  • What are my thoughts on the Retevis RT3S, or more correctly, what are my thoughts on the RT3S as a device to use with OpenGD77? Does this radio function as it should with open source firmware. Is it any good? How is the hardware quality?
    This radio was provided to me by Retevis free of charge in exchange for some videos about the RT3S and OpenGD77. I did not pay for this radio except for import fees and sales tax, but I was not paid to make this content either. All opinions are my own.

    This is an example what a good review is Thks! Look all around the radio and clip belt all details. Most others just show the front of the radios.

    I wonder why Retevis doesn't just ship the RT3S with OpenGD77 already installed? Maybe their color screen is a selling point for some hams? Personally I prefer the appearance of the screen in OpenGD77. White text on a black background looks classy and is easy to see.

    • @LB0FI
      @LB0FI  Год назад +2

      That would be nice if they did, but I would assume that having to use externaly developed firmware, especially one under a GPL License, would be legally cumbersome. These are just speculations from my side, and you would probably be better off asking Retevis :)

      It's probably more for legal reasons, as the OpenGD77 firmware supports colour screens if the radio is equipped with one eg., MD-UV380/390, RT3S (which are all the same radio internally).
      Colours can be set up either from the radio menu (Options > Screen Settings > Themes) or in the OpenGD77 CPS (Extras > Themes). If you're going to make changes to colours from the radio read the OpenGD77 manual first to make sure the changes are permanent, as normally changes made form the radio are only temporary.

      I like the stock screen. It’s alright but I’m with you on the Opengd77 screen. I think it looks a lot better.

    Thanks for the great video! I have the TYT MDUV380 version of this radio, exactly the same hardware. Just installed the OpenGD77 firmware and it also enables the 1.25 meter (222-225 mHz) band which we have in US even when "band limits" is on, so this is now a tri-band DMR radio! However, be sure to check SWR on 1.25 meter band as the stock antenna is not designed for it. This firmware is way better than what was originally on the radio.

    Hello Morten!
    Do you think that with OpenGD77, Retevis RT 3S saves the battery more? Approximately as a percentage, your estimate. Good luck to you

      Regarding bands/modes, I don't know yet. (I have been out of the hobby for 10 years, and my TH75A tx doesn't work any more.)
      I would like maximum emergency preparedness capabilities. The satellite mode sounds interesting.

      @@mrtechie6810 I really like this radio, but only with the OpenGD77 firmware. As of recommending it to you, that is a bit harder since I don’t know your preferences. You have to prepare for a bit of work to get OpenGD77 loaded, but then it is a good radio. It is not the path of least resistance though.
