Which Racing Game has the best Sound?

- Special thanks to "FRENCHY" for the Forza 7 footage.
So, let's avoid the stupid war between fanboys and let's discover together which game has the most accurate engine sounds!
I've passed 4 days on internet watching a lot of videos about real car sounds. I accuarately selected the videos with the best sounds: HD, less muffed as possible, clear, less wind noise, less distorted as possible.
Of course, in some cases they can't exactly replicate the HD microphones used for the engine recordings, but if you watch the video, you'll notice some racing game sounds are exactly the same!
Trying to evaluate sounds in racing game it's obviously subjective, but I've been UNBIASED to give you my honest opinion about them.
I rate the sound according on how close is it compared to the real sound.
Gran Turismo got the bad sound reputation during theses years with the previous chapters. But GT Sport was a real improvement in this aspect, even if it still got the LOWEST rating for the OUTSIDE sounds at the end of the video. But concerning the INSIDE cockpit sounds, honestly Polyphony did a good job.
About Project CARS 2, I think the main problem is the high notes are too high, "destroying" the clear sound of the car. Moreover, some sounds are recycled: for example the Porsche Carrera GT and the Lamborghini Huracan have the same sound in PC2. And it's a shame, because as you saw the Aston Martin in this video has the best sound.
About Forza Motorsport, sounds are quite average. Some of them are realistic, others are more "synthetic". Some fans of the series complained about a lower sound quality compared to the previous chapters.
About Assetto Corsa, inside cockpit sound are the TOP. But cornerning the outside sounds, it has bad and good sounds, so quality is quite inconsistent in my opinion. Most of AC outside sounds are recorded from static position, and in some cases they aren't good. But overall, I think AC has good sounds.
About Dirt Rally 2.0, it wins this challenge, especially for the outside sounds. Almost all engines sound realistic, not distorted or muffed. The real counterparts are perfectly recorded and integrated.
Anyway, I hope you'll appreciate the effort I put into this. :-) - Игры
I feel engine sounds in games/sims are to clean. I mean they might sound loud and brutal but they lack those dirty, metallic sounds of real race cars.
Forza motorsport 7 has that sound in some racing cars but in the interior not the exterior
Tire sound in most games not existed at all.
Amen
check out RaceRoom sounds, it does exactly what you described

BRUH. EXACTLY what i just posted.
It needs to be unique, it needs raw sound, creativity, interpretation etc etc.

Realism FTW 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Project Cars sounds are engineered to make you go deaf
Totally.
Real life is the one that is engineered to make you go deaf... It sounds so much more powerful than any record and FAR, FAR from any game, when the Porsche GT3 passed by here on the Rally jeez, even my ears bleed lol what a huge POWERFUL sound specially at just inches from it since I was a road commissionaire or whatever its called for the rally so I was just at the edge of the track.
@@guily6669 I really appreciate the realism the game tries to emulate, but I don't think that's the wisest choice when it comes to gameplay, since beginner players/casual players can easily get a headache while racing
Pedro Barcellos
"Let's make the sounds super realistic!"
"This is perfect. But do you want realistic or super realistic?"
"All the way brother."
Project cars is a really good game but the sounds ruin it
I think that Dirt Rally deserves both a 10/10 for that Audi Quattro sounds, for me they are on point no doubt
Totally.
Agreed, codemasters know how to make good engine sounds
I too agree!
just lacks better turbo sounds
But i will say, the studios use HD microphones to record audio, and those vids have mid tier mics. Just sayin
Also, testing environmentn and acoustics plays a huge, HUGE role.
The exterior videos are also mostly trackside, so there's a bunch of doppler effects and reverb from the scenery affecting the sound, compared to the chase-cams used in-game.
They aren't even mid-tier. It's literally a go-pro. At best it has a dead cat on it, but based on all the wind noise I'd say no. Makes the GT86 sound like a fart can.
MID TIER?????? THEY LOOK LIKE THEY ARE HANDMADE MICS
Also.. In PC2.. He used a Cabrio 458 and as the Real it was Hard Top.. 4/10 for inside sound. Like wow.
Gran Turismo has come some way from its Vacuum days of GT5
GT1-GT6 are vacuum GTs. But there are very limited cars that actually sound real during those times. The 787B, LFA, Gallardo LP 560-4, more.

There's a lot to say about comparing sounds, but I tend to agree with your scores.

I think the shifts are something really important to the sound immersion; and many developers neglect that
Unpopular opinion(?)
*cough* GT Sport *cough*
The speciale you used in PC2 for the inside sound is a convertible one and the sound of the real one is not. So the sound would definitely be different. Or I'm completely wrong 😂
You're not wrong. I thought the same thing
Nope, the tone in PCars 2 is totally different, it doesn't change that much with the roof open/closed
@@chrissss696 It will definitly change!
they didn't get it that good but it was a little close to the real one, but it's a convertible like compared with a non-convertible one xD
No no no, it's too high pitched, having the roof open increases the volume, reduces the muffled effect but doesn't increase the pitch
Plus different times of the day. Differences in temperature in real, life alter the speed of sound. And also what kind of environment you're driving in. So yeah, that might also affect the quality of sound.
Man, that took a lot of effort and thank you!
6.5/10 for Assetto Corsa’s 458, are you high? They were practically identical!
The interior is a 9.5/10 at the very least, same goes for the Audi quattro interior.
Same for gt sports outside sound for a110
@@mahlenbiznes3419 you mean 8
Think he's deaf un one ear lol
Assetto Corsa definetly scores higher than whats given in this comparison, for example the 458 outside sound in AC sounds nearly identical to the real life counterpart.
IMO Assetto and Driveclub are at the top in terms of sound design
I think Gran Turismo Sport wins for the 458 Italia. Here’s a better video because this has a camera on the car in real life, here the real life video is a flyby so it’s not reliable and he should’ve used a replay view for the flybys.
ruclips.net/video/uJ0knCvlzBU/видео.html
Have you tried Raceroom? By far the best
Also NFS has some nice sounding cars
Driveclub sounds are nothing like real life, they all sound like if you were inside a tunnel, meanwhile AC has muffled and bad recorded sounds, althought they are very realistic, far better on interior, same in Driveclub
I think the assetto corsa 458 sound is a 10
Versus 194 me too
not really... because in the video it's inside a building... the 458 in assetto corsa resound too much
Columb_art he just said he think
I think outside sounds were recorded from a stationary position on a racetrack, that's why it resoinds so much. Inside sounds are mostly spot on
same
i just feel like the creators of the soundfiles for most racing games just forget to put suficent amounts of bass in them. like the the 86 in the beginning, sound have a little more rumble not much but a little the alpine 2, make it fill the headset or room if ur using speakers with sound, so it sounds like you are at a race track, maybe not as loud as one but the rumblimg atleast. like if a v10 super car passes you a low speed u hear that deep rumble. ok now im just ramblimg so im gonna stop it here. if any car sound file creators are watching this pls use jut a little more bass, :D
It's like they all have shitty sound systems and don't seem to understand the benefit of a well balanced sound, it doesn't need to be overly loud. I agree that most sounds in these games have a bias towards highs, sometimes mids, but never fully employ the low end, which makes lots of engines lose their character
NFS is arcade game but it get mostly the sound right
@@hakim10080 good point there. maybe the sounds guys got a budget cut everytime and they get some shitty old microsoft headsets. those super tiny ones XD. the audiophile grade headset i have atm really gets all the sounds in. and somtimes i just feel like dying after hearing some of the sounds and then what car it is. its horrible.
nikosator I was thinking exactly the same about the lack of bass. I have done some sound mods for GTR2 and GT legends, it seems most makers of racing sims regard the sounds of the cars as an afterthought. I'm sure most people could modify these sounds to make them better if they had the right software
Should've used heavy metal equalizer sound with bass boost instead
That real interior sound of the Impreza sounded like, in the beginning, like an MG-42.
LOL.
Haha german go nyoooom
Theses cars are pretty famous, this test basically tells us that assetto gets everything right. I wonder though what if you tried with less known cars like the Renault Mégane (i think its in GT Sport and Forza and i know its in PC2) in older gran turismo games you could really hear the vaccum cleaner sound on theses sorts of road cars.
Still this test is pretty interesting, i thought GT Sport and Forza were going to be miles away from sims like assetto or PC2, but apparently PC2 doesnt really care about car sounds and Forza and GT Sport are not that far of, that's good to know thank you for making this !
Forza 7 has sadly the worst sound design of any Forza game. Forza 2-6 was pretty much on point.
You should have got somebody to record Forza Motorsport 4 footage! Most people consider that game to be basically perfect in terms of engine notes.
PaneledPear6555 Too bad that game is ancient history
I still have Forza Motorsport 4. But no, compared to Forza Motorsports 2, the sound made a big downgrade in 4.
Yes, there are additional detailed sounds from exhaust pops and transmission whines in Forza 4, but the sounds of the engines themselves was by far the best in Forza Motorsport 2. Also know that exhaust upgrades in Forza 2 had their own separate audio files. So the sound of the car would not just get amplified and less muffled when upgrading an exhaust, it would literally be a recording of an engine with an upgraded exhaust. This made it sound much more realistic.
@@joostinatortje It really depends on the vehicle. I think overall Forza Motorsport 4 had more accurate, higher quality engine notes, but the number of vehicles may have degraded the quality of certain examples from Forza Motorsport 2 and Forza Motorsport 3. Still, I think overall it has the best engine sounds of any game.
Them neutering upgraded sounds though was kind of unfortunate. At least we're seeing that in Forza Horizon 5 which sounds fairly solid so far.
@@PaneledPear do you have more information on how Horizon 5 is comparing to Horizon 4 regarding car sounds?
btw if you want really realistic sounds: Assetto Corsa is the most realistic that I have experienced so far. Im not saying all cars have the most realistic sounds as there is quite some variation in quality between cars, but overall it's really realistic in terms of internal car sounds and car sounds from external tv camera's etc.
@@joostinatortje Besides that Playground games sound preview video, the stream they did, and a bunch of comparisons between the sounds shown so far and Forza Horizon 4, nah. That video though did show a massive improvement and I can only hope most other cars live up to that.
Assetto Corsa has a couple of very accurate engine notes and solid cockpit audio simulation, but it's the shift sounds that kind of kill it for me. Shifting up especially sounds extremely unrealistic. If that was fixed, then some cars would sound amazing in that game. Assetto Corsa Competizione doesn't have that issue, but you're basically limited to a couple race spec vehicles, of course. I think that game sounds incredible though.
Asetto P1 gtr 10/10??
Was like really sound clips cut from recordings and pasted straight in the game xD
Hello Viperconcept, my name is Daniel. I see almost always that I can your videos and I admire your work a lot, your videos are great and you play very well, congratulations for your excellent performance in all games and for your great charisma in your videos.
cool but i wonder why did u not do the outside sounds from the replays? (like real videos)
can i ask a question did you race in gt online against lime better and anthony paris please reply i need to know
Nope, I don't know these 2, sorry!
ok nvm
In Forza Motorsport 2, when you upgrade your car with a race exhaust, it actually changes the sound. This was back in 2007, and I'm not sure if Forza has implemented it in a game since. Anyway, another great video viper :)
Oh yes, sound changes quite a lot in some cars when using a race exhaust
6:52 "Do a barrel roll!"
YEET
My conclusion. The sounds on these games are not that different to each other and although your reference "real" sounds were dreadful in a number of cases, the games do sound like the real thing.
I think that the fact of the P1 going away in the real clip changes the way you listen to it, so maybe I'd change some marks, but was a really good video
Best sounding game for me is dr2. 0
The rwd historics sound amazing. And so do the group b cars. The delta s4 is brain shattering nice.
guns sound like shit, animals are ok, horse is ok but most of sound suck ass
Remember when people just played racing games for fun rather than over obsessing the car sounds? Yeah me neither
Adam yeah because the sounds used to be good. They cut corners nowadays and it shows big time
That first clip is a GoPro and directly above exhasut. That sounds really different
I still think the Alpine A110-50 from DriveClub is the most ear splitting (yet lovely) sound I've ever heard from the games I've played
Put Driveclub in this. Most of the time it'll score more than 7
Yes please add Driveclub. Some of the recordings they made were actually kept by some companies (Mercedes for example) because of their quality and accuracy.
@Gibbon Oh I forgot Forza 7 is totally not arcade. Totally not just talking about sound and not physics.

13:55 they sound way diffrent when the interior is stripped and fitted with a roll cage, not sure that is a fair comparrison :/
No RaceRoom Racing Experience? That game, by far, have the best sound of all.
Wow nice intro clip, I got some nostalgia from that xD
Actually the the EJ22 engine was not used in the Group A rally Imprezas shown in the clip, they always used the 2 liter EJ20 to comply with the rules. The 22B used the 2,2 liter EJ22 engine, but not the rally-cars. The exhaust rumble you hear in the real sound clip is due to the unequal lenght exhaust headers which gives a lovely boxer rumble, this design was used on the Legacy RS Group A rally car from 1990-1993 and the Impreza 555 Group A car from 1993-1996, then in 1997, the new " World rally car " rules came into play, which allowed more freedom, and Subaru designed their stunning looking 2-door Impreza WRC for these new rules, and installed equal length headers on it, thereby changing the sound to a more flat sounding noise, and between 1997-2008, all Wrc Imprezas had equal length headers, Dirt rally 2.0 did a really good job with both the Group A Subarus and the later Wrc Subarus, the difference is clear to hear. The Subaru road cars still used the unequal length headers, so the 22B uses them in stock trim, hence they sound mote alike the Group A Subarus, than the Wrc Imprezas.
The 22B was a special road car based on the 2-door Wrc car bodyshell, and it arrived in 1998 as a homage to the wrc cars.
From vacuum cleaners, blenders and lawnmowers to some pretty accurate sounds.
Awsome video🔥🔥🔥
Another great video from you
GT Sport goes for a stock engine sound
Forza goes for a straight piped sound
and Assetto Corsa and Project cars are somewhere in the middle.
Im just not sure about the validity of many of the recorded interior, and even exterior, sounds. I feel like the cameras recording could be toning down the real sound of the cars. Maybe its just me though.
Yeah, especially on the GT86.
IMHO Codemasters nailed every car sound outside. And that doppler effect out of every object! In cab sounds are very good too beause of that resonance filter and a bit of reverb
From what game are the sound effects and the music in the intro? I know them so well and brings back memories but I forgot which game its actually is... Can anybody help me? 😄

You should rename the name of this video to "Which racing game has the best ENGINE sound". Also I miss RaceRoom Experience in this list. I don't play this game, but it has one of the best overall sounds in racing games (I'm not certain about the engine sound thou).
Wow!, that starting menu sound are from the N°1 demo disco for the first Playstation 👌
The drive away videos are kinda hard to judge, unless you recreated the game version in replay mode of selected car driving by in comparison to real video so they can match distance/sound, idk that what I would have done. other than, that was an awesome video
5:08 hold up. Something seems suspicious hmmmmm. I thought youre reviewing a toyota 86 😂

We need more this kind of comparison with real sounds so we can actually compare how accurate it is.
Driveclub has surprised me nice with its sound few years ago.. it was something fresh after many games. I've never heard its real cars, but I really enjoyed virtual engine sounds in my headphones - that's the only rule that really something mean for me.

Hey Viperconcept you should do a video explaining how does the downshifting "rhythm" affects the speed in the begining of a corner
Wow... in GT Sport they were able to afford and upgrade to the new Dyson models.... Impressive.
Things to keep in mind.
-The footage of the real car sounds are of lower quality than what you may hear in game, interior and/or exterior. This will also affect the dynamic range of the audio, leading to false differences.
-The positioning of the camera can affect the quality as well.
-Certain sounds are absent from the interior cam, such as wind resistance, chassis rattle, etc., real or game.
-Certain sounds are absent from the exterior cam, such as superchargers, turbo chargers, etc., real or game.
-The location as to where the audio (environmentally) was recorded can affect the acoustics of the audio.
-Exterior shot are usually track side. This means certain aspects such as the Doppler Effect is absent in the exterior shot of the in game shots.
-This topic will always be objective. Everyone's opinion will differ in one way or another.
My results:
Dirt Rally 2.0: Good all around. My only real complaint is the transmission whine.
Forza Motorsport 7: A little over done in some places. Good environmental interactivity.
Gran Turismo Sport: Has come a long way, but still needs improvement in certain areas. It does one thing the best in my opinion though. Environmental reverb in replays.
Assetto Corsa: Great interior, weak exterior.
Project Cars 2: The volume is just TOO DAMN LOUD!!! It sounds like some of the audio is peaking a bit.
Forza 7 had a sound patch recently for +30 cars, but still need to improve a lot. If you want, I can record some videos for you, Viper.
you giving the ac brz a 8/10 for the outside sound is so peculiar to me, considering it sounded like a uel fa20 instead of a el fa20
A lot of people complain about Project Cars and their love of really really loud cars, but honestly for some of the cars its realistic. Race cars are not quiet at all. But I'll agree with the fact that the 86 sounds way off.

If you’re doing experiments like this you must have constants. Especially the 458 experiment when you didn’t specify if it was the speciale and when you used a dyno clip instead of the one you used before. I think this would help judgements be more accurate and believable
The 458 accelerating on the track was a Speciale.
The 458 on the dyno was a stock Italia.
I have a serious question, though. Could you please add "sound" to your racing game chart? Or, at least an average sound rating 1-10 next to a given games' point on the graph?

There are few arcades worth mentioning. My favorite sounding game of them all without doubt is NFS 2010. Hands down, no competition.
The best NFS game in sounds is absolutely MW 2012, every car sounds just like real life
I was hoping to see raceroom but sadly it's not a popular racing game.
No laser scanned tracks only nordschleife and the game looks really, really outdated. And the system of buying cars and tracks via external shops - VRP, real money... FFS.
@@TheDownloader86 Beside, it is not available on consoles.
Most of them don't have proper ambient sound (ie, cabin or outside environment reaction), and seem to lack low end too. For me that's a key factor that's largely missing.
Obviously the mic's are all different but they could still get impulse responses from the cabins and tracks at various parts to give it a better 'feel'. DR2 does a pretty good job!
Dirt Rally does that "impulse responses from the cabins". But it's generic. Nice to read an informed comment.
