How to SET UP the IC-705 for WIRELESS DIGIMODES
Thanks for the video. I am also a fan of the mkiig I have two of them. I’ve been wanting to set one up as a dedicated digital mode.
How do you plug your paddles into your computer for CW with a Flex radio? CW is my favorite mode.
Did you check receive noise level using the power bank Vs a LifePO4 battery? Considering the power bank battery is 5v so there has to be a voltage inverter in the box and sometimes they put out a lot of hash on HF. A good one doesn't but you don't know what you get when you buy the power bank. 73 Ed
Thank you for your insights and your top 5!!! Very helpful!!! Happy New Year and 73!
There is an easy way to check the frequency accuracy of the radio without the need for an accurate counter. Tune the radio to 15.000 MHz WWV (NIST in Ft Collins, Colorado) In VFO A, set the frequency at 15.00030 LSB. In VFO B, set the frequency at 14.99970 MHz USB. Now toggle between VFO A and B and listen for a tone difference. If the radio is on frequency, both tones should sound the same (being 300Hz). If there is an error, the tones will sound different. You can then adjust the TCXO to make the tones sound the same. You need to NOT be completely tone deaf of course, but most people can hear a tone difference when the tone are more than 1 Hz apart. Tone difference of "X" Hz in this method means the radio error is X/2 Hz, half the tone difference. If the TCXO module has an accuracy of 0.5 PPM, an error of plus or minus 7.5 Hz would still be within spec at 15 MHz. This would result in a tone difference of 15 Hz between USB and LSB, which is easy to hear. So if you manage to set the tones equal (meaning one Hz difference between them), the radio error would be 0.5 Hz (at 15 MHz). That actually translates to a frequency error of 0.033 PPM, which is what you would have set the radio accuracy for if you manage to make the two tones equal! Important: This method ONLY works with radios where all internal frequencies are derived from a single master oscillator. If you have an older radio where the USB and LSB carrier frequencies are derived from a stand-alone crystal, this method won't work, as there will be independent errors on the SSB carrier frequencies for such radios.
Great review Morten. Love the items you picked. I have heard a lot about the Flex Radio. Thank YOu
Very nice list, i need a digi-rig for my older rigs. Especially my older field rigs. But for me my must have is portable power and emergency power. This is what my friends and i are working on improving. 73 ! Happy new year ! de N3TGY
Hi Morten do you have a video on that green pack you’re carrying in your large pack? I’m building my field repair kit and I’m starting with that bag and thought you might have some input.
I'm impressed with your choice of the 706. I'm starting to think about a second HF radio and am not sure I want to put $1000 into a "latest and greatest" model.
Thanks for this review. Santa has been generous to me and brought me one of these. I can't wait until weather conditions here get a bit more suitable to portable ham radio. Temps are down to -3C now with freezing fog, not nice for that. It certainly looks of good quality. As you have noticed, I probably wouldn't try using this antenna in 40m configuration with the rod extender when it's windy, though. I intend to split the wires of the grey flat 16-wire ribbon cables to obtain a good set of ground radials. Maybe not wire by wire, but let's say in sets of 4 wires. This would give a good set of 4 x 4 x 5m = 80m of ground radials. Happy New Year to you and your viewers, Morten.
Not sure I agree with your list, but for your usage it sounds perfect for you. It's nice that you could share your ideas. Thank you
Nice List Morten 😊.. Happy New Year!
Thank you Dave! Happy New Year!
You called a 706MKIIG and G106 gadgets? Hmmmm... And then the 6700! I guess the definition is different in their country.
Gadget, thingamjik, dingus and so on.
Something I have been laughing about for years: if you have an Icom 706 Mk.II G, It is impossible to just say you have an Icom 706. You HAVE to say Mk.II G. Even if you are sending CW with a straight key and manually pounding out each letter slowly you absolutely HAVE to say Mk.II G. It's just something I find unusual or weird and everytime I hear it I chuckle. Nothing wrong with it obviously, it is just strange to me. At one time, this was a radio that nearly everybody owned so you would work hundreds of them. It was definitely the most popular radio of it's day. Another good video, keep up the good work.
I can explain that. The 706, the Mk2 and the Mk2g are similar, but not identical. The two first ones had their flaws, mostly in the cooling part.
Loved my MkIIg but I sold it for an IC-7000, still have it, but heat was a constant problem so I did the fan mod, lost 3 DSP boards until I did. Now they are hard to find.
At the time I had a running gag with my ham friends, no matter what we were talking about, I would add, Mk.II G. I drive a Ford F-250 Mk.II G. I have a iPhone 50 Mk.II G......
No one can deny it is an iconic radio.
Not me, I have a 1st generation IC-706! 🤣
Morten, I would love to hear your TOP 5 list for your ancillary gear that lets you get out in the field. Examples might be things like warm clothes, cross-country skis, etc. DE WA1KLI
Kjetil LB4FH would probably be the right hamtuber for that. I like to stay in a warm car during winter and activate drive-ins. And the last time I had skis on was in March 1997... Thanks for the input though. And, thinking about it, I might have one of those videos already.
@@LB0FI As long as you remember: Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær! (There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing). My excuse is that I am old (72). The last time I was serious about cross-country skiing was when I was on the team in high school. I also prefer not to freeze. While I greatly respect Jan Baalsrud, I would never want to endure the extreme winter conditions he survived!
Solid list. 👍🏼👍🏼Stan AI5SS

Hi Morten, A big “Thank you!” for your videos in 2024, which I’ve enjoyed a lot! I’ve been licensed since 1999, have been mostly “radio silent” for quite some time since then, and have refreshed my love for ham radio in the last two years. Besides dusting off my old rigs, some new equipment entered the shack, quite similar to some of your additions in 2024: I’ve got a DigiRig to connect to my Elecraft K2 and it works flawlessly. And I’ve got into SDR with a Hermes-Lite 2, which works like a charm, although it is most probably a less polished rig than your FlexRadio. As my Norwegian language skills are far worse than my Swedish ones, I had to resort to Google Translate: Alt godt til deg og din familie og et godt nytt år! Vy 73 Arnd DJ9PZ/AB2QP
Thanks! The Hermes is absolutely on my try at some point list, but it will probably have to wait for some time. Although this channel creates a little bit of income it’s still far from breaking even, so I need to cut down on the purchases that aren’t sponsored for some time. Thanks for watching! Happy new year!
Great looking shack Morten! Good list- I have an Icom 706MK2G also- great radio for POTA. Thanks for the tip on the DigiRig for it. I'm looking at a Hermes Lite 2 for an SDR Transceiver- a Flex Radio would be nice, but way to expensive for my budget. 73 God Jul og Godt Nytt år!
@@ThinkPadModsandRebuilds-W4VHZ Thanks! I had no ambitions of getting a Flex, but it showed up at the right time at the right price.
Wow, that looks great, you must have upgraded your camera gear!

I would still say that this is a better radio for your money than one of those.
i Just watched like 5 of your videos. So far this is my favorite.
No antenna tuner?
Not with a resonnant antenna.
Great video. Can you detail voltage display cable?
I can do even better. If you go to LB5JJ Bob’s channel he has a full build of that one.
Having a multi-voltage trigger cable is terrifying. Dip switch or button away from frying a radio. But fixed voltage trigger cables are great. Thank you for this video.
@@Aimsport-video These switches needs a pointy tool and a good bit of force to move, so no danger here.

@@bobbyt3451 I am, and it’s my favorite portable radio.
@@LB0FI thinking about getting one but its an old radio
Is there a reason not to use 12V PD-trigger cable? No USB-C PD board needed, so soldering. Works for me with the IC-705.
No, no reason at all except using what's easily available.
@@stefan2907 The two problems I had with ready-made trigger-cables was first of all the fact that they used very thin cables. Secondly, I was unable to find one with a 5.5x2.5mm barrel connector (not that I looked very hard).
@@LB5JJ Thin cables might be the reason why the KX2 will not transmit at 10W when powered by a ready-made trigger-cable. I'll try your approach as well and see what happens. With the IC-705 10W are not a problem.
Very informative thanks. Yes, I have been using Powerbanks with my X-6100 and IC-605 for nearly 12 months now. I didn't make up a power delivery cable but bought one off Amazon. And yes, on my recent trip to Adelaide I took the X-6100 and power bank onto the plane as carry on luggage and didn't even get a second look from security. It definitely makes things a lot simpler and convenient. Cheers Phil ZL3CC
It's absolutely more convenient Phil. Looking forward to testing this out more.
This American thinks you pronounced Edinburgh correctly. 🤷♂️
I would have prefered to get that feedback from a Scot, but thanks Lee :)
USB C PD is definatle a great option. i have an FX-4CR coming and hope to use it for that. Thanks for the video's Mort! 73
Oh, I am a bit envious of that radio. But I am sure it will work with that as long as you get a powerbank that can deliver enough current.
Thanks for the plug, and a really nice video; good to get the word out on the advantages (and potential disadvantages) of using USB-PD for QRP radio!
Thanks for the gifts!
Welcome to the club. Airport security is the reason why I use for almost 2 years PD Powerbanks for my qrp rigs. Especially with carry on luggage only, it avoid unnecessary discussions. 73 de DG1JAN
Thanks! I am certain that this combo is a winner!
kinda too bad that background music had to play during the startup and shutdown.
Well, just the pure noise of the environment there does not make for a pleasant video experience.
Can one see the LED in bright sunlight?
That is a very good question. As far as I remember the LED is bright, but I have sold this tuner, so I have no way of checking this.
I do everything via a browser with shortcuts . Tried Hamcock, seems to do most things. Yet to use it seriously. It's another screen in my way HI at the moment. Thanks for info.
Thank you for creating this content. I have 73 Linux downloaded and I keep getting error messages surrounding CAT Controls. When do you believe the subsequent parts will be created? Thank you for your time and response! Bill, KC3RMV
Hi Bill! To be honest, part 2 is long overdue, but I am always short on time and have too many projects. It is still on the books, and hopefully I can have a video for you within a reasonable time.
I wondered about this unit. Thanks for digging into it. 73
Thank you! It's a good tuner.
Thanks for such a fair review. I own this radio and the DE19 and love the setup. I also make many SSB contacts on my G106. For the money, I have no complaints. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks for your feedback. I did not expect this to be my new favorite rig, but it is :)
My dad actually made HAMRS. Its really cool to see people love it.
Give your dad a huge thanks from the ham community!
@@LB0FI Will do!
Thanks, Morton. I've been eying this radio for months as a possible back-up HF radio especially for emergency communications use due to its low power consumption. If it only had a headphone/external speaker jack I could add an inline audio DSP unit to help me hear stations over the high 40m noise floor here which band is for some reason used by the PARA national emergency traffic net. But I really like the appearance of the radio with its big silver VFO knob and curved sides.
It is a great little rig. And there is a headphone jack, but it is on the microphone. There will be a Winlink tutorial for this radio coming out soon.
