This might be Janis Joplin's signature song here. It took a country outlaw and all-around hell-raiser like Kris Kristofferson to write it, though. This is one of the greatest match-ups of singer and songwriter ever. Kris Kristofferson's hard living gave him the insight to write Johnny Cash's "Sunday Morning Coming Down"(best hangover song EVER)as well as sexually-charged classic country songs like "Help Me Make it Through the Night." Janis was quite a rebel herself, and mixing those two together was great. I know that Kris wrote the song, but Janis was the one that owns it. Great reaction....but I'm shocked that you've never heard of this song before. It's just that much of a classic.

I love how she uses "la la la" to turn her voice into a lead instrument in the last verse leading into the final blow out. Janis Joplin guitar, Richard Bell piano, Ken Pearson organ, John Till lead guitar. PS. Paul A. Rothchild, best known as the recording studio producer of The Doors, produced this song. That might explain why some of the piano work during the blow out section evokes the sounds of Ray Manzarek from The Doors.

I’m sure she would want us to enjoy her music and to make the most of our lives. Don’t waste a minute of it. Life is way too short. Spread the music, the love and be kind to others.

Saw her at Winterland, with Big Brother and the Holding Company; Quicksilver Messenger Service; Jefferson Airplane; and The Grateful Dead, August '67. Not once did any of them stop a song to explain it to the audience. Between tunes..."I had a pair a Levi's and a couple a T-shirts and I figured I had my shit pretty well together, man". (Janis Joplin, introducing the next song). "But there was this chick that lived upstairs, and she always seemed to be so fine, nice clothes, smelled good, fancy hair. And I couldn't figure out what it was she had that I didn't have. So, one day I hid in the stairwell, and you know what I found out? This chick hit the streets at noon, man. I mean, I didn't even get up until three. So, I learned, what you gotta do, man, is try, just a little bit harder".

Stunning talent - and superbly showcased by an amazing group of outstanding musicians. Then only one I can think of today who had equally so much overflowng ability and soul, is the late Amy Winehouse. These sorts of genuis arrive from nowwhere, show us all what sheer talent is really all about and depart; perhaps their own vitality and need for expression - and having to deal with the atttendent adoration, is simply too much for them to cope with? Better to burn out - then fade away?

Kris Kristofferson was never her boyfriend. It was co-written by Kris and Fred Foster and was originally performed by Roger Miller. The song is the story of two drifters, the narrator and Bobby McGee. The couple hitch a ride from a truck driver and sing as they drive through the American South. They visit California and then part ways, with the song's narrator expressing sadness afterwards. Due to the singer's name never being mentioned and the name "Bobby" being gender neutral, the song has been recorded by both male and female singers with only minor differences in the lyrical content.

@@thegorn68 You might want to go listen to Kris Kristophersons interview about this song. He lived with Janis for about a MONTH (he said so) and in the mid-60s maybe 66 or 67, they would be freaky deakying, he as much as said so. This song was about an adventure, of course, real or made up who knows, but he asked a friend/partner what his Secretary's name was, and it was Bobbie McKee (a girl), so Kris got it wrong and wrote Bobby Mcgee, she said it was OK to use her name after she got a Divorce her husband used to tell everyone that song was about him and his wife, (LOL).
Janis recorded this son and was going to surprise him in early 1970, she of course died before the song was ever released. Seems Fred was the guy who had the Secretary.............SEE BELOW:
The suggestion for the title was a cordial challenge from producer and Monument Records founder Fred Foster to Kris. The titular character was named for a studio secretary, Barbara "Bobbie" McKee, but Kristofferson had misheard her surname. Kris explained that he was trying to convey the despair of the last scene of Frederico Fellini’s ‘’La Strada’’ where a broken, war-torn, inebriated Anthony Quinn stares up from the beach, at the night's stars
