      The movie is poorly written. You don't go back when you find your own fucking child sleeping in the bedroom of strangers who ARE NAKED. It's just trash, I didn't enjoy the movie a bit.

    • @aliquidcow
      @aliquidcow Год назад +2

      @@YunoGasai414 That was my biggest problem. When they go back and they're trying to explain why they want to leave, surely you would just be like 'I found my child in bed with you and your husband was naked, that's completely out of order, we're leaving'. Even though the wife is like 'but she was crying, where were you?' - well then you could have woken us up. Found that very unconvincing.

    'Creepy' is the wrong word for it, it is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen... It is even more disturbing when you think that a lot of things like this and worse than this are happening in reality. Some things seem unrealistic about it, in terms of how certain characters react, but the world is a big place with all sorts of people, so perhaps some people would react in woefully inadequate ways when circumstances demand something else.

    Watched it today, thought it was rather good, although the plot beats are extremely predictable - reminded me of the 'characters trying to save face' from Ostlund, with a smattering of Funny Games and The Strangers. Not one I'll be wanting to see again, but some very interesting character dynamics!

    I just watched this last night, and Mark is right when he says it's very unsettling. As a social satire on societal norms and etiquette it's pretty sharp. It's an exercise in how to build tension, and it is an uncomfortable watch if just for how the Dutch couple behave in front of their Danish guests. And not least how Patrick the Dutch husband starts overstepping his bounds towards the Danish couples daughter, and his treatment of his son during the dance scene. Throughout I was wondering where this was going to go, and boy, the final twenty-five minutes are something else. It takes a while to get where it's going but the payoff definitely made it worthwhile.

      A lot of people/families are going through even worse than this in the real world though, despite most of us living in a delusional, anaesthetised, rose tinted bubble. It is highly disturbing, but more disturbing is when you start thinking about reality.

  • @Loakers
    @Loakers Год назад +1

    This film was frustrating - there's a ton of clever techniques, moments and decisions, that turn the dials of tension, and some of it is SO good, genuinely uncomfortable and awful! Then it makes some stupid choices that undermine that tension. This film annoys me *because* it's so close to being genuinely brilliant and in a class of its own.
    Still VERY much worth a watch - plenty of times your skin will crawl

    • @ZaydDepaor
      @ZaydDepaor 2 месяца назад +1

      A few times the reactions and decisions seem unrealistic, but in the real world people do dumb things and fail to do the right and obvious thing a lot. A lot of people endure oppression and torture as well as let it happen to others as they fail to act in time or stand by scared and cowardly.

    A movie that teeters between reasonable and unreasonable--from a meta sense. The writing tries to manipulate you into believing that the things that happen in the movie are just benign enough to justify a polite passivity. The problem is that during the middling half of the movie, a relatively dangerous implication happens and one character decides to recede their concern over this potentially evil thing from a simple talk in a kitchen with other parties involved. It really just tries to justify the unjustifiable. That is what pulls me out of the movie. There are a myriad of these instances, but the major one, and the most significant one--which snitches on the ending--leaves a lasting impression of implausibility that casts a larger shadow than the fear the movie wants to elicit.
    I would've enjoyed the movie much more if there had been a GOOD point the movie was trying to make, more than just 'being too agreeable.' It doesn't even try to connect it to symptoms of modernity and the gradual, instinctual erasure to a point of not recognizing danger. It leaves out those implications, and instead simply relies on the randomness of picking several people out of a group and betting, through non-absolute personality ques, that they happen to be gullible enough to be treated like the film displays. The message would've been much stronger had it given itself a proper ending, and not a weird, vapid, instantly deflated pseudo-resolution.
    There's nothing objectively wrong with playing something by the numbers. You'll just have to accept that you'll be boring because of it.

    This film was awful because it was seeing a lot of well crafted tension and atmosphere wasted on a completely shallow one dimensional point, not a plot really just a point, and characters that don't act like humans specifically to make that point. Over and over and over again. And then they explain it to you because they think you're a moron. Do not waste your time with this film. I'd also point out that although unpleasant the ending is really not anything uniquely horrifying or shocking, in no small part because of how predictable it is.
