    As I was watching this I realized that we sometimes use "tomar" in English too..
    Waiter/ess: "What would you like to drink?"
    Patron: "I'll take a Pepsi"
    Or
    "Let's grab a beer and catch up sometime!"

    Someone arguing about saying, "beber" vs. "tomar" reminds me of when a person would say, "I don't know, can you?" if you use the word "can I" instead of "may I."

    I'm learning spanish and I have a hard time deciding which form of the last tense to use. For example estuve vs estaba.

    • @hg77777
      @hg77777 6 лет назад +18

      Emma Nayira
      Spanish has two simple past tenses, the preterite and the imperfect. "Estuve" uses the preterite, while "estaba" is an example of the imperfect.
      You use the preterite (estuve) when you talk about something that happened once or that happened more than once but had a specific end, whereas you use the imperfect (estaba) for habitual or repeated actions.
      Some examples:
      Estaba (non-specific range of time):
      "I was in the kitchen" = "Yo estaba en la cocina"
      "I was sad" = "Yo estaba triste"
      Estuve (specific range of time):
      "I was in the kitchen this morning" = "Yo estuve en la cocina esta mañana"
      "They were here" = "Ellos estaban aqui"
      "They were here last night" = "Ellos estuvieron aqui anoche"
      I hope it helps 🍀

    It is almost the same thing in italian.. the verb "prendere" (to take..) and the verb "bere" (to drink).
    One would say "Prendo un cafè" (I'll have[take] coffee). "Prendo l'autobus" (I'll take the bus)
    One would also say "Bevo un cafè" (I'll drink coffee - in a bar or restaurant when asked).
    The difference would be that you will not say the verb "Bere" to be emphatic or a bit formal, one would use it to just be specific or just because of preference. Both verbs are treated almost as equals when one is to consume something.
    Love your videos.

    En España, cuando alguien esta borracho, decimos que esta bebido también. En México creo que decís que ha tomado. Se pueden usar indistintamente en ese contexto. Probablemente los que aprendan español en USA lo digan tal y como se dice en México y los europeos como en España. Se puede decir que beber y tomar son casi sinónimos aunque tomar puede referirse también a "comer" y en algunos casos no puede ser sustituido ni por comer ni por beber. Por ejemplo, no puedes decir "me voy a comer mi medicamento", suena raro. "Debes decir me voy a tomar mi medicamento"
    Espero que esto ayude un poco,

    Great lesson. I need a better understanding of the difference between "ir" and "va". Muchos gracias!

    • @jhfcoll
      @jhfcoll 9 лет назад

      Stair Leon "IR" is the infinitive " to go" and " VA " in the conjugation of the verb " IR " . The conjutacion of IR y presente tense is: yo VOY, tú VAS , él/ella/usted VA, ellos VAN, vosotros VAIS , ellos/ustedes VAN . As you see, "VA " is the verb "IR" conjugated in the third person in singular ( he / she / it ) . Greetings from Buenos Aires.

    I don't know if anybody mentioned it. But in Britain, they sometimes say "take tea". It's how I remember tomar as to drink and to take.

      Exactly, "Tomar un cafe" or "tomar un te" is like the exact equivalent to the English "Taking a Thé" or "Taking a Coffee" (In fact Tomar means to Take to Grab, but by association it also means to drink, just as in English take means to grab something while taking a Coffee, by association, is to drink a coffee because to drink you usually use a cup or a glass you grab to pull it towards your mouth). Beber is the exact equivalent to drink.
