    To echo every other commenter, thank you for the video, it’s been very helpful. I have a couple of comments and a question. First, it’s worth mentioning that for anyone with a 2019 or later TRD Pro, removing the factory rack can be a delicate operation. I ended up breaking at least one of the clips between the chassis and headliner when removing the OEM bolts. If the discussion boards I found after the fact are accurate, the Pro OEM racks are installed after arrival in the US, and Loctite Red is used. Fortunately the repair was not expensive, but it was definitely annoying. Proceed carefully, Pro owners.
    Second, for those who want to be extra cautious when lifting the Gobi rack into place, I suggest making use of the rack’s cardboard packaging. I set the rack on the cardboard, cut out some pieces to facilitate gripping the rack, and used a little bit of blue tape to secure it. I also put a couple towels on the roof. A friend and I lifted it overhead and set it into place without incident. We then carefully slid the cardboard out, dropping bolts into their holes as we went to prevent the rack from sliding as we removed the cardboard.
    The question I have concerns the ladder. With the hardware and brackets is a postcard-sized insert with an explicit instruction to use ant-seize on all fasteners. I noticed you didn’t do this when installing the ladder, and I’m curious why. I saw some of the other comment threads concerning stainless steel galling, so perhaps this explains Gobi’s instruction.
    Thanks again for the video.

      @TimmyTheToolman  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing your experience with the install. Yeah, we didn't use the anti-seize but it wouldn't hurt. I just didn't see the necessity in it.

    Im sitting on top of my roof rack drinking a beer as I am typing this comment. All i gotta says THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This video made the installation a breeze. You were beyond accurate with your descriptions. I really enjoyed how you explained which socket wrench length or whatever was needed for each set of bolts. Saved me a hell of a lot of time in deciding what was the right size. Also your tip on not tightening the bolts down after the rack is placed on top of the 4 runner WAS HUGE. You provided a TON of little hacks such as using the tape as well. I am now a Timmy the Tool Man fanatic and will be looking for your videos when it comes to my next add on for my Toyota 4Runner.

    Hey Tim, another update:
    Got my kit yesterday morning and finally got it all installed today!
    No real hitches, other than one of the mounting brackets falling into the headliner that I managed to fish up and into place with some bailing wire, but all in all everything is done and looks good!
    Your video was most helpful, especially the ladder section as Gobis directions for that part suck.
    Thanks again!

    Great video! Helped me tremendously. One omission in the video was that the factory rail covers have an end piece you snap loose before prying the cover off. This makes it a lot easier to get the covers off. That step is in Gobi’s instructions.

    Very informative and high quality video. Just installed my Gobi rack and this video was perfect. In my opinion, Gobi's written instructions seemed overly complicated, so Timmy's video definitely simplified the install.
    One thing - Gobi seems to have updated the lock nuts on the wind visor and they are no longer too tight.

      Hey Stephen, glad you like the video. Good look with the install when you finally get your rack delivered. I see nothing has changed with their production time. Timmy The Toolman just finished up! Looks great! The only issue we had was getting the front support bracket raised up a full 3 1/4”. We were pulling and prying. Absolutely could not get it to work. It’s at around 3”. Not sure if that’s just for looks, or for a better alignment of the fairing in the front? At the end of the day. It’s on and I am truly impressed by Gobi. Excellent craftsmanship, packaging, and directions. Quality product. Worth the money and the wait.

      @@nunyabidnes5253 I bet there's some small variances that happen from the production process. I imagine they use jigs to hold everything square but that's not a guarantee there won't be some slight differences between one rack and another. Glad you got it installed with little issue.

  • @cabuzzi

    Great video. My only question (and I don't expect you to speak on the company's behalf) is why anti-seize over blue/yellow Loctite? Even the factory hardware had it (as it should). Even if you have to remove the rack at some point, blue Loctite is harmless, and would preclude having to tighten/retorque the bolts every few months. The bolts look galvanized, so seizure/bonding shouldn't be an issue.

    • @TimmyTheToolman

      It doesn't make sense to have to use anti-seize for fasteners just so they don't break upon installation. I think they should spec their fasteners from another supplier. You usually only use anti-seize when you're worried about corrosion. Anyways, glad you like the video.

      Yea I think the grade of stainless steel that is very corrosion resistant is not very hard, and behaves differently than regular steel when threads are engaged. The anti-sieze acts more like a lubrication on the threads, which is why they also use nylon locking nuts to keep them on long-term. There's always a trade-off when picking metallurgy of fasteners, and it seems they opted for corrosion resistance over dry-thread performance.

    Awesome vid!! Super helpful when watching and comparing against Gobi's instructions, I've watched countless times in preparation for my install this weekend. Hope more vids like this to come for the 5th gen 4runner! One question regarding the Wind Deflector install, any thoughts on why they have you put it on only to remove before applying the clear tape?
    It seems you could skip the initial install and put down the clear tape first using their "guidelines" and then proceed to install the wind fairing? I guess it makes for a more accurate placement of the tape, but it would seem with 2in of tape that there's a bit of room for error as to where the rubber on the bottom-side of the fairing would sit? If you had to do it over again, would you have just placed the clear tape down first or did you find that it was helpful to install the wind fairing first before removing and applying the tape?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 года назад

      Glad you found the video helpful. Yeah, the wind deflector steps did seem a bit unnecessary but it does afford the most accurate placement of the clear tape. Maybe to speed up the install you could get the wind deflector up on the roof in roughly the position it will be in to eyeball where the tape would need to go, get the tape on and then install the deflector.

      @@TimmyTheToolman Hey back for a little update: got the Stealth on order, about 9 weeks to go haha. got the large toolbox added for free :)
      I had a question about the install but I don't know if you'd be able to answer this. I have a 19 TRD Pro with the new FJ style rack, and when I removed that rack I noticed that I have no nylon white 'guide' tubes in the bolt holes like other 5th gens do. It's just bare there. I don't know if that will be an issue when I install but we'll see.
      Regardless, the main question I had was with the back plate that the bolts screw into, under the skin/above the headliner. I've heard and read conflicting reports of which models/versions have this, but mine definitely does. There seems to be a plate that the bolts mount to, rectangular in shape, one per mount location. A couple of mine are loose due to the tack weld coming disconnected when I took out the former racks torx bolts, and I'm concerned they'll fall into the headliner when I remove the filler bolts I have in now in preparation for the Gobi hardware. Do you know anything about this, and if so, can you possibly provide any tips on how to avoid messing up the install?
      Thanks so much. Great video :)

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 лет назад

      Hey David, I thought the same thing but no nylon lock nut I've ever used required lubrication to not break. There is something wrong with these fasteners. The nylon is just there to add resistance to the nut so it can't easily loosen and back off the bolt. I think they should source the nuts and bolts for the wind deflector from a different supplier.

    • @davidpederson2180

However, I contacted Gobi regarding this issue and their response is "you need to use anti seize or the problem you're describing will happen". So, for anyone else out there I would suggest taking the extra few seconds and apply anti seize to the hardware on the wind deflector.
