@@tamlandipper29the issue is that having 24 hour news channels leads to two problems. 1. Keep in mind, in WW2 dismissing generals was common and you basically had 6 weeks to succeed, get killed, or be dismissed and the higher ups were not bothered by any of those outcomes. Key here though was that dismissal was rarely career-ender outside of well deserved cases.
I have really been loving how the Situation Room can break down many important events into a more digestible form factor. But it would also be great to see it uploaded as a podcast as well, like 'Decoding the Unknown'.
What a great way to start my morning/commute!! Thank you Simon and team for your content. Love the dedication to research and passion with current events!
Thank you for doing these. I have very severe cptsd & can’t watch any normal form of news or current affairs media bcos of it. I love simons vids + warographics so wanted to give these a go too. So yeah, this is just a thank you from a random young person who’s very grateful for you allowing her to be engaged in current affairs again for the first time in years without risking mental stability. Activating conscription can be a pretty bad idea. People who wouldn’t wanna fight being forced to do so, might as well choose to hide in the mountains and join the rebels.
The backing track in this video around the 30 minute mark sounds super eerily close to Ion Storm from the Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun OST, and now I genuinely want to know if you all used it in any capacity 🤔 Anyway, very informative and well done reporting as always, thank you!

I've heard parallels drawn between Syrskyi and Zaluzhny and American Civil War generals Grant and McClellan. McClellan was cautious, and keen to keep his troops as intact as possible while Grant was aggressive and did earn himself a butcher nickname for constantly pushing his troops into the fight. However, it was Grant that won the war, pushing into the South and forcing a surrender at Appomattox.
The biggest issue with that is in the brutal calculus of war, the Union could afford to expend lives thanks to its larger population. Ukraine can’t really afford to take heavier losses than Russia.
Much like many other comments, I really appreciate your up-to-date information, historical context, and efforts to keep things impartial (I understand this can never really happen, but I appreciate the effort!). Good work folks!
I think an overlooked part of the western aid end is that the west is not currently capable of producing artillery shells fast enough to replace the ones Ukraine uses. Defense contractors in the US have long stopped mass producing artillery shells since the military here scaled back on artillery doctrine. Artillery shells yield no profit for the western contractors, so they are not equipped to make them. So money isn't the only issue, and adding more money won't solve them all. You can't turn paper into artillery shells. It would require a complete retooling of weapon production lines, which would take at least 6 months to a year. There are simply no artillery shells to be had, and no one is making them.
You are right but there are still some different types of shells and weapons we can supply them with. Doesn’t have to be those specific ones that we don’t produce
@@khlaps Yes and no. The Ukraine is almost exclusively using NATO 155mm shells. That's what all of their artillery batteries are equipped for. We can supply them with other shells, but we'd also have to supply the batteries, which in turn would require training for them to operate. And it circles back around to the same problem. We'd be giving them limited numbers of it, so they'll just run out again. The problem is the US almost entirely abandoned artillery for air power, because we've never had to fight an opponent with adequate air defenses.

Even though replacing Zaluzhny with Srysky may cause people to worry, leadership changes are normal and sometimes required in warfare. The best analogy I can come up with is building a house; Zaluzhny poured the foundation, but now you need Srysky that can frame it. Only time will tell how well Srysky manages his command of the AFU, but if the retreat from Avdiivka is any indication, he will do well considering how much treasure and blood Russia had to commit for a small gain.
Your last sentence is assuming Ukraine is inflicting way more casualties than they are suffering, which is unlikely because of Russia's massive firepower superiority and Ukrainian ammo and manpower shortages. If anything, the defeat at avdiivka just paints a grim picture for whats to come, Ukraine can't hold on

And before you reply with "Nu uh". That seems to be the Russian tactic for the moment, let manpower inside the cauldron but they do not try to close the lid, just inflict as much damage as they can when the enemy finally has to retreat from there.
One of the interesting things too is one of the reasons the USA stopped conscripting its troops after Vietnam is because they found its better to have a 1000 troops fully loyal to the cause then to have 2000 troops who were forced to be there. (massive oversimplification I know but still true)
Yep, especially the Navalny thing yesterday! Laying out what lead to this, being respectful while also talking about problems on his side, and generally not sugarcoating stuff as much (if at all) like the press. We need more of those independent people who take a reasonable approach to this, I'm tired of propaganda channels and people who overstate their (almost never) perfect neutrality

In Myanmar I'm willing to bet that once the hunta falls all the various factions will start fighting each other for control of the country.Once the common enemy is gone they will most likely be at each other's throats. That's the way it usually works.
The different cultural militias all co-operating against the Junta army is actually really promising for the future national unity government, if they manage to succeed, it's a unifying conflict that pretty much everyone in the country can get behind and have a stake in making sure the outcome is positive, so the conflict wasn't wasted.

Saying he got fired is over the top. They're rotating leaders which is quite common to try and break the stagnation on the front line. Syrsky was at Bahkmut on the ground until it fell. Hes got eyes and hands on experience with the front line.
So he lost his position and somehow isn’t fired from his position? I mean I don’t think anyone thinks the general is no longer in the military. But anyone who has military experience would refer to any leadership being relieved of their position or being reassigned as having been “fired” from that position.
@@mrbushi1062 That was less his fault and more the fault if them not having effective air support since no one would give them enough to actually field it.
@cosmicthespider7974 the previous general is still serving as ground commander. So no he didn't get fired. Just relieved of his position. He's still actively serving.

You didn’t seem to mention who China is supporting in the Myanmar situation. This is extremely important to understand what is actually going on. Why didn’t you mention this?
Well, ya know the world is an interesting place where it's difficult to know who to trust.....I've basically decided not to take any side but my own at this point
At the moment China seems to be happy watching and waiting The first thing the rebels did when they took over the Casino and smuggling town on the border ( can't remember the name) was to round up the Chinese gangs that were running Scam Centres, targeting people in China, and handed them over to Chinese authorities. The Myanmar military has been in collusion with these gangs for years allowing them to operate freely. This was a really smart move by the rebels and seems to have bought them some goodwill.
@@naebodyknows7016 I wonder of China is pulling a USA, funding both sides that will eventually ends in ethnic groups fueding over what remains, like Libya. Idk if USA should be scared or Proud how much other countries, including China, copied their tactics.
@@ParaplegicKeanuReevesThe issue on the global stage with that mentality is that there are usually far more people who are "them" than "us." Only trusting your own crowd and not going out to find more allies usually results in your enemies outnumbering you
I think you outlined it well. Zhaluzhny was a good general and did a lot to help save Ukraine, but I do wonder if in the counteroffensive it was too risk-averse. He treated his forces like family, and didn't want to put them in danger. And I wonder if this limited success. Syrsky treats his forces like a sports team. He may not be the best loved person on the team, but he goes for the goal and pushes the forces to do more. I think if we are going to retake Crimea and win the war on our terms, we're going to have to push ourselves to do more. It'll be riskier, but it will end the war more quickly, saving more Ukrainian lives, and potentially, more NATO lives.
Dude, risk-averse? They got fucking slaughtered in the counter-offensive. Zaluzhny got removed to save face for losing Avdiivka, i.e., they are using Syrsky as a fall guy. He's got family in Russia and when the time comes, he will be labelled as a Russian agent and taken out or replaced. Your counter-offensives are finished and Ukraine is taking on a purely defensive role at this point. Also, retaking Crimea? You just lost your most fortified stronghold in the south and Russia shows no signs of stopping. What is it with Ukrainians and their delusions of grandeur. You'd be lucky to keep Odessa and Kharkov after all of this is finished.
Ukraine unfortunately is trying to contend with two things that don't go hand in hand. Prevent loss of life of troops, and regain terrority. Russia doesn't care about their troops, which is one explanation for their progress (albeit small).
The way Ukraine operated in 2022 sounded a lot like Prussian doctrine of autonomous offensives which did worked in the chaos of sudden invasion, but not so much for combined-arms offensives where a central command much choose wisely instead of making a meat grinder
This is my your best episodes you had made, maybe others are much better, i preferred these video and enjoyable too much, impressed alot, thank you very much Simon.
It is more of a demotion of position but not rank. He is still an important figure in the leadership of the military. He is well respected, well informed, and skilled but failed to meet objectives, regardless of whether that was his fault or not it was his responsibility.
After meat waves being threw at them and along with Russia's best equipped soldiers for months. Crazy how they've been able to hold onto that town for so long considering how close it is to Donetsk.
@@dannyboi4111 they took a lot of Russian's out as a bonus. But the description of how Russia finally broke into Avdiivka was harrowing. They would send small groups into houses across the grey zone during the night, bulding up forces - and eventually just sent a huge meat wave right at the Ukrainians. In some parts they were less they were less than a hundred meters away from Ukrainian positions.
also needed to mention the brilliant strategic move Russians made in Avdiivka. For months they made it seem like they will surround it and push from sides, and suddenly they cut straight through the middle, even Ukrainians did not fully expect that. It was a gamble, but I think perfectly prepared gamble and it paid off.

Thank you for drawing attention to the situation in Myanmar. A little help on the pronunciation of the name of the country, where I lived for several years. Myanmar is two syllables: myan-mah. The "y" is a consonant, so it starts like the word music. The "an" is close to the name, Ann. The Brits put the "r" at the end to elongate the "a", so the second syllable is pronounced "mah". You could say "yanmah" and then add an "M" at the beginning.
I'm part Guyanese part Trinidadian (British born) and there are definitely parallels between the discovery of oil in both countries and the sudden international attention, though I do realise the context and fine details are very different. In Trini, it resulted in a coup and subsequent foreign military intervention in the early 90's. Essentially from what I've learned and what my family has told me, Trinidad succumbed to corruption and inequality after the discovery of oil. Now it is a hotspot for trafficking and the cartels have lots of influence with government and law enforcement. I really hope the same doesn't happen with Guayana.

I'm not sure he could write it all too, even if he had a freaking time machine!
This is probably the single best news source that is this easily accessible and digestible
Great work, Simon
Keep in mind, in WW2 dismissing generals was common and you basically had 6 weeks to succeed, get killed, or be dismissed and the higher ups were not bothered by any of those outcomes. Key here though was that dismissal was rarely career-ender outside of well deserved cases.
I have really been loving how the Situation Room can break down many important events into a more digestible form factor. But it would also be great to see it uploaded as a podcast as well, like 'Decoding the Unknown'.
Agreed
What a great way to start my morning/commute!! Thank you Simon and team for your content. Love the dedication to research and passion with current events!
Haha same! I just clocked in a few minutes ago mate.
Thank you for doing these. I have very severe cptsd & can’t watch any normal form of news or current affairs media bcos of it. I love simons vids + warographics so wanted to give these a go too. And I can happily say a few months in that these don’t trigger me at all. And I appreciate the fact you cover global news rather than just local European conflicts. Aswell as the fact i can trust you to be unbiased/honest, meaning Ik what I’m taking in is as good a truth as is available to the public. So yeah, this is just a thank you from a random young person who’s very grateful for you allowing her to be engaged in current affairs again for the first time in years without risking mental stability. All my respect ❤️

Thank you so much for covering Myanmar (Burma) when so many other Western news outlets have little to no coverage.
Activating conscription can be a pretty bad idea. People who wouldn’t wanna fight being forced to do so, might as well choose to hide in the mountains and join the rebels.
Thanks to everyone responsible for this channel. Its refreshing to get clear information and not a bias opinion. Thank you.
The backing track in this video around the 30 minute mark sounds super eerily close to Ion Storm from the Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun OST, and now I genuinely want to know if you all used it in any capacity 🤔
Anyway, very informative and well done reporting as always, thank you!
Dude I know you don’t read your comments ever, but to your editors and writers. I’m a long time fan of every Simon channel since the beginning. Keep it up, it’s amazing, ethical, unbiased content we all deserve. Thank you 🤘🏻

This is true, but we’ll have to see how it goes this time around.
The biggest issue with that is in the brutal calculus of war, the Union could afford to expend lives thanks to its larger population. Ukraine can’t really afford to take heavier losses than Russia.
Thank you for bringing in news about Myanmar to your channel
Thank you for all your work, we apreciate you bro
My father is from Myanmar, such a tragic bloody situation it still is today..
Keep up your great work Simon and team! ❤

Hey Simon. Rocking beard. That is all. Good video.
Yes, I’ve heard that analogy and I think it’s a good one
Your last sentence is assuming Ukraine is inflicting way more casualties than they are suffering, which is unlikely because of Russia's massive firepower superiority and Ukrainian ammo and manpower shortages. If anything, the defeat at avdiivka just paints a grim picture for whats to come, Ukraine can't hold on
I thought the libtards/democrats/socialists/marxists and their Globalist Warmongering Elites thought the War was going well, and that Ukraine would win. Everything I have read and watched the last few years has shown The Left and our corrupt "Leaders" as nothing more than lies and propaganda to profit, control, divide, and cause more War. the biden/obama/WEF regime should be held accountable for starting all of this. Anyone that still thinks Putin is the only one responsible, needs a reality check and needs to grow up. I remember reading back before the war started, so many democrats/leftoids were like "Russian wouldn't dare invade", despite all the logistics and supplies being moved to the border, and drone footage high above showing a massive mobilization. It was just deemed "training exercises and intimidation tactics". Do NOT trust Western Propaganda paid for and spewed by Big Tech and Evil Elites.
If anyone lost lots of blood there, it was ukraine. They hold on to stronghold cities like germany did, pouring manpower into cauldrons.
(massive oversimplification I know but still true)
i always love the non biased coverage you and your team provide. great video as always simon!

Whoa, 3 minutes ago. I never catch these this fast
Not to mention he failed the spring offensive. Ignoring the advice of the West to focus one front not the whole thing
@@mrbushi1062 That was less his fault and more the fault if them not having effective air support since no one would give them enough to actually field it.
Arguing semantics
@cosmicthespider7974 the previous general is still serving as ground commander. So no he didn't get fired. Just relieved of his position. He's still actively serving.

What a good series, great reporting.
Or it ends in disaster since it's hard to hide large concentrations of men and equipment.
I love how this guy is extremely thorough

Ukraine unfortunately is trying to contend with two things that don't go hand in hand. Prevent loss of life of troops, and regain terrority. Russia doesn't care about their troops, which is one explanation for their progress (albeit small).
The way Ukraine operated in 2022 sounded a lot like Prussian doctrine of autonomous offensives which did worked in the chaos of sudden invasion, but not so much for combined-arms offensives where a central command much choose wisely instead of making a meat grinder

General Zaluzhnyi wasn’t fired, he was reassigned and replaced. He will still have important contributions to the Ukrainian military going forward.
It is more of a demotion of position but not rank. He is still an important figure in the leadership of the military. He is well respected, well informed, and skilled but failed to meet objectives, regardless of whether that was his fault or not it was his responsibility.
Well, they already pulled out of Avdiivka. A good move considering they were outnumbered 7 to 1 there.

Essentially from what I've learned and what my family has told me, Trinidad succumbed to corruption and inequality after the discovery of oil.
