When I started out I never thought I'd be using the same methods that made me a better floor layer from a guy that lives in Arizona! Hey!! Always taught top to bottom that way u trap the riser in on landing and work down.you bolster carpet in as you go down being carefully not to go through it.then lean your weight on hammer and smooth up onto grips to take any slack up.also no underlay on riser the edge of gripper can rub on backing of carpet if customer rubs heel as they come down stairs on riser then gripper edge cuts into backing of carpet.the idea is if you use gripper you use underlay too soo carpet similar height to grips no bump then just hooks on gripper perfectly.like the gripper on the sides although normally only on twists.no need for carpet stretcher to be fair.I also like to roll sides of carpet leave a gap on underlay and carpet drops in.ive found u cut width too net will fray.always cut slightly bigger so cut edge rolled and protected. Good video just different methods.
I enjoy your videos, never too old to learn some new things, but I always used tack strips on the tread, risers, and sides of the tread. Showing my age, but carpet tackers were never used on any part of an installation when I first learned the installation business. They are great tools, and I have used them but "tackless" will hold much better than a carpet tacker. The carpet will at times pull right through the staples. Not to mention an Axminster carpet would be destroyed in no time if only installed with a carpet tacker. Keep focusing on the quality of your work. I am trying to be constructive in my comments, keep up the good work and videos.
I’m sorry my English is not really good but I have to thank you for your video was really good as a support in my job it helps me a lot your explanation was so clear and I did as the way you say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS VIDEO
Amazing to see how we all do things . Here in Ireland it’s 90% waterfall with double grips ( strip on riser & thread ) . Also nobody grips the sides unless it’s a kite or winder (turn) step . Some people will request bullnose style , me personally hate it . We never use a knee kick on a step either. Still great video 👍
Installing carpet with the waterfall technique is becoming a lost art. Don't think there's many who can install on the bottom big step or bullnose with the waterfall technique. Sewing those and caps is a lost art as well.
Robert Missimer just 26 years for me I don’t see how people last 40 and 50 years doing this I’m looking at maybe five More years tops, this is breaking my body down
Interesting where I’m from we only use electric staple gun . No tack strip unless concrete steps once in a blue moon . Then we use the tack strip method. But never seen anyone use tack strip on the sides . I always contour (Chicago style ) or whatever you call yours lol also . Just a tip we all use white rubber mallets instead of hammer. Not as loud hitting the stair tool . Thanks for sharing .
I do carpet repair and most steps don’t have tack strips on the sides. When a customer calls with wrinkles on the steps I have to explain to them that yes I can get most of the winking out but you will see a few dimples on each side from my carpet staples. One day I hope to do a wrinkle repair and find those side tack strips. I Wish it was common practice to do it your way.
Don't your find that it leaves an unnecessary gap on the riser when you upholster the stair with tack? I understand it with waterfall, but not sure why you would with an upholstered step, does it seem to help on installation?
I always strip the riser when doing waterfall. None when doing bullnose. Always like strip on the side of the treads as well. I feel that ticking the sides look better and prevents fraying of the cut edges

I’m about to attempt this also so this video was really helpful in seeing the different methods in installing carpet on stairs. I have a nail gun with staple or nail tacs. Which Would you recommend? I can also see you recommend from the nose to the riser which I assume keeps it all secure and tight? I’ve seen varying tools used. Thanks
Joaquin Martinez Depending on where the squeak is you would probably be better off just fold in the carpet back fixing the floor and then laying the carpet back down without cutting it if you’re able to do that kind of depends on where the floor is squeaky
Your way is different than mine but doesn’t mean we’re wrong. Also if you put tack strip on the bottom of riser and on the stair you can can work your way down with just the chisel.
Peter Dimperio Thank you I appreciate that and I appreciate you for watching thank U, if you happen to think of anything that I have not covered in previous videos I am open for recommendations
Thanks for the video! I want to put carpet down only on the tread, what would be best, tack strip on the tread and side of, staple gun and side tack? Also should I be doing underlay?
Thank you for the video! I am going to try the staple method of doing my back stairs. Question… Do you cut off the carpet after stapling down on the tread each time before you begin to do the next rise and tread? It looks like the other two methods using tac strip can be done in a continuous piece of carpet. Thank you for your answer.
Jenny Lyn Sparrow no ma’am, it can be done in a continuous piece as long as your stairs run straight, if your steps get wider or narrower then that’s when you have to cut a separate piece, as long as they are straight you can run a continuous piece
I have to learn how to carpet a house in a day or I'm going to get fired. My boss has to do all the carpet because nobody else knows how and I feel bad because he has to do all the work. Thanks for making me a professional
I've been doing flooring for more than 30 years and there are 100 different ways to do any job. If you are busy, don't have call backs and have repeat customers who give you the next job without asking price in advance you know you are doing something right. I have seen some wierd stuff through the years like a circular pie staircase done in one big piece.
CONNIE HAWKINS A lot of people confuse commercial carpet with indoor outdoor carpet, if it is commercial carpet with an action back on it then yes at Tack strip
Hi there, can you tell me what knives you use. In UK our general knives are the Delphins but you guys seem to use the same type. Also your staple guns look alit better. What's the make? Cheers
I just removed the stair carpet the builder in stalled 20 years ago. I was quite surprised there was no tack strip anywhere, I never knew that was an option. And yet the carpet was nice and tight all these years without any issue from poor installation. They used about 7 staples across the width of the 36" steps, but you used a TON more staples. I was thinking I pity the poor guy who has to take all those staples out!
Jaymee Smith measure diagonally from corner to corner and then measure from the point at the back of the step over to the floor in the front of the step And that will give you the size you need and you can go from there
i perfer to kick my carpet..and i always run my unferlay either to the smoothedge on the riser for waterfall style or wrap the under lay to front of the nosing for contour edpecially if thete is a definte patern in the carpet(easier to maintain a strait line across the nosing)
George Reed You can do one piece as long as the steps are straight, if they get an arrow at the top four wide at the top then you have to split it and cut a wider or more narrow piece to make it fit
Im a fitter from the UK been fitting 16 years, we fit them differently, i also though in america they cap and band every step separately, i prefer this way of fitting though i wish they fitted like this in the uk
Decker Morgan Mine is a Crain , But they do not make them like the one mine is anymore, the one that took its place is a little bit smaller, they have the small ones and big ones mine is a medium one because it’s over 20 years old
It's such a plush carpet I can't tell! In all my years I've never screwed gripper to stairs I've always used my staple gun. I like the tip about the angle of your staple gun under the bull-nose. I totally agree with you to gripper the riser and tread you'll never have a more tighter safer step, when I fit stairs I go top down I've tried bottom to top and I didn't like it! plus how do you match striped stairs when you start from the bottom?
sausage man if I was doing some striped steps I would do the top flap first where it comes out of the hallway measure over from And Row cut the rest of my steps to where they would match up with the top not an issue that’s how I do steps That have a pattern match

I actually "kick" the width rather than little push you give. That's the old way. A smart installer does width with a "kneeless" installation tool. Waterfall style stems from stair cases that don't have a nose but the riser is slanted where it meets the tread below it. How you place your tackless when doing waterfall with noses will depend on the angle of the carpet as it comes down, and the thickness of the carpet. Installed too high an you will only catch the first row of pins. Waterfall is a good alternative when the noses are small and the carpet is thin.
You said 3 different ways!! In the UK, we don't tack it under the nose as a rule, except for the bull nose!! We just get it really tight from gripper to gripper...

Different strokes for different folks Im a carpet fitter over thirty years and was trained by a old school fitter,I have never had a call back on a flight of stairs, I never used gripper on side of steps, never needed to I just measured twice and cut once Sinai was as tight to the wall as one can be, Tacking? staples? I would have been fired!! And never did I use a hammer to tuck between thread and riser I used a blunted bolster chisel and used force of my hand of course never hitting at an angle but directly at where I would know the joint would be from thread to riser. The only times tacks staples would be used is in the bull nose or if they were open steps. I guess these method’s would do for a novice not enough yardage £££ in a stairs and landing to play around with gripping the side and using a stretcher where a stretcher was never designed to be used. But like I said different strokes …..

great job, thanks for sharing this.
Dave Thawley You’re welcome thank you for watching and thank you for your comment
do you use tack strips with outdoor/indoor carpet?
CONNIE HAWKINS A lot of people confuse commercial carpet with indoor outdoor carpet, if it is commercial carpet with an action back on it then yes at Tack strip
@@FloorsbySouthernboys no, its indoor/outdoor turf type going on wooden basement steps. i guess stapling or gluing are probably suitable.
We're stepping on tack point from the tack strip at the crease of the steps. Im having to hammer down. Is this a poor job or common for all?
lmgpharm Sounds like they are not placed properly, you should not be able to step on them
Did you maybe put the tack strip backwards?
Thin carpet ?
Cheap fkn carpet
Hi there, can you tell me what knives you use. In UK our general knives are the Delphins but you guys seem to use the same type. Also your staple guns look alit better. What's the make? Cheers
orcon action knife staple gun is duofast
Doing it the right way nice as always boss
Don victory Thank you sir
Where is the reveal video?
I just removed the stair carpet the builder in stalled 20 years ago. I was quite surprised there was no tack strip anywhere, I never knew that was an option. And yet the carpet was nice and tight all these years without any issue from poor installation. They used about 7 staples across the width of the 36" steps, but you used a TON more staples. I was thinking I pity the poor guy who has to take all those staples out!
BluesriderDF 😂
I doubt you can answer in time, as my wife wants this done today, but how do you cut for diagonal steps at the top of a staircase?
Jaymee Smith measure diagonally from corner to corner and then measure from the point at the back of the step over to the floor in the front of the step And that will give you the size you need and you can go from there
@@FloorsbySouthernboys Thank You!
Jaymee Smith 👍
@@FloorsbySouthernboys Well, I got e'm done. Not the best in the world, but my wife likes it! Thanks again!
Jaymee Smith awesome, good job 👍
Forgive my cander but double strap when you're capping a step will leave a lumpno your riser if you waterfall them it wont show
In engeland snijden ze het ondertapijt bij de voorkant van de trede af,
Ik vouw het ondertapijt om de trede heen, zo ktijg je een mooie volle trede.
Bert Eiling ???
why not use a mallad on your stair tool compared to metal hammer and have you ever put your foot thru the dry wall
John Gliege I have started using a mallet, and yes I have put my foot in the drywall before
@@FloorsbySouthernboys that always gotta suck..your stairs look good and i have done all 3 methods just in different scenarios
i perfer to kick my carpet..and i always run my unferlay either to the smoothedge on the riser for waterfall style or wrap the under lay to front of the nosing for contour edpecially if thete is a definte patern in the carpet(easier to maintain a strait line across the nosing)
Awsome Job I thought you have to cut each individual step, now I know is one complete piece 😀
George Reed You can do one piece as long as the steps are straight, if they get an arrow at the top four wide at the top then you have to split it and cut a wider or more narrow piece to make it fit
Im a fitter from the UK been fitting 16 years, we fit them differently, i also though in america they cap and band every step separately, i prefer this way of fitting though i wish they fitted like this in the uk
hello. nice job. Can you tell me how much you charge people for same stairs job?? 150? thank you
Daniel Kawrow $12 for bullnose stamps plus yardage
i say put the tack strips on the face and save more staples and i like how the screws do stronger than nailing it or shooting it
What stair tool do you have? Been wanting to know the difference between Roberts and Crain.
Decker Morgan Mine is a Crain , But they do not make them like the one mine is anymore, the one that took its place is a little bit smaller, they have the small ones and big ones mine is a medium one because it’s over 20 years old
Wouldn't you just love to see him try to fit a Roger Fells wilton?
but u use in the easy jobs whta about if u do in concrete stairs?
Jose Antonio Obviously you have to tack strip it or glue it with no pad
how long it will take u to do a job like that ?
Jose Antonio The one in this video about an hour if it was on concrete there is a lot of different factors to determine the time
if u work whit a pattern carpet like berber in the backing is not runing strait can u give as a tip how to work whit it?
Jose Antonio I always tax strip the sides of the steps so I can make any adjustments I need if the carpet does run off
It's such a plush carpet I can't tell!
FloorsbySouthernboys when you get some striped stairs you'll have to do a video to show me.👍
sausage man Will do
What size staples , and what type of staple gun do you use?

I actually "kick" the width rather than little push you give. That's the old way. A smart installer does width with a "kneeless" installation tool. Waterfall style stems from stair cases that don't have a nose but the riser is slanted where it meets the tread below it. How you place your tackless when doing waterfall with noses will depend on the angle of the carpet as it comes down, and the thickness of the carpet. Installed too high an you will only catch the first row of pins. Waterfall is a good alternative when the noses are small and the carpet is thin.
😀👍

You said 3 different ways!! In the UK, we don't tack it under the nose as a rule, except for the bull nose!!
We just get it really tight from gripper to gripper...
Anyone got a link for the staple gun

Nice edit but I am still wondering if that stair tool was stuck between those tack strips.
Mellow Man 😂 no sir
No difference at all! Very clean and neat!!!
What was your cost on just doing those stairs????
Steve Allen If you’re talking about for labor I get $12 a step for bull nose
@@FloorsbySouthernboys ok.. thanks.. nice job
Thanks cool dude
You bet
The tread is what you step on. The riser is the up and down.
