A Ball & Chain was a device they used to put on prisoners to prevent escape (a heavy ball, attached to a chain around their ankle). The term is used to describe anything that holds you back or down, limits your freedom, is a severe hindrance. For some, it's addiction. For some it's their relationship. People jokingly refer to their spouse as a Ball & Chain ("the Old Ball & Chain nixed me going on the Boy's Trip to Vegas").
At that period in time it would not have been used to describe drug addiction, although, Joplin was heavily into hard drugs. It was almost exclusively used at that time to refer to a spouse or a very close girl friend.
@@jharback I'm of Janis' generation & while we didn't really didn't use the term much, except jokingly for a spouse/partner, my parents & grandparents used it more frequently & more broadly, including for addictions, oppressive jobs/bosses, "money pit" houses, etc. My father, born 1917, referred to cigarettes as his ball & chain.
I think ball and chain can apply to anything you’re tied to. BTW, Janice Joplin is referenced in the song American Pie as “the girl who sang the blues”
Love Janis! No one else has the energy she brings. I was hooked on her when I first heard her on the radio singing Mercedes Benz acapella. Bobby McGee a real classic!
As a kid I broke my mother's janis Joplin record of a live set. I was more upset than her and the whooping didn't come close to the fact I couldn't listen to Summertime again. To this day I can listen to Summertime and it will make everything feel better whatever is going on.
@@GreenBayPack I am grateful for all of Janis' live recordings on the internet. "Summertime" still makes me cry when Janis sings it. There will never another like her.
Love Janis, Me and Bobby McGee is another one of her songs. The Animals song was House of the Rising Sun. Check out Edgar Winter Group Frankenstein, should be a live version
Yes Janis did do a wonderful cover of the Me & Bobby McGee, but it is a Kris Kristofferson song. He did date her for a while but wrote the song years before he met her.
PS ball and chain is something that describes holding you down, holding you back. Could be a spouse/love, addiction etc. More literally, it could mean a chain gang/prisoner/sentence. In the context of 'House of the rising sun', it refers to gambling and alcohol. In 'Ball and Chain' it refers to a spouse/love. So I guess it depends on context.
A Ball and Chain is a chain attached to a convict's ankle with a heavy iron ball attached to the other end. Ih House of the Rising Sun, the father went to prison to "wear" that ball and chain , and now the son is set to follow him.
@@thatmanstu23 No mention of prison or jail in HOTRS and I think everyone is aware of what a ball and chain is... 'I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain' He's talking about drinking and gambling...

My daughter just had her 51st birthday!!it truly breaks my heart that Janis died before she knew how beloved she was and how legendary she would become.
Heh🤭 the distortion is intentional. It's the 60s and it's Janis Joplin. Psychedelic drugs and music achieved an altered mind trip. Ball and chain symbolizes being tied to a person, place or thing. Of course prisoners back in the day were literally shackled with a ball and chain to keep them from escaping when working outside the prison
My old-broad heart is doing the flutters.... 💜💜💜💜 Edit: Me And Bobby McGee (without question!), Mercedes Benz, Crybaby, Piece Of My Heart, Work Me Lord... I could go on forever!
This woman is "I met a girl who sang the blues and asked her for some happy news. She just smiled and turned away" from American Pie. Just my personal opinion....not at all the best song to show her vocals. She died from a Heroin overdose at the age of 27. One of the "27 club" Too many that died at that age it became a "Club" of sorts. Not on purpose....just happened to be.
Me and Bobby McGee Maybe move over, get it while you can, Summertime, kozmic Blues, Mercedes-Benz many many others react to Janis Joplin live on the Dick Cavett Show it won't be blocked
Need to do PIECE OF MY HEART and ME & BOBBY MEGEE by Janis Joplin ,R.I.P (27 club member) Note the lady in the audience is MAMA CASS from the MAMA & PAPAS that preformed at the same concert.,,,,,,
That's Cass Elliot of the Mammas and the Pappas in the audience, just experiencing the awe of Janice Joplin. Another crazy 1960's genre. : ) I guess you had to be there.
"Ball and chain" refers to an ancient form of shackles used on prisoners. It was literally a heavy iron ball, on a chain, attached to an iron ring around the prisoner's ankle. Obviously, it stopped the person from running, or walking much, either. They'd actually have to carry the ball to move around. By the time it became a figure of speech in these songs and general conversation, it referred to anything that held you back, kept you attached to something, and that sort of thing. So in The Animals song, "House of the Rising Sun," the reference is both to addiction and to going to jail. When the singer returns home to "wear that ball and chain," I believe they're talking about going home to take the fallout for things they did while addicted. In this song, "Love is like a ball and chain," because she is singing about being obsessively in love with a man who cheats on her. The heartbreak is crushing her, but she can't break away from him.
Fun Fact: This was actually a second take. This took place at the 1968 Newport Blues Festival. The camera malfunctioned during the first performance of the song, was said by many at the show that that first performance was even better.
Love this woman, this is the female version of joe Cocker for me!! and yes you need to listen to Summertime from this woman.....will change your world!!

A "ball and chain" is any burden. Could be a relationship, could be an addiction. In the song, I think it's her addiction to her love. Janis was the best blues/rock singer of her era.
The song by the Animals you are recalling is “House of the Rising Sun” which referred to an historical place in New Orleans, a house of ill repute that catered to men seeking prostitution, gambling, and drugs, and many a man lost his soul there, as the song stated, so did the singer. In this song, Janis is not singing about an historical place but an emotional place, where she’s feeling held back, by a lover. She never married, but she’s singing about a love relationship for sure. Janis was an unique blues singer, she was a charismatic performer and was recognized by her peers as a powerhouse on stage. Sadly, she died young of a heroin overdose and, by the way, was engaged at the time. Check out “Piece of My Heart”, it’s one of my favorites by Janis.
