map correctly shows mine.
Are you talking about the light pollution map?
Is station mode on Seestar (home wifi) perform better?
Can you do a video of M31 and M42 with this little telescope?
I'm sure i can✌🏼
I just bought one. 😁
Thanks for a well made informative video. What is the background music you chose? I like the little tune.
Solas X Interstellar by Gabriel Albuquerqüe
Would you recommend this Smart Scope The SEESTAR S50 to a beginner into Astro Photography?
Yes 100%
Good vídeo cousin 😀
Thanks friend!
Scott, would a nabula Booster filter improve the image or is it a waste of money?
It already has a built in high quality Duo Band filter. That's actually what the LP filter is which is why it's recommended not to use on Galaxies
Good review Scott. Can’t wait for mine to arrive.
Hope you enjoy it!
Can I control the telescope using my laptop though?
IMHO, you should be able to. If you can't install the 'app' directly to your laptop, you can always install 'emulators' that will emulate an android or iphone and run the app inside of that shell....so to speak. I was thinking about using a simple tablet myself.
Ahhhh yessss light there be POWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR WITH aperture
Yessir, if you still want one link is in my description haha
But u can youes your tabulate or your right
Yes
Scott I already have a telescope setup controlled by the ASIAIR plus would you buy the see star, and how would you compare it to the dwarf 2?
I feel like the Seestar still has some work it needs on it, of course i would still buy it for it's apeture and portability. I feel like once dithering and mosaic mode are successfully imported, it would be a very good buy. I would purchase both dwarf ii and Seestar. They both have their benefits
@@ScottCastrophotography I asked Simon what was up with dithering and he said it is doing it now…. So I am at a loss for why we are seeing that noise, perhaps I was wrong to think that would eliminate pattern noise… maybe just reducing it
Great job, Scott!
Thank you!
Is that a tablet your youesing

Hi Scott, I have watched the whole video and I enjoyed it very much until the post processing section. This is because I’m a complete novice when it comes to astrophotography apart from what I have watched on RUclips over a couple of years. Thanks.
No generally you wouldn't need to post process, but it can bring it extra detail in your image if you do. I Will Be making another video going deeper into post processing with seestar soon
Thanks for the speedy reply and I look forward to your future videos involving the Seestar.

Nope not necessary to see entire sky. No star alignment needed. Just click and point
