2 years after posting this video, I only recently put the 'like' option on - as a way of paying respect to these beautiful artists. Thank you so much, Willy, thank you, Jack. And thanks to those who made this recording and to anyone who enjoys it - your comments are such positive vibes, thank you all. I just wanted to share this online - amazing footage, a real treasure.
Peace, love & good music to all, Cătălina (January 2013)
- This Is the Way You Make A Broken Heart (inspired by The Way We Make a Broken Heart, written by John Hiatt)
Just one more night, she'll have to spend another night without you.
Now you're guilty of the same romance that I am too.
You'll get used to telling lies, feeling sorry when she breaks down and cries,
Now that the string's been attached, she gonna catch on.
Yes, this is the way you make a broken heart
Now lesson number one you just begin to hurt her so
And lesson number two she'll beg for you when the lights are low,
Then come lesson number three when she gets down on her knees,
begs you to stop at the door just before she comes apart.
Yes, this is the way you make a broken heart
Now we laid a trail of tears for her to follow
And we thought of every lie that she might swallow
Lesson number four there'll be no more for her to bear
And on some dark night we'll dim the light on this affair.
Well, she'll find somebody new who will probably mistreat her too,
There must be millions just like you and me, practiced in the art,
Yes, this is the way we make a broken heart...
- Carmelita (written by Warren Zevon)
I hear Mariachi music on my radio and the tubes they glow in the dark,
I was with you in Ensenada, now I'm stuck here in Echo Park.
Now, Carmelita, hold me tighter, I believe I'm sinking down.
And I'm so strung out on heroin on the outskirts of town...
Well, I pawned my Smith & Wesson and I went to meet my man
Who hangs out on Alvarado Street by the Pioneer chicken stand.
Now, Carmelita, hold me tighter, I believe I'm sinking down
And I'm so strung out on heroin on the outskirts of town...
Well, I'm sittin' here, playing solitaire with my pearl-handled deck,
The county won't give me no more methadone and they cut off your welfare check
Now, Carmelita, hold me tighter, I believe I'm sinking down
And I'm so strung out on heroin on the outskirts of town...
Herrlich !😊
He's so sweet to Jack who suffered from terrible depression and would soon be gone. When they disagree about something in music history willy politely defers to jack and shows him respect. Music was their life and they were able to share that----I still can't believe Willy is gone and watch this over and over.
I’ve watched this about 100 times since finding it last week. Had always heard the names Mink and Willy DeVille, but never had really heard him until recently. Never too late to discover another too little heralded genius
Willy ,du wirst so sehr vermisst.
Willie's pure passion and talent. Beautiful and amazing. Thanks for this glimpse of his spirit. It makes everything else ok.
Yeah Willy looks good here. What a guy.
" Did you write that? "
" No but I love it."
Passion and love for the music.
Great post.
I saw Willy DeVille when I was 17 in a bar in S.F. He was so sharp with his tie and pink shirt
chewing gum and smoking. But when he started to sing I was enthralled. Here was a classic rock voice with an attitude like no other. I will never forget that show nor Willy DeVille. A Train Lady, Venus of Ave D, Bad Boy, In the Heat of the Moment, the list goes on.
Willy, Willy, Willy...
Musik für einen armen Menschen, einen Freund... Willy so liebenswert! Für mich seit Jahrzehnten ein bemerkenswerter Typ... Thank you for all - Willy!
Willy does not need any orchestra or background - he is fantastic and unrivaled !!
Willy looks just amazing in this, strong and healthy.
Magnificient as always...Willy DeVille..fantasitic voice ❤
Incredible footage - when a singer as great as Willy De Ville covers songs by the finest of songwriters John Hyatt and Warren Zevon, there's pure magic made and witnessed here
...
Holy Mother of god...I love so many musics, but just a few can touch me like deVille do. Thanks, thanks, thanks, thank you so much for share this little treasure.
Miquel Àngel Daniel

I've watched this a few times, see something new each time. I just noticed Willy has his cigarette tucked into the strings, upright and lit. Willy.
Me too...I just watch what production looks like in a natural setting.

« Rock’n’roll dies, but we’re still fighting - Yeah, like fools upon the hill with our fuckin swords and no enemy. »
Just love this. Love Willy RIP
GRAND!
Willy is great here, and I love seeing what a music lover Jack was. Thanks so much.
Two geniuses gone too soon. Thanks for sharing.
I agree...Most welcome.
You are so right.
This is great two epic men.........
Unvergesslich intensiv. Ruhe in Frieden lieber Willy.
i love this man
his songs just short out my 60s synapses like nobody else

This is so good it's scary. Thanks for sharing.
beauty at its best ...
Fabuloso. Willie was such a wonderful singer, and what to say of his taste for choosing what to cover.. Hiatt and Warren would be delighted. And Jack's is genuinely moved. Thanks!
Luis Aguirre Most welcome and thanks in return, well said!
Es ist unglaublich schön!
Willy had the same incredible and unmatched voice and charisma singing to an audience of one as he did singing to 1,000s in an audience. He never ceases to capture my heart.
Sagenhaft schön unvergleichlich, das macht keiner nach. Großartig ! SPITZE !❤

greattttttt
Willy you're in my heart....
I miss Willy, too
brilliant, one of the nicest moments for me in music with the other being Solomon Burke and Welch singing Valley of Tears
Check out SRV playing with his hero Albert King on "Texas Flood Jam." One of the greatest things ever recorded.
« Rock’n’roll dies, but we’re still fighting - Yeah, like fools upon the hill with our fuckin swords and no enemy. »
Terrific video! I hope that they are both now in Rock n' Roll Heaven like this. Thanks.

Oke i already was fan from Spanish Stroll and even more from Storybook Love
But i am more amazed that i am getting even a bigger fan after i learned from 'This is the way .... and Carmelita and More and more 6 years after Willy died
Thats why i am glad that there is RUclips !
And I wonder if there is Anybody out there that Likes 'Starman' endTheme from Jack Nitzsche as much as I .....

Werry God
fantastico
Prachtig. Lovely video thanks.........Moving to see Willy on a bed full of compassion, just the way he is ...was....
« Buvons un verre ici, après on verra bien. ». De l’aveu même des réalisateurs, « d’emblée, nous avons compris qu’un documentaire sur Willy DeVille, avec ce qu’il suppose de mise à distance, de réflexion sur la relation filmeur/filmé était quasiment impossible. Nous avions gagné un ami - et quel ami ! - mais perdu un film. »
Interesting how Willy changes Smith Corona (a typewriter) to Smith & Wesson ( a gun). This seems to have been filmed the year that Jack died.
so precious, thanks
Absolute Nr. 1..... Mikel Jachson Nr..............99
Nitzsche and his muse or vice versa...I imagine this is what Jack looked like when producing Graham Parker as per GP in his liner notes.
Unglaublich schön, GROßARTIG einmalig !❤
Qué deliciaaaa!! Pura pasión y talento 🤩🎸🎸🎶🎶
the pioneer chicken stand's on sunset. it's why JN says it's ❝the only false . . . .❞ ~ he knows. most of l.a.'s music scene knows. i know cos i used to go there with {reasonably famous boyfriend} when i was about thirteen, so he could meet warren zevon's man. or JN's. or maybe even WdV's during tropicana residencies. & such is our so very long lost life . . . .
proserpine Thank you for this, share more if you want, please! So interesting, I was always curious to know about that “false”; I thought it was about the way it sounded, something like “falsetto”
what a fucking gem!
boy boy amazing thank you...
Bravo!
Seinfeld is missing "the shirt". Who knew Jack Nitzsche pilfered it from wardrobe? Seriously- Nitzsche's talents and career are a rueful cautionary tale. Somebody knows what tormented him and I guess couldn't help.
