    I was under the impression for the longest time that almost all the artistic people around me had passion and that was what helped them become so successful, because how passion is most often describe is like a raging fire that motivates you to just do, do, and do some more. Unfortunately for me, for so many years now, I’ve known that I lacked that, like a candle with the flame snuffed out, and that it hasn’t lit since. Fluctuations in feeling was just mostly dead to me so everything felt like still water. Because of this, I grasped at my artistry like a child clinging to their favorite broken toy, because despite my lack of that passion, art felt like the only thing that I knew how to do. I made art as a way to live, literally--I didn't live to create. This video is a bit of an eye-opener because while I’ve already learned that passion isn’t exactly the bonfire I thought it was, I still haven’t figured out what it is I want to do with my art. I think finding that ‘desire’ should be the first step, finding that connection, and to learn how to really live.

    I can't say I agree this time around with the premise.
    To me the difference between desire and passion is negligible. They both exist simultaneously, if passion exists at all, but I know many who desire something without passion.
    Passion is a committed form of desire, like a sun, not just a campfire, no matter how long the nights are the sun rises again. But desire alone goes out with time.
    Desire is a reaction, for me, to the promise of reward. But, passion seems less logical than desire. Passion is the reward and yet it promises more of itself. It becomes a loop that never ends, it fulfills itself so long as its present, but to not fulfill it, is to suffer a great withdraw or pain from its loss.
    Someone else said it's a lot like love. I agree.
    Passion is a love for an action or way of life. When you don't have it, you grieve, but when it's there, even in toxic ways, it's something you love unconditionally, irrationally, even to the detriment of yourself, just like an abusive child, or a self-destructing spouse, or a bad parent or a distant sibling. Somehow, for me at least, if the love was ever there to begin with, it never leaves even when bad things distance me from people who take bad turns. It's there, waiting to rise again. And such is the same for me and passion. No matter the toxicity my commitment to failed dreams or bad outcomes concerning my passion leads me down, I wait out the night with it and surely enough, even without my concent, the sun rises again, and I'm again passionate about what I love and have always loved and will always love. Because I can't control my reaction of love, it happens without my influence. My actions afterward are mine, and those actions must be centered on drive, and positive engagement instead of the negative, passive kind, but...still the love started it. And it can't fade. No amount of time will let it. Just like I cant live without breathing, I cant live without my passions, even if I tried. Resisting them would be like grieving a death and doing else would be like abandoning my children, and doing them is the purest bliss, but merely looking in their direction...that's the most fiery uncontrolled desire...
    That's how it works for me, anyway. I would say, if my experiences are the same as others, that, people who have passion, cannot really lose it, but people who do...misidentified it.

      What are you passionate about?

  • @shinkamui
    @shinkamui Год назад +313

    the conversation around passion is always interesting. This comment is a bit of a digression, but I think what a lot of us have to think about, especially with how mentally unwell a lot of us artist are, is if what we're pursuing is really our passion or just something born out of our bad baggage. How in the world do you heed your passion most true to yourself, an act that requires immense courage and love, if deep in your heart you find yourself unworthy, or unlovable, or shameful. How do you get the strenght to say ''i'm gonna have this vision and excel at it, despite it not being what most artists do and take this unknown road'' if your entire life has been hiding your truest colors because you'd be made to feel lesser for expressing them
    A lot of people get their passion from the most cardboard cut of art they find, and they will call it passion because its the one they can brandish and not get bashed by it. Or they can show to their parents and not get shouted at. Or if they do get shouted at, the most successful trend is also the one most defendable 'passion' to take right, even defendable to yourself, something that you won't feel so exposed about. Sometimes people have to take the tiniest crumb of their passion and dilute with what's been proven as a defense mechanism. And it's just what you gotta do at the time.
    To artists out there feeling the deep need of drawing out of passion from the bottom of your heart; consider pursuing security first if you don't have it, or at least distance to the worst people in your life. It's hard, maybe impossible, to flourish in the middle of a wild fire. It's also kind of unfair to yourself to expect flourishing in this beautiful inner world of creativity if you're surrounded by people that are constantly intruding, disrespecting you, constantly making you spend your mental space on those issues.

      I began taking my art career seriously in 2019, when I was at the lowest point of my life. My dreams and vision gave me warmth during those cold days. I didn't have the confidence or time to seriously pursue it until last year. And now just recently, I'm in a loving romantic relationship for the first time of my life. And it healed a lot of feelings of pain and alienation that created my story. I found myself feeling dull and uninterested in my story then. My creativity came from a place of lack. Now I'm trying to figure out how to create from a place of fulfillment.

      Thank you for writing this, I resonate with every word you said strongly, especially the part related to low self-esteem and not really knowing yourself.
      A lot of my self-esteem is honestly attached to art, as well as what I’m able to express and how much technical progress I’ve made, but I haven’t drawn anything of substance (beyond some doodles) in over a year. It is the worst art block of my life, I want to draw but somehow the flame is gone. And now I’m questioning whether or not I legit am an artist or was it just a coping mechanism for being a lonely kid in the past? It was one of the few things I was good at, I aspired to make a career out of it, and now it’s like I can’t even be bothered to turn on the tablet. Working full-time in a unrelated field while going to college for a semi-related field doesn’t help.
      I’m fighting for my motivation back though, and apart of that is digging deeper and fixing myself.
      Something is missing or broke.

    You helped me realize that I in fact am quite divorced from my art. The idea of people around me looking into me through my art is terrifying, i was surprised to discover that to a degree I am ashamed of my art. I am ashamed of what people see when they look at my art, ashamed of the looks I’d get if Id present myself as whatever I wanted. because my art shows a part of myself not even I fully understand yet. I’m drawn to concepts that sometimes disturb others.

When u get glimpses of his workplace, it literally looks like someone turned a Hobbit hole into an art studio. He has such a retro style from his art supplies (e.g. sketchbook, bag, camera, etc.) to his own clothes n car. He's like a character in his whimsical story. This has helped me realize that there should be a balance between fueling our creative desire...... and the practice of creating art, cuz I very often find myself overwhelmed and carried away with things that fuel my desire, moving from inspiration to inspiration, energy to energy, so much that I often get carried away and paralyzed to create art. So, just to add , I think it also helps to have a regular day to day practice of art creation through which we can always fit in and act on our creative desires.

    For the longest time I've been a terrible, chronic procrastinator. Just putting stuff off across my entire life. Drawing that new thing I thought could be cool? That can wait until tomorrow. I'll get to it later. And this really affected my art. But recently, I've accepted that I have a problem and am working on improving. For me, I have to work to dissolve the negative emotions and thoughts I create when an idea hits me. They aren't about the activity itself, it's a negative story about the activity that my mind forms. To escape those negative thoughts, I was pushing my ideas aside and distracting myself with a myriad of things.
    When you start listening to yourself and your ideas, it feels great. Not shoving off stuff I thought would be interesting is bringing my passion back for art. The desires are creeping back in, slowly, as I listen to my mind for the sprinkles it sends me. Your video makes me think about how I've been doing lately. The role of desire is key, and I'm glad to know I'm starting to find my way again on something pivotal.

    There's always a lot of valuable psychological and practical advice in your videos, on top of them just being really comforting and reassuring. There was one point in this video, however, that really made me feel alienated. I'm a rather reserved person and the idea of letting my passion for art/aesthetic permeate through all aspects of my life and my surroundings feels really overwhelming and superfluous to me. So I'm asking myself, if I don't look like an artist, if my space does not look like an art studio, if my mode of expression and outside interests do not fit with the idea of being ''artistic'', does that make me any less of an artist? Does this stun my growth as one? And these are not just arbitrary concerns, but a very real feeling of ''otherness'' that I've experienced communicating with other artists. Maybe I'm overextending your point here, but it made my mind immediately jump back to a show I watched as a child, where two characters were setting increasingly weird and arbitrary rules for a third, artist character what he had to do to be considered an artist, such as ''An artist has to wear green'' or ''An artist has to be tall.''

    Hi Adam, first of all thanks for this video and all the others in your channel, as a beginner artist, I love to hear your perspective on the subject. I felt a bit heavy hearing this one however, and I think it is because as much as I agree with you that having an inspiring space or artistic self expression will help you get a flow of creativity, these things are usually not easily achievable in most of my life or among other artists I know.
    Unfortunetly we work in far from ideal places, usually noisy and not ours so we can't really customize it. Even when I get in flow sometimes there's always a disruption or something else going on that I need to address and will pull me right out of it, especially if I consider family. And I know the importance of what you're talking because I feel it everytime I can reach this inspiration and creativity moments. I guess I just feel very frustrated that in this point of my career and with responsabilities I have today this isn't something I can truly grasp at most times, and I know how much better my work would be if I could. I guess I just have to push harder and work through that in order to reach future times where I'll be able to afford building this safe and productive evironment, even if it's just isolating with headphones or having the sufficient materials for my work. Anyway, I'll come back in the future and listen to it again in hopefully a better position ❤ Good luck to all!

Trying to compete in a saturated market thus becomes comparison to others works and a cycle begins. What I truly learned throughout my life of art is it's never been about the finished piece but how I feel whilst creating. That's really the most important aspect of art. Fir me art is really is a kind of therapy 😌 a truly joyful experience

    so much realization and learning after listening to this while me drawing
    It really hit me so deeply, because I was passionate to this and that things but I never got the drive to do it because of things like video games such as elden ring, FFXIV, valorant and more. I keep consuming those types of entertainment rather than consuming things that are my passion. Well, it is my fault, video games are that fun!. Back to my point and realization it really hits me about the part that I should be consuming things that is my passions but instead I keep consuming video game content and loosing this passion to work on my interest because it is now replaced with these video game knowledge and curiosity. Thanks for the video it just made clear from what should I do and I shouldn't.

    Hey Adam, I watch your videos over 4 years now. A lot of stuff changed in my life since then, I finished highschool, dropped out of university, moved away from all my friends and family to be with my current boyfriend (which I love and do not regret moving here a bit). Me as a highly communicative and friendly person, I really miss all of them. I found my first job, a home office job, which was my financial saviour but grounded any personal contact with people for which I hoped so bad and to be honest its just repetetive and not creative job at all and it kills me. On top of that, I never had a art teacher that would actually teach me anything that I didn't already known and I feel really stuck, worrying that I won't get better at what I do and will never be able to find a nice job that I will love to the core. I just wanted to thank you for what you do for the comunity. You unite people, waking up the best of them and giving them hope, giving them the feeling that they are not alone when they need it the most. Thank you.

      I find that passion most often just comes to mind when whatever you love doing gets rough in some way. So funny enough, the german word for passion is "Leidenschaft". If you add just 2 characters - a space and an additional f, writing it as "Leiden schafft" it suddenly translates to suffery creates/ achieves.

    This reminded me of a moment when a couple came to our house and knew I was a cartoonist. The gal was all like.. ooh..let's see your studio! I think I know what she was expecting.. figurines, toys, walls covered with art, my online friends latest kickstarter produced art books all neatly sorted and displayed for maximum effect, tools of the trade nicely set out on the drawing table, next to stacks of sketchbooks, etc..
    Reality check...I share this 13 ft. space with the laundry, my drawing table was clear..mainly because I'm digital these days, there's a work table for my occasional sewing habit and there's patterns on nails on the wall, machines clustered with no adorable self-made covers. The other side has my Cintiq and desktop, printer/scanner and a few inspirational art books sitting on the printer so I can have them at arms reach. One is falling apart because I look at it so often. Oh yes, and sometimes there's some extra items stored in there from a Costco grocery run.
    After the 2 second studio tour, she was diverted by my husbands anime, and I sat down talked some shop with her husband, who was a writer.

  • @yoshistover5881
    @yoshistover5881 Год назад +1

    Maybe this is the answer I was looking for. I'm an artist, got a degree in fine arts. I realized some point during the pandemic whatever desire I had to draw just died. Mind you up until then, my day to day life was. Wake up look at Twitter for art I liked. Go to school or work, return home for dinner and draw till 2 A.M and wake up at like 6 or 7 almost every morning. It's been about four years since, I basically quit drawing.
    Somewhere along the way I lost whatever kept me engaged. I lost touch. What kept you engaged (lovecraftian stuff), I lost that. Just one day none of my interests engaged me in the way it did you. I couldn't tell you what changed, but it felt almost like the world bored me, and maybe that's why I can't draw anymore. Granted it's not like, I'm not trying to find something that brings me joy. I'm looking around all the time for something new and interesting, but everything I try just feels dry and uninteresting. Maybe I'm on the right track to keep looking though, cause I thought maybe I was on the wrong track. So thank you.

    I first found this channel while searching to learn more about progressing in life, like self-help channels usually do, and I have been pondering on more than what I thought I would be. I had one question burning in my mind before the first video I listened to, but now I have two: How do I know I am ready for something that I have been trying to prepare for? More relative for an artist or a creator, how do I know if I have a "Planeswalker's spark" equivalent to creativity, if there is a way of knowing besides having numerous ideas, places, or bits of potential flying in and out of view of the window that is the mind? I suppose what I'm asking with my second question is, "Could I also be a creator/artist (if I get over myself)?"

    • @littlejoker2569
      @littlejoker2569 Год назад

      In response to your final question, sure. Just start making stuff or learning the ways of making stuff. Learn, play, fail, do again a little better.
      For an artist it’s putting visuals to an idea you have.
      Or rather anyone who has an idea.
      So don’t worry about labels or identity or what you’ve done before.
      I think it’s probably very common to carry around self narratives or presumptions about who are and what you’re “allowed to do.” It’s all kinda bogus though.
      If you have the means to create, do it. Don’t let the limiting thoughts decide how you will live your life. I have to remind myself this occasionally.
