I love my 300TE Wagon. It's old but it's still really nice! It handles superbly in all road conditions. It's not an off-road vehicle. That's not it's purpose. I drive with confidence in my Mercedes.
No. Quattro is always working, unlike the original 4Matic system which is reactive. Quattro would "revert" to front drive in that case as well. The Audi rear axles and propershaft are generally not sized to take full engine power. The later 4Matic system is much simpler and only has an open differential in the transfer case.
@@compu85 so, does that mean that a 4matic from the early 90’s would be best? It definitely seems like its for different situations. Is 4matic more capable because of the centre and rear dif lock? More off road capabilities, where the quattro would be better for faster speeds and driving like a rally car? Could your drive 4matic the same way?
@@skanlines 4Matinc as shown in this video is probably the worst choice for long term reliability, and also for driving enjoyment. Audis in the 80s had locking center and rear differentials too, but because the center differential was always transferring power they had a more predictable feel. Parts availability for the 4Matic cars is very poor these days. I think the front suspension springs have been NLA for some time.
@@compu85 Thanks for the information. I have the opportunity to maybe purchase a 1987 300d, but it depends on how cheap I can get it for. I was wanting an Audi for winter driving and its good to know to stay away from 4matic.
How can the center +rear diff locks BE MADE AVAILABLE AT BUTTONS inside the cabin? The 2/4wd switch should be moved inside too. But with the system in mode 3 and one front wheel in air it's still only 2wd, so should invent a front locker too .G The speaker makes a big mistake telling mode 2 is 50-50 torque distribution. It's not, in fact is 0-100% depending on axle grip: if one front wheel is in air 100% of torque is on the rear. A slight amount at start is present overcoming the rot inertia
That 1st generation 4MATIC, which is a REactive system. The 2nd generation and beyond 4MATIC system is PROactive and much better. And saying an "Audi" cost less to run is pretty funny. I've owned countless European cars and Audi have the most problems with drive train and transmissions.

Cool video! Always liked the wagon.
Does Audi give you the option to turn quattro off and just be rear wheel drive? If not, being able to switch from 4 to rear wheel drive is king.

@@compu85 they are. Front ARB bushings are NLA aswell. And 2 years ago the front cv boot kit went from 50 euro to 250 euro.

Front diffs can never be locked or steering would be impossible
@Preston Newcomb Say that to the Geländewagen
thoes ml w163 has 4matic?
This guy sounds like the guy off one of the old crime investigation shows lol

Those w124 wagon 4-matic will cost too much in the future as a rare vintage Mercedes, price can reach 25 ooo Dollars in 2021
