  • Great footage of Shockwave at Six Flags Great America with the brakes on very light in the late 80's.
Special Thanks to Tim Baldwin for recording this amazing footage in the late 80's.
My footage starts at the 6 min mark and is from 1998.

I rode this coaster as a teenager. I only rode it once. The ride was extremely rough, I had a terrible headache the rest of the day. But just looking at it from the ground the coaster was an impressive sight to behold.

They really should’ve kept this coaster for a bit longer, perhaps until around the late 2000’s. That Superman flying coaster could’ve just waited a bit longer TBH.

Man, I see this video and think to myself "Wow, I wish Viper ran like this!"... and then I remember that much of the reason Viper is still in existence today probably stems from the fact that it's been running with the brakes turned up to 11 since the mid 90s LOL... these old Arrows weren't designed to last being ran so fast! But I do wish that I could experience the insanity just once!

Ahh, the memories of Shockwave. I loved it so much that I wrote an essay in my English Composition class about it - my teacher liked how I described going through the first loop.

I went on a class trip in 93" avoided this ride because it was so ominous to me returned in 02' it was my first ride what a rush it's everything they said it would be !!

  • @TexKP

It had a couple rough transitions and uncomfortable restraints, but the ride was iconic. It took the first few loops at lightning speed and the swooping first drop stood like a monument by the front gate. Replacing a pure adrenaline machine like this with an uninspired flying coaster was a crime.

My childhood. I thought this coaster was the biggest thing ever and had to wait years to meet the height requirement. Nostalgia 🥰🥰🥰

This one was rough from the year it opened in 1988 until it was taken down in late 2002 for Superman: Ultimate Flight's debut the next season... Worst part was right after the third loop when it righted itself up the small uphill turn before the run towards the boomerang...

Hey! I heard that Shockwave had several issues during its lifetime. Not only did it have problems with the wheels, but it was also widely criticized for being a rough and painful ride. The turn after the third loop became the most infamous part of the ride. Also, passengers had to remove their earrings before boarding the train.

    • @juangrimaldo8178

My firends dad operated shocke wave and he never told us story's of removing earings

Kennywood Park had similar issues with the Steel Phantom. Too many riders experienced a painful ride. The Steel Phantom was re-worked without loops into the Phantom's Revenge which has earned high marks from coaster enthusiasts.

I remember Shockwave for being especially painful- the one and only time I rode it as a teen, I got severe whiplash. I never went on it again and I was really pleased to see it removed.

It was the era of nylon shorts. Also, a time when you paid for things with currency & coins. Before boarding, look under the seat cushions (held on only with velcro). Usually a few quarters could be found!.....................We said the ride paid dividends!
