Plugs are great for aquaculture, but not so great for home aquarium aquascaping. You can always break the plug apart and reglue it to a piece of rock you like. The coral will eventually cover both.
When I started into the hubby, I heard horror stories about poisoned people after fragging zoanthids. Now I'm watching that several reefers handle them with any precaution. I don't get it.
I think when you are handling true palys you should because they have the deadly poisonous fluids I myself would handle them with gloves if I was fragging, in the tank when I touch them I wash really good after and immediately I don’t waste time. Better safe than sorry.
There are dangerous yes, but as long as you’re not chopping them up and pissing them off enough to make them release toxins you’ll be okay. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be careful, but don’t live in fear. Most of the time if you have a strong immune system then you don’t really even need gloves to stick your hands in the tank.
I don't remember exactly where I bought them from, but I ordered them from some plastics retailer online. I got an entire box from them, and in that quantity, they cost the same as the white egg crate.
Hi Than. Hey I have a nice Zoa "garden" going in my 300gal. DD reef. The problem is one of the zoas is overtaking the others. The colony is on a larger rock that I cannot remove. Is it possible to frag this colony while it is in the display tank and do it one polyp at a time? They are large polyps and I think I could cut them fairly easily but not sure if the cut polyps will survive or if the toxin will contaminate my tank? Thanks for any help. - Kevin
It all depends on their environment. You know the basic things like stability, light, flow, placement, and possibly species. I have many different strains and they grow at different rates. I have noticed that if you don’t crowd them they grow faster. Leave a few inches between each frag from them to spread out. When they fill in the space it’ll look nice.
I can say first hand palys will mess you up big time!!! I had some spray me in the face while cutting them. I had to take 2 benadryl. Luckily I was able to sleep it off for a day and half.
Did the guy that made this video survived??? No Gloves, Glasses or anything... I touched the water where a Paly was squeezed and I felt sick for 24 hrs.. Very Strong Metal taste and other issues... Zoas and Palys you need to be careful..
Love your videos! However, your audio is so clean and clear I can't stand to listen to the spit and saliva clacking around in your jaw. So I find myself just muting the videos >.< It's like nails to a chalkboard. Sorry.
I appreciate all the positive feedback :) Thanks again.

I cited your video for a new Captive Propagation section on Wikipedia's Zoantharia article.

Another great vid and lovely images Than!
if you cut them underwater, there's no chance of the palytoxin getting somewhere unpredictable.
@amir1001shab - The camera used was a Canon 5D mk II.
Your brave
Hi. Thanks for the videos. Pretty awesome. Where can I get black egg crate? I can only find the white one in local hardware stores.

If polips are growing over a rock which you cannot revome to frag, can I cut the polips inside the display? Or the toxin could kill my fishes?
Cara bagus
You showed lunar eclipses at the beginning but they look nothing like any of the ones I've seen or own

Can these pollute your water? I just fragged a bunch of paly and the next day my candy cane frags RTN
are you using ordinary think super glue? CA glue? no worry of contaminating water?
1:40 - what type of zoa is that? I have the same type and never could find out what type of zoa they are.
utter chaos
How long can you keep them out of water while the super glue dries?
It doesn’t take long for the glue to dry and by the time it does the zoas will be fine after back in the water
108987, I'd hate to know what you do with your polyps if they poison you in such places.
How fast will Zoa's grow (spread out) on their own without fragging them?

Great Vid Than!
