Man this dude is a great teacher, my OG wouldn't let me touch the trowel for 4 years. I had to do my own jobs away from him just to get my flow of laying. But this guy is the truth, great job.
Each one, teach one. Brilliant example of how to "bring" people up to speed in the bricklayer trade. If you truly pay attention and practice, you'll never starve. Great video sir!!!
Your a good teacher man. I know how that guy is feeling in that moment. He just gotta remember nobody was born like that. Everyone had to learn from someone. Reps reps reps reps. He is lucky he gets a little on the job training. Not usually time for that , that's when you build a mach up in your garage and reps reps reps. Real man putting in work when nobody watching.
great patience… need more people in this position teaching others.. i’m a bricky apprentice with a subby gang so no time to teach me just jump on the line or get out the way attitude or stuck doing all the blockwork
A top teacher excellent to see a young man willing to listen and start a career which will make a good living for him and hopefully a happy family in the future
The lad's better than some “bricklayers” on this platform, claiming to be good. You have a nice, patient tone, with the inexperienced, I hope it's not just for the camera.
Great video. It's nice to see you mentor a person who is new to laying masonry. This trade takes time to develop skill and muscle memory. Your apprentice looks promising. Keep up the good work!
I think as a starter he is doing very good must say good teaching bud at list you passing on your knowledge in Canada not much bricklayers are like you good job 👏 continue the great vids
Hes doing good. I would say better push brick against head/ cross joint ,to give fuller joint. Not slide down, which pulls mortar away. Great for first time. And your kindness an patience 👍
For a new guy I would say just make sure you keep your head joints full, try your very best to stay on bond, and about every three or four courses check it with your 4ft level just to make sure your keeping it plum. Also when you strike take your time make it look as nice as you can. If you do that you'll be laying cubes in no time.
Hats off to you it takes patience I teach someone how to do this trade. Cutting away that mud on the bottom as he lays the brick will help him to see what hat he needs to do with the brick as he lays it. I think he did good for his fist time . You staying calm and helping him to stay relaxed and hike trying was good . Threat job guys 👍🏻
Good job at teaching I love your videos! I so wish the ones showing me how to lay bricks would take their time like this to show me like you do! 👍 bricklaying is such a beautiful trade
As you well know it’s all about feel. Only way to learn is to do it. Young man you have an outstanding teacher. Soak it in like a sponge. No short cuts. Learn the right way as you’re instructed and you’ll have a good living and a great career.
Thanks for the lesson 🙂 I have a front porch that I would like to extend because it's too narrow. I'm on a budget so I would like to do it myself. 15ft long X 4ft wide 3.5ft tall. Can I use cinder blocks for the 1st two rows and complete the outer side with the red brick I see you use. What's the red brick with no holes used for? Please explain why some brick have 3 or 2 holes while others have none? Thanks 😊
As a beginner, he should be buttering every head. Either then that good job also when jointing you should strike the jointer on the heads that have been jointed, because when you look up it will look like a hole
Maybe lay a 2x4 flat about waist high and have him practice just Spreading mortar and getting use to the Muck. I think he's got a good teacher... The time you spend now will pay off in the long run!
That’s a lot harder then it looks . When I was younger man I done a bricklaying course in prison it took me three weeks to build a three corse wall 😂😂😂 Be honest I wish I had taken more notice and interest as it’s a good trade . 👍👍👍
Damien needs to be a little bit more relaxed. But all things being equal, he went well. He just needs to remember the basics and try to apply them, especially the "Yardie flick"..... when he is laying down the mortar bed. I know that by now he's doing great; after all, he is fortunate to have one of the best teachers in the business. Awesome video bro.
Great video from a great teacher. For Damian rock the brick into position a bit more to keep mortar in the perp, and can start scraping off before the brick fully down to try to catch more mortar to butter the end. End can also be buttered as soon as have scraping on the trowel. As things progress try to push down to minimise tapping. Great start. Look forward to future video to see how you progress.
Damion is laying his first brick, 26 mins long, bah seems about right lol Nah I really enjoyed the video, it is funny how hard it is to teach somebody, when you yourself are so good at a certain job. It is hard because you do not actually know after a long time how you do things, you just do them and so when trying to show somebody in slow mo how to do the things, it is more difficult than one might imagine lol
Bro i think the way you pour the mortar above the brick is complicated for a beginner who haven't had that feel of the trowel. We can just let the mortar fall off the trowel inward of our hand ,simple✔️✔️
I've watched a lot of bricklayers one thing he's doing wrong is he's not learning how to put the brick down like you do and push it pretty much in place taking too much time trying to position the brick and losing all the Mortar that he can use to butter the front for the next brick. He also needs a lot of practice on initially putting the mortar m o r t a r on the bricks from the board. The last thing I see is when he put the next brick down he puts it straight down and pushes all the Mortar off the brick that he buttered instead of putting it down on a angle like you do. I would like to see some more videos especially on how to set your corners to put your line.
I hope the kid is stuck it out. People, if a white collar job isn't your thing you can earn respectable money working in a trade. Another plus for him is that he's fortunate to work for somebody that is patient and willing to teach him.
It’s not the way that I would teach him. First, I would get 2 saw horses and a sheet of plywood to lay flat across them. Then, I would have him practice shaping, spreading, furrowing, and buttering his bricks, and getting full head joints just on the plywood. Then, I would have him lay 10 bricks across and just build a simple pyramid 10, 9, 8, etc. I would not introduce the string until he is comfortable with spreading mortar, staying on bond, staying on gauge, concentrating on plumb and level. He’s not ready for the string line yet. Sometimes you have to go slow at first in order to go fast later.
There is one thing that I have not heard from any bricklayer say when laying brick, how much gap the mud should be between, bottom or side of a brick. Would you like to comment on this?
👍He have the BEST teacher.....👍👍
Awesome! Wish it was more like you out there paying it forward and more young people willing to get them hands dirty.
I wish everyone was as patient as you Ryan !!!
thank you

I butter my head joint while holding the brick i am laying-not buttering my head joint on the line.I feel it is more of a solid cross joint.
Teach dem teacher 👍👍👍
Big up🙌🏾✊🏾
Good job -maybe he should pick and dip in the begining so the mortor wont set as quick.
Excelent teacher , you’re a master 😎👍👍👍 , I hear some Spanish on the background some Argentines I might be correct, say hello to them 😅😃
Thanks! 😃
Harder to go slow... You're a good teacher! and I love the way you say... Without further adieu!

When you point things out to look for in the work, it would
It would be a great idea to have a close-up shot for clarification.
What kind of mud do you use? or how do you mix your own and if so what do you use?
I'm blessed to have come across your channel. Do you guys come up to Shelburne?
I have a question... What is the ratio for your mortar mix, how much sand to cement?
Your eyes your brain and develop it takes time to develop coordination it takes 5 yrs journeyman and 10 years to be a Master Mason
young man's doing good so far ... few more week's of this put him on the line with someone

The apprentice need to learn how to butter brics the traditional way first before learning the pic and drop method.
Yes, you are right
It's been a year, is he still working as a brick layer?
yes he's doing better now

Give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life! Well done
Brickwork isn’t half bond why is that?

I wouldn't wish that on anybody
Don’t lean toward front stay off line.
You didn't teach him how to mix up the mortar so that he learns to feel that the mortar is the correct consistency
When you get good in about 10 years a Mexican will hire you for12 an hour
