Great video! I've just finished meddling with battery protection circuit in one project. I've found that with one simple change to standard IC you can protect your circuit from reverse polarity. By placing a diode between the IC ground and the battery ground -you prevent damage to your circuit by blocking the reverse voltage.

Hey Robert, find someone from EV or drone applications. Never saw someone properly design multiple battery management with inductive loads. How to make recuperation properly? How properly connect multiple batteries that may have a little bit different voltage? Depencding on EV/drone voltage goes 12-60v 10-200A, want to see some basics about it.

If BMS will cutt off power during fly drone will drop down and damage itself, that's the reason
@@sXAPOLLls battery cell will not short by itself, if there would be shortcut it would be by electric components side so yes, bms in drone is useless. Maximum what it can need is cell balancer and S voltmeter to let know when cutoff charger and report battery issue

Hi Robert, love your channel. Thank you and Alex for providing us that clear explained content about batteries. What i missed a little was how to deal with stacked packs like a 4s7p or something like that? What is with cell balancing? Do i need it for every single cell? Or just per each node where the voltage equals?

Thanks a lot for your superb content ! A relatively "consumerish" question ... Since a battery is specified in terms of its charge / discharge cycles, suppose we keep the appliance (eg. laptop) powered continuously by the charger, would it prolong the battery life. I assume that a laptop would draw power from the charger and not from the battery, hence seldom discharging the battery.

Never have i heard a single battery being called a cell.
I love LiFePO4. NMC looks impressive on paper, but it degrades so much more quickly, it's not worth the added cost and danger for a couple years of higher capacity. And the degradation is slowed down by not topping it up or fully discharging it, so you end up treating it like it has the capacity of LiFe from the start anyway.
i just encountered a new problem with battery powered designs. when the battery is first inserted, the battery holder springs create a series of loose contact phenomenon (similar to a switch debounce). The protection IC doesn't immediately see the battery voltage at its full value but a sequence of pulsating values instead. The battery protection IC interprets this as an over-discharged situation and therefore disconnects the battery from the rest of the circuit. i just added a larger cap on the protection chip to delay its startup just enough for the battery voltage to stabilize
Is there a way for a common person to tell if a battery is damaged and is going to burst and cause a fire in a next few days or weeks, save for obvious swelling? A have a few old devices with Li-ion batteries lying around without use - are they becoming dangerous over time?
Batteries normally only become hazards of they are abused. Ex: temp, current, discharge level.
Aside from swelling, there isn't a good way to visibly asses the state of a battery. You can use a DMM to check the cell voltages.
If a cell is really low or 0V, it would be better to properly dispose of it, especially if it is more then a few years old.
Why do you need short-circuit protection, if you already have protection against both over-discharge and over-current? Is there some other way a short-circuit can cause damage?
When using one single 18650 battery to power an esp32 project at 3.3V through an HT7833 LDO, how should input and output capacitors?
what about usb fast charging and data transfer on the same port
If the battery that I am using in my project has a built-in protection circuit (DW01A IC), is it worth adding another DW01A protection IC on the PCB of the designed device? Or does it miss the point and could cause problems in the operation of the built-in protection circuit?
If the battery pack already has protection, then there isn't a need to add another protection IC. They may conflict with each other.
