hello, i watched this last night, & used our machine again today, but using ur hint of after it cracks the piece, to put it on soft wood mode to speed things up, we filled our truck faster. I must add , i am 69 1/2 yr old gr gr mother & hubby is 61 1/2, & we love working in the wood, we get 16 cord delivered , hard wood. tfs 💪
Without being too cynical, you gave it a 2/5 because you broke some welds on the plate and had some other issues, but right away you read the 12.5” diameter max and decided to use logs that were WAY more than 12.5” diameter. A fair review would be using as specified and see how she holds up. I just got one of these myself and found your video extremely useful. It is unfortunate that yours is broken, but hopefully a lesson learned. The tips were helpful as well, thanks!
Ya your 100% correct, although I fixed it up now and it works good, the main reason I broke it is because I put some un even logs on it and it twisted the frame, i now drilled some holes and put pins in and it still splits the big ones, Thanks for watching and commenting 👊
work around the edges on large logs not straight down center, lol same as with maul splitting!!! ive had one for 15 years n split many hardwood cords n never broke
I am upgrading from a 5 ton to a 9 ton unit this week. My 5 ton with a 10 inch diamter rating (bought used for $100) split at least 6 cords for me, with some soft woods up to 22 inch diameter and hard woods up to 18 inch diameter. The rods at the ram finally bent out of whack and it no longer functions as needed.
One major modification I made to my 5 ton unit, and will also do to the 9 tone unit is to make it one hand / one foot operated. I use a cotter pin to hold the pushbutton in place (drill hole thru top and bottom of the plastic guard). I bought a WEN (metal, not plastic $12) foot pedal from Amazon and have used the 5 ton unit that way for years - its great to have one free hand in case you have to hold the wood down.
There is a warning - Manual, page 21: "After 5 seconds, the pressurized oil becomes overheated and could damage the motor..." . Looks like you didn't read that part. I just bought my second one. I wasn't totally excited about the first one. When it worked, it worked like a fairy tale. When it didn't work there was a lot of trouble. My second one: The wheel axle welded on in a wrong position - one wheel hits the motor. Because there are none available right now, I decided I could do without the wheels. I started splitting, after a few logs, the pusher occasionally just touched the log and returned. After shaking the whole thing it started, for a few cycles, work again - I'd say some sticky valve. Then I heard a metal cracking sound, a washer and a snap ring fell off from the area where the lever hits the pressure valve on the cylinder and oil started pouring out. The guy at the Yard Works call center was quite helpful. I'm taking the thing to their warranty repair shop on Monday.
Good video. I am just returning my 6 ton one as there were some manufacturing defects straight out of the box. Actually making packaging quite hard. Impossible not to notice it. This tells me guys at YardWorks don't CARE. Decided to return it and just get an axe.
Ya i hear ya, i had to modify this one now to work properly, quality control issues. Well its to be expected for the price i guess. I may sell mine, because I don't have a fire pit anymore.
I dig it👍😆 Kinda my feelings about my pole saw.....works for me, but if i used it more. I would definantly look for a bigger beefier version. If you dont mind me askin....what did you spend on that one
And finally, since the ram does not go all the way to the wedge, the wood might not split all the way. I use an 6 inch diameter by 5 inch thick eucalyptus log between the ram and the wood for the final split - pushes the wet wood that won't split on its own all the way thru !
To be honest It is low quality. If you plan to split wood for a long time with it I would consider getting something else. It's not bad if you split small even pieces but big or uneven pieces will twist and break it, hope that helps. Basically it's a case of you get what you pay for.
What you get from China? Some cheap and crazy made crap > Plus they need a 4 way splitter head. I can still split logs with a maul faster. What wears me out is? WRESTLING A GNARLY LOG, Trying to split it. That where they come in handle> on the Gnarly stuff > Plus i enjoy my work out. Feel good splitting logs > Getting your muscles all pumped
It would be easier but those big logs can tip it over so I kept it on the ground for safety, when I go camping I put it on the ass end of the dump trailer, its a nice height to split, thanks for watching.
@@PoplarMechanic build you a table with work space for several rounds and some of the split wood for the house. At least that's what I would do. My age even in a chair that would kill me lol.
No, I wasn't complaining I was just explaining, I modified it with hitch pins instead of bolts and it is still going strong, splits pretty much anything

Awesome! I'm glad it worked out for you, thanks for watching and have a merry Christmas

going strong to this day, I modified it, but it splits anything

Hmm mine still works fine
Exactly the same thing you described just happened to mine. Brand new, broke after splitting 4 pine logs. Very crappy construction.
How's the unit doing now? Did they fix the problem?

Seems to give more bang for your buck compared to the Boss Industrial 7 ton splitter.
I dig it👍😆

I got it on sale for 400 at Canadian tire. If it wasn't on sale I wouldn't have bought it lol.

This would make a sweet recommend when trying to talk home owners into keeping the firewood
Yes it would.
Blessings brother, Was curious to see how it’s holding up?, if your still using it, I’m looking for one to do some light splitting. Thanks.

@@PoplarMechanic thanks man
Try a 4 way split on it. My 4 ton goes through anything. I have a 4 way... bit it needs a little more push. Good for soft woods
Idk why in the hell they got to push the log into the wedge? That uses to much energy. The wedge should drive into the log

Not suppose to hammer it with the axe it says in the user manual
I didn't read the manual lol
I would put the splitter on that pony wall

You complain about the world but then you over exceed the recommended use for its application just because it can doesn't mean it should
