Red Velvet 'Really Bad Boy' Reaction

  • WHAT I FORGOT TO SAY DURING MY REACTION is that the WHOLE song we don't have a chord progression except for the bridge. Well, the bass switches between notes at times, but it's so low and sooo back in the mix, it's barely giving us any melodic support at all. We've got no melodic instrumentals except for the sax. Which is why it doesn't feel like there's much variation between sections, because the low tonic drone never changes. Someone asked me why this song is so addicting, and I think it's because the melody and energy is coming from the vocals (we have no other melody going on except for back up vocals and harmonies). Sure, the percussion samples and sax riff propels us forward, but the real power is constantly coming from the vocal line. So that might be why it's so addicting ^^

    Tbh I love it. I can understand why people criticize it, but I can’t stop listening to it. The vocals are amazing for me and it’s incredibly catchy. The breakdown/bridge is what made me stan. Irene’s scream was iconic. And I love how everything bounces off of the instrumental.
    The rest of the mini album is amazing too. Imo it’s one of their best

      I don't enjoy the scream, quite the opposite. I was hoping it would be just for the video, since when I'm chilling with my headphones on while playing my Red Velvet playlist, I'd really rather not have someone screaming in my ear lol but overall, it's a great song.

  • @mikerojano7305
    @mikerojano7305 5 лет назад +772

    To me, this is just a straight up killer vocal performance. Not so much in the lines, but in the rhythmic complexity. Also, classic Red Velvet, the side tracks are so much better than the main single. Butterflies is a jam.

  • @SWCcomposer
    @SWCcomposer 5 лет назад +1370

    What I like about RBB is how much they have independent lines. I'm not going to declare a preference for this or Power Up, but Power Up relied more harmonic color (the vacillation between vi and bVI, and, most notably the splitting of the third at the end of the chorus), but generally only had one real line at a time, while others were purely harmony, whereas RBB frequently overlaps melodic lines for brief counterpoint, or builds up multiple melodic ostinati (for non-musicians: ostinati are short loops; they can be melodic or rhythmic). Like in the bridge, the piano, while being used primarily for chords, also has a sense of line to its top notes, and then "You're a bad boy, and you're bad for me" moves from being the main line to being a secondary ostinato, and then Wendy sings a new (not ostinato) melody over that. And the largely linear focus also means the when it suddenly blooms into harmonies in the chorus, that really stands out.
    Also, with this album, they (or the people writing for them) are increasingly realizing how they can use other vocal sounds musically, like the whispering in RBB (although that isn't completely new here; Russian Roulette used inhalations between syllables in the intro in much the same way - supplementing the snares in creating bursts of high-register noise) or the vocal fry in Sassy Me. And as classical musicians, we're used to a more open approach to the voice from (perhaps most famously, and for good reason) Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices, but also from predecessors like Meredith Monk's Dolmen Music. And obviously I don't expect Red Velvet to go full Roomful of Teeth, but it's nice to hear the timbral variety (and used in a musical way, not for mere novelty).

      @@ReacttotheK Yeah, Roomful of Teeth is amazing (and Shaw, as part of them, is extra amazing). I got really lucky and heard them here, and then, during ESM's spring break, I was home, and at Blair (where I did undergrad), their spring break was a different week, and Roomful of Teeth was doing a one-week residency, and so I got to hear Roomful of Teeth live again within the same month (and they did some different rep - still with the Partita, of course, but I was impressed that they didn't just tour the exact same program).

    The fact that Isaac has become the face of RV in this channel makes me happy for no reason, lol. And I knew that you would like the song haha. In my opinion, RBB is the best main title from RV since Russian Roulette or Dumb Dumb, certainly among their very best to my taste. I love the use of motifs throughtout many layers, the thick arrangement and sound, and the intensity of the performance.
    Btw, I don't know if this comparison will make any sense to you guys, but something about RBB's songwriting reminds me of the 3rd and 4th movements of Beethoven's 7th Symphony. Very aggressive, bouncy, full of repetition to increase the energy, always crescendo, but sometimes releasing tension just before coming back at it at full force.

      Exactly. It's not a song that your regular kpop fan will appreciate. Much less like. Kpop fans want their little melody, and their little beat, and their little verses, and their little chorus, and their little break, and their little bridge, and then their little chorus again, all nice and neat. Anything that strays too much from that is just "a mess".

    this song isn't messy its just following its stylistic influences, which to me personally sounds most like a mixture of triphop mixed with drum and bass, both genres populated from the 90s, the influences are so heavily in there. Despite it sounding somewhat repetitive it represents 90s club music pretty well, but also showcases the diversity and variation that the girls can execute!

    I don't think it's a mess, I can see why some people like it, but for me this one honestly comes down to personal preference once you put the technical stuff out of the way. For me personally, the pitch of the voices was too *constantly* high to be enjoyable (pure preference, I'm not saying they're bad singers at all, it's just that I don't personally enjoy that constant high pitch especially Seulgi's "ah-ah aaa-ah a-ah ah" part -and the scream that keeps repeating).
    I'm also a former English major, so good lyrics are important to me and that I think is the one thing this song objectively lacks.
    So my personal likes and dislikes just didn't line up with this song. Maybe other people had the same experience.
    But props to everyone who loves it! Red Velvet is a very talented group 😊

    First of all, Yeah Wendy.... Yeah...
    Second, I feel a bit weird when I first hear it, but (like everyone said) I think it grows on me too. Slowly, but still it grows on me. The best part is the bridge, I really really dig it. I still like Butterfly more, it had that City Pop-ish vibe that I like. Can't wait for the reaction to this song and the rest of the album.
    Btw, would you guys be willing to react to Jonah Nilsson feat Lucas - Coffee Break? I get the feeling that Stephen and Emil would be thrilled and it'll be interesting to see their reaction.
    Best of luck for Umu, the reactors and this channel.

    This song reminds me of Signal by Twice. Technically, all of the parts of it are radio-friendly and not very experimental, but the structure of the song is really weird so it’s a bit disorienting on the first listen bc it never goes where you want it to. Ofc, as someone who’s also a classical musician, I LOVE both songs for their experimentation with song structure lmao.
    ...and as a Yeri stan, I VASTLY prefer RBB to Power Up, because Yeri only sang for 7s in Power Up but she has a full 30s here.

    everyone's comparing it to rookie in the way that it grows on you, and i guess i see that with the chorus. i wasn't a fan of either rookie or rbb's chorus. it sounded so repetitive and i'm personally a sucker for lyrical choruses (like bad boy or power up). i was disappointed in the title track solely for the chorus and the bridge, but the rest of the album is phenomenal and i'm still looking forward to the redmare us tour. overall, i've come to appreciate the song for being unique and rv themselves for having such versatility with concepts.

    I'm feeling pretty busy with music right now, so I haven't been working on the album yet. Well, somehow I knew that you would react to this (and not to Bad Boy (BB)). I remember what you wrote back then and I listened carefully to RBB. The song isn't the big one compared to their last comebacks (including BB) but musically RBB is much more interesting than BB. BB with RBB instruments would be really good, but SM decided differently. Too bad that RBB wasn't released on Halloween. That would have been better.
    btw here's a little tip for you: Search on Spotify for 田村芽実. She offers everything from pop, jazz, musical like (she is a trained musical singer). Since she is Japanese, I don't expect any reaction (for copyright reasons) but just listen in. That's all I want ;)
