I was “annoyed” about the lack of bases for the landmarks for approximately 30 seconds after I read the rules, and then I understood how they worked and have had no problems. If the game had come with bases, there would have been complaints about them. Guarantee it.
I like it too - it’s a bit lucky, but it’s game that is satisfying to play and it’s fun. It just gives you stuff! Every turn you get stuff, and it looks great, it’s tactile and fun decisions. I will probably like this expansion - good review Mike
I really like Tapestry, but we houseruled three aspects: - whenever taking a new Tapestry, draw 2, pick one, discard other. Too much randomness for so few so importand and variable cards. With this expansion this rule definitely and absolutely stays in (even more cards in deck) - whenever taking a new Civ, draw 2, pick one, discard other. Especially in last generation, getting something like "Chosen" with "insta losing -15 VP" errata rule without option is definitely a NO. Definitely stays here, too - Trap cards can counter Trap cards. This seems to be adressed here a lot with other type cards, but rule will stay, too. Traps are basically useless, especially in 2p games when both sides has at least one and precious fights would simply mean "let your token be toppled and give enemy 1 resource and inconquerable territory". Based on how few fights occur in Tapestry games, this rules stay. For each Trap played you, of course, take one resource as stated. What do you think? Good choices, bad choices? No need for them or good ideas?
cool house-rule ideas! One note: i wouldn't think thatt you apply the errata rules for civs you get midd game or is that stated somewhere? Feels kinda odd to say the very least
@@sankuru7550 civs gained midgane do not bring any resources nor points in the moment of earning them. But houserule still works the way you can choose between two randomly drawn instead forcefully draw one (big luck involved)
I was really hoping for some new capital cities and while I think the landmark base "issue" was way overplayed by some, I was surprised they didn't include optional snap-on bases in the expansion (although you get get them pretty easily online from other sources). Otherwise more stuff for a game you already like is kind of a no-brainer.
Don't capital cities determine where you start? The starting spots are limited. I would think that would mean there were be starting locations that would end up with multiple capitol cities. Which could mean that there would be players with the same starting location. So there would then need a rule to deal with two players with the same starting location.
Thanks, seems like the randomness may be worse than in the base game given the power of some of those Tapestry cards. One question please, do you get errata’d cards for the changes to the civilizations from the base game?
The rebalances are on the back of the new rulebook but no new civilization cards. Jamie Stegmaier's logic was that there's a very small chance they will be further balanced in the future, although he doesn't expect that'll happen.
Doesn't look like it added anything that will change my opinion. As you mentioned, more of the same. It was ok at first but the randomness of the Tapestry cards brought it down. I enjoy games that deal with uncertainties and setbacks but trying to come back when someone has a great combo of tapestry cards wasn't enjoyable. Regardless of house rules and such I guess my feelings were already set in stone so traded it away.
I am a supporter of Stonemaier Games and I am more forgiving than many for their marketing choices. However, I am disappointed with the fact that they have not announced a price for this expansion with a pre-order date of Sept. 2 only a few days away. Mike, you characterized it as a "small" expansion, but with those minis I do not expect this expansion to be a low cost addition.
All the game is themeless. It is not a civilisation game, it is a game you add random acts from history to your fictitous civilisation. Those are simply new random buildings.
I think it was a mistake to add buildings into this expansion. It could just have had civilization and tapestry cards which would have added about as much for way less cost. The base game was expensive enough I’m not buying an expensive expansion that doesn’t change the game, just adds more.
I'm not sure if Jamey cared about the feedback players have provided since release of this game. Some of the things people are house ruling make the game much better and it would have been worth adding those as variants to the game. Also the conquer action needs an overhaul but it looks like SG is past caring about any of this. No one asked for more of the same really...or let me rephrase that...the vocal community didn't. The base game has great variability as is.
It is nice to have a mind reader in our midst, who can read the mind of the designer, and know whether or not he “cared about the feedback.” It sounds like you don’t like the game and don’t like the expansion. Seems ridiculous to go after the designer’s integrity.
The main house rules we add is that you draw some more tapestry cards at the start of the game to choose from and that you draw 2 or 3 civilizations if you gain them midgame and then choose one. So basically more choice and less random draws.

Any plans for a solo review? I'm curious how the scenarios play.
I'm (Mike) definitely keeping it in mind.
Same, they seem very fascinating
It is my understanding that the new landmarks do fill up the spaces, did you check them to make sure they didn't?

I didn't think about that, but new capital cities would have been nice. Probably will be in a future expansion.

@@XShrike0 Yes, but you could assign the same numbers and just say you can have only 1 of each number in the setup.
@10:49 on the Advisors tile: "instead of them drawing a from the deck". 🤦
Cool! I really like Tapestry and am happy to sprinkle in more stuff.

Great game.
Is the alien civ analogous to islanders?
Looks good, we're looking forward to playing!
Thanks for the review, Mike!
Meeple Realty sells bases for the sculpts that fix the mentioned problem.
Great review Mike, I was on the fence but I pulled the trigger :)
Greetings from Italy, nice video buddy
Love the Surprise Party artwork.
my stupid problem is i wish the expansion fit in the base box with that nice insert.
This looks so good.
Did they not include cards to implement the rebalancing?
The rebalances are on the back of the new rulebook but no new civilization cards. Jamie Stegmaier's logic was that there's a very small chance they will be further balanced in the future, although he doesn't expect that'll happen.
Is sad that they landmarks still have no major function on the player maps but I still like the game so I will get the expa later

I think he only thing that changed in the base mechanics is the landmark card.
I don't think i will need the landmark tokens. I will use the game for solo plays.

Looks a bit underwhelming. I don't feel that the very slight player interaction is 'fixed' in this expansion, as are the themeless buildings.
Themeless buildings is one of the best bits of the game though. Every design doesn't need an excess of rules and design bloat.

That expansion is $25. Fairly inexpensive and standard for expansion pricing.

What are some of the house rules you implemented? It’ll give me an idea of how much still needs work.

chuckm1961 Quite the contrary. I love the game and I am super passionate about it. It is because I care that it bothers me so much.
Had to stop it - just having you read all the cards isn’t a review - just a spoiler
Loved it! Watched till the end! Description clearly shows overview before review! You just got the overview! Haha!
Just fast forward it you big baby, there’s literally time stamps.
