The portrayal of Lex and Clark is incredible in this series. There always seemed this hope for them as if the rivalry never existed and that there was a chance for things to turn out differently. I truly believe Lex was a good person on the inside and that Clark helped bring it out in him. Martha said it in season 4 something along the lines of how Lex isn’t just investing Clark to investigate him but that he’s doing it because ever since he’s met Clark it’s like he’s had a guardian watching over him of course he’d be curious. I truly think this iteration of Lex could have gone on to be Clark’s greatest friend had Clark told him the truth. Clark lied to Lex as often as Lex did to him. It was this incredible portrayal by Tom and Michael as well as the writers who showed that Lex wasn’t the only bad guy here (not that Clark is bad just that Lex isn’t the only one at fault). This series had a way of showing glimmers of hope for an everlasting friendship between them but we all knew it was never going to happen even though we wanted it.

Definitely going to rewatch the series from the beginning but looking over some of this footage from the first season with these two… Makes me feel sad for how the way things fill apart between them because you can see the genuine gratitude that Lex has for Clark having saved his life and it developing into its own sort of brotherly affection with Lex really wanting to help his “little brother” out even if his methods are pretty “cloak and dagger-ish” since it’s what Lex knows. Plus, Lex has that ego and I think in a way he takes a level of deep enjoyment in sort of “spoiling” and “teaching” Clark not unlike an older sibling and more so because Clark is very wholesome and sincere with his delight and his own thanks along with him never seeking to get something out of Lex.
Makes it sadder and unlike the longtime blame that Lionel pinned on Lex for what happened with his baby brother and by extent his mother… Lex is truly to blame for losing his “brother” in Clark.

you know, I just got done watching the clip of the episode with the guy with the handshake and everyone was like "oh, if he just told Lex then things would be completely different with Lex and he might have been good" I honestly think that the clip when he is talking about the battle of troy and gives the necklace to Clark tells how he would've been. He tells Clark that's his power and encourages him to use it. I feel like their friendship would've gone the same way either way but if Clark told him he had powers it would go south quicker because Lex want to use them to further his own goals.

Lex: Clark, how the hell did you get passed my swat team, and cameras, and laser guided alarm system with heat seaking missiles?
Clark: Nah, fam. You left the back door open.
    Lex: Oh, well shit.

I’m not a comic book person. I’ve watched the movies and of course Smallville. In the show Smallville I have to wonder that if Jonathan Kent would have been a father figure to Lex since his own father Lionel was deplorable would he have turned out differently. Jonathan and Martha Kent successfully raised the most powerful person in the history of Earth(this is the opinion of my limited knowledge base). If these same two people would have been Lex’s surrogate parents perhaps it would have made a difference. Watching the show it seems as though Lex yearns for this relationship with Jonathan and each time Jonathan treats him like a pariah. Just wondering….maybe some comic book guys can answer this.

One of the show's creators (Al Gough) revealed that the reason Lex chose to stay with the Kents, in an episode where Lionel disowned him and threw him out of the mansion--is because he wanted a family. And that even though he could've gone anywhere he wanted, no amount of money in the world would be able to buy what Clark and the Kents had. The power it had to keep Clark from using his abilities for evil/crime, would've likely applied for Lex as well.

I feel clark should have been honest with Lex about it instead of hiding it. I feel early on if he would have told him before Lex went crazy Lex wouldn’t have become as bad as he did later on.

That's the decision people must make, hide it and watch it blow up in your face or tell the truth and potentially hurt them.
