She tried to tell her family so many bloody times she wanted to do this and they still left her with them. there was also a lot of extra pressure put upon her that would not of been there for a more modern thinking family.

Not simply modern thinking family, a true christian familiy would have understood she us not able to take care of the children in that mental state and would have helped her. She should never have been left alone with the children. She was obviously not in the right state of mind to take care of them.

The mental health facility that i worked at was the MOST AMAZING facility that i have ever seen with the MOST CARING nurses and directors that i have ever met, which literally brought me to tears. I will never forget it. I whole heartedly believe that psychosis can be temporary and need to be treated differently even tho i was only there a short time - it changed my outlook. Learned so much. Those patients at that facility (unnamed for obvious privacy reasons) but wow.

So grateful for you to cover a case on this subject. I suffered from mild psychosis starting at 6 months pregnant (I say mild because I wasnt sectioned, I moved in with my mum who gave me round the clock care, but Iwas on and off catatonic, mute and couldnt eat for 3 months as well having an extreme irrational belief that bad things would happen to me or my baby). I was only prescibed a low dose of anti depressants due to being pregnant...3 years later I am still on these antidepressants, max dose, possibly due to never being on any anti psychosis meds.
But all is good with me and my daughter. I only wish it wasnt always referred to as *post* natal depression/psychosis...I do wish people were aware and recognised that this can happy at any point antenatally due to the change in hormones and over whelming life change

In her first trial Andrea Yates was found guilty and was sentenced to death in Texas. Park Dietz was the Psychiatrist that messed up her trial. Thank God, they retried her and found her insane and committed her to a psychiatric hospital. She will never be released. It has been reported very often she will ask to see her children. It was a tragedy. I don't understand why they didn't prosecute her husband. Rusty.......He is repulsive . He knew she was really sick and left her with the children and went to work. Of course, he has a new wife and family and poor ole Andrea is forgotten.

I'm a former psychiatric nurse. Many years ago I looked after someone with PN Depression. She had been depressed before, apparently because she could not have a baby. After the birth her depression did not improve. I worked in a general acute admissions ward where we also had paints long-term who were not going to be admitted" permanently”. She was on 1-1 nursing. She did not directly try to harm her baby but would"accidentally/ absentmindedly " allow him to come into danger- she placed him on the worktops next to a boiling kettle, she would turn her back and walk away when he was on the worktop to be changed,"forgetting" that he was at the stage of turning over. ( Of course no baby of any age should be left unattended on s high surface). No idea what became of them

🌼🦋I'm very scared because after our third and forth. child my kids were in danger since at those times I thought we had no choice but to die. Whenever I tried to ask Gor help from my husband or anybody I thought was a friend it didn't go well which made things worse. I am so happy after 11 years and, looking back, understanding better what had happened that we are alive. Why is it so hard to get help? If you have a friend or family member that needs to talk why not make time to listen? Then we might see that something is wrong and they may need help. It seems most people already know they can say how they feel to others like another social rule. No wonder close friends are so shocked when someone they know does something crazy because of this culture of not making other people uncomfortable with someone's true feelings and listens to each other💔. Also, some just don't care or understand, to busy, I don't know.

I remember this being just a sad case. I always feel sorry for everyone in cases like these and it’s exactly why it’s important to get someone help if they’re deteriorating. She clearly didn’t become unstable enough to kill her children overnight and the husband figured he could pray it out of her and just have her keep having children cuz being a good mom will cure it. Smfh. This almost happened to my friends. Their mom has schizophrenia and almost killed her and her brothers when they were little cuz she thought it was the only way to save them from the end of the world. They locked themselves into their bathroom and barricaded the door until their father came home. She’ll be fine but then like many patients she’ll think she no longer needs to take her meds. Like I remember talking to her and she was fine and all of a sudden began talking to me about how the hospital took her babies. As far as I know tho she hasn’t been a danger like that in a long time tho. Another similar case was there was a young girl recently who thought her daughter was a clone/doll/evil changeling or something. So she decapitated the daughter. The kid was little like a baby or toddler. Then she went to the police station and was completely out of it. She kept thinking the cops were there to sell her into sex slavery and kept asking them for drugs. This was another case of the family thinking just being religious would fix everything

Found this channel after reading your book on Audible. Absolutely escatic to see someone unpacking this case, in fact half way through your book I was actually wondering how you would have interpreted it. This case is close to my moral nuggets as I also experienced postpartum psychosis and I also came from an extreme religious background. It impacted how I approached and handled my following three pregnancies, post pregnancies and how I respond to pregnant and post delivery mates and partners. I was gobsmacked that it only occurs 1-2 out of 1000 pregnancies. Also, I was really shocked when I first deep dived into Yates story years ago, to see the sheer amount of anti psychotic medication it took to bring her out of the initial onset of psychosis not only after the crime, but in her previous admissions. I read they had to withdraw her due to the impact such high doses of haldol can have long term, yet didn't appear to even consider why she needed such high doses nor find a safe alternative. I always wondered what was going on at a neurological or neurological level before and after childbirth with her and if this was ever looked into.

He left her alone for 30 minutes until his mother would come and in that short span of time she murdered all her five children. I remember this case being a hot topic when I was younger and lived in Midwest USA. The amount of hate and vitriol was truly impressive, even when people heard about the various factors involved including her husband and her delusional state of being at the time, as well as the number of heavy red flags for ages before hand.
I know someone who suffered from post natal psychosis when I had my own kids and it was a WILD ride. Very different than post natal depression or baby blues. Really lovely person, very much loved and wanted her baby, had mild depression periodically - at the same time baby was due she had also moved away from her family and support system to a rural area and her partner was a right royal tool in terms of emotional or practical support. At a guess may have had a cluster B-ish PD of some sort or traits of it at any rate. The move was one she felt like she had to make to support his career/personal choices rather than because she at all enjoyed being super rural. Her baby had to be taken away for a period as she was going to pour boiling water out of a tea kettle down the infants throat among other things and was completely out of touch with reality, hallucinating visually and audio etc. They were apart for a good while and then 'together' but with a family member essentially the 'foster parent' of the infant a year or so. Many years later the baby is now a teen, she split with the father and has the usual stress of single parenting and lowish income but otherwise doing well.
I know another person who suffered from prenatal depression very severely, to the point of making a strong attempt at revoking her life subscription while baby was almost due. History of mild mental health issues, mild physical disability but nothing severe. Thankfully both were caught in time and are safe, healthy and sound a few years later with a better support system. It may have well prevented a post natal psychosis by having the team looking after them and watching closely.

This was premeditated. She was in and out of psychosis. The doctors explained to her that her delusions weren't real but she didn't listen. She wanted to follow her cult leader. That was a choice. I had psychosis once but didn't know what it was when I experienced it. Now that I know what it was I know my delusions and hallucinations weren't real and that what I experienced was an episode of faulty brain chemistry not some divine intervention. Our medical system is not responsible for people joining cults. That is criminal behavior. Her kids were screwed. They are the true victims.

If she had been a normal person instead of a religious wacko, yes she might’ve still suffered from PPD and psychosis, but without all that religious garbage in her head, she might not have felt compelled to murder her children. It started with that choice.

Just watched Mr Black’s episode featuring you! Insightful. I would not allow even my own child to come home. It’s not about family ties. It’s about the break in the mind. I could not handle it if my child reoffended because they didn’t take medication or something. I would be as much to blame. Just a bit on that…
So for the first case of yours I chose: The major problem about the US’s health care system is most of “we” doesn’t know it’s flawed. Most of “we” thinks other countries are just like us. Only about 5 years ago after I watched something on RUclips did I realize other countries don’t do many things the way the US does them. The sheep blindly follow. But really what other choice do we have? Elect someone who sees a better way? Look at the backlash from ObamaCare. It wasn’t perfect but a step in the right direction.
I remember this case in 2002 when I first heard of it. Yates is my maiden name and so I was interested. I disagreed heavily with my mother who defended her, said it wasn’t her fault. I’d just had a baby and I was sick over the thought of a mother who could kill her children, especially a newborn. But now I kinda understand. She needs help but I also don’t think she should go free either. Who knows when the next time she snaps is. Too risky in my opinion.

Combined with an obscure and oppressive form of christian beliefs that her husband held as well as her high/rigid personal Christian standards probably premorbid, set the stage for an untreated postpartum depression that spiralled quickly into postpartum psychosis. With each pregnancy this condition exacerbated and was left untreated (or under-treated). This poor soul was so very very ill, but was left in this condition without meaningful treatment until she killed her children. She lived in a state that had long ago departed from reality and was left with dependent children. This level of neglect by her husband rises to criminal neglect of not only Andrea by her husband, but their children as well because it would be acutely foreseeable that this woman was not a competent caretaker of herself nor her children in that state.

There was a patient there with early onset dementia who had been SEVERELY sexually abused as a child. Obviously early onset moves quicker, the only time she remembered was being abused and before that. I watched her receive ECT, i had heard of it before. This patient was severe but when i heard from other team members how she was when she first arrived....it was DRASTICALLY improved. ECT can be a literal life saver and pull people out of depression that is untreatable or resistant to medication.

I’ve personally cared for women suffering w postpartum psychosis as a psychiatric RN. It’s real, it’s frightening, it’s suffering. Most displayed delusional and paranoid thinking. Spouses and families are confused.. and absolutely these women are unable to care for themselves if not treated.
My heart breaks for this woman. Just looking at her you can see how sick she is.. it’s a shame she never received the treatment she needed. She was not able to advocate for herself.. she was floridly psychotic… her history alone should have raised alarm bells w her husband. I’m trying not to be judge mental…but I struggle w how he didn’t see how sick she was. Denial perhaps?
I agree the system needs an overhaul. Too often I’ve watched pts discharge far too early due to insurance.
I worked in ECT for 2 years as well. I was hesitant at first but I saw so many pts symptoms improve… the procedure itself is less than a minute.. and w the anesthesia used pts hardly move during the procedure. Most of the time spent was recovering the pt; waking them up, using the bathroom, eating and drinking- usually an hour or two. Then they go home. Most had 3 treatments a week for 8-10 weeks & then did maintenance treatments ( the amt of treatments varied from pt to pt), it was helpful and life changing for many. Kitty Dukakis wrote a good book about her experience w ECT.. she wrote it w a doctor so you get her personal experience and the doctor explains the medical side of ECT. I recommend it

Very interesting content, just the background music is very annoying and not appropriate. It is too cheerful.

I honestly believe the people close to her had a responsibility to get her help. Her husband may have worked for NASA but he was not very observant.
"They" believed that God wanted them to have as many children as they could. Her husband willingly supported her going off her medication (despite a psychiatrist strongly advising against it) so she could get pregnant again.
He worked for NASA, I'm sure they could afforded for her to remain in the hospital until properly discharged. He failed his wife, as did anyone close to her.
I myself had Post Partum Depression and was prescribed anti depressants. Over the years, my mental health continued to decline, despite my efforts. I was eventually brought to the hospital in a crisis situation. I was diagnosed with BiPolar 2, stayed in to hospital for treatment and observation.
I have been on mood stabilizers, anti depressants and a bunch of stuff I don't even know (6 in total) Lithium being one of them. I have had 5 rounds of ECT's that unfortunately did not help me.
I will continue to be compliant with my Psychiatrist, take my meds, eat healthy and stay active as best I can. It's hard, so hard.
I am new to your channel, I am enjoying.

PLEASE stop putting distracting background noise on your videos!! I like the content, but it’s distracting and irritating for people with hearing disorders.

Do you mean the sound effects or the background music? Either way, my editor is getting flogged today.

@@APsychForSoreMinds I think it’s sound effects??? If it’s music, the musicians need to be shot. I really love your videos. I’m a retired mental health counselor from America. It’s interesting to get your take on so much. But I’ve tried listening with only one ear bud, hoping the background is only in one ear. Nope.

My take is that Andrea likely would have suffered PPD regardless of her religious beliefs, but the nature of her delusions may have not been as dangerous or scary. Definitely think the religious stuff aggravated things further.

Hi I'm wondering as to whether you can help me with diagnosing this hugely out of character thing that I my self called delirium brought on by trauma to the brain from hypoxia ,severe hypokalemia and the icing on the cake a real medical emergency Due to all the above and hypoglycemia 0.2 mmol's and after and whilst suffering from.all this I ,sorry I mean my friend then thought he was within the same situation as the pizza delivery dude who had, had a bomb strapped.to his chest and would not let the Drs of the a&e dept come near to help me ,sorry help my friend as i did not want to be the one to harm t my colleagues whom I help to access and comfort the mentally ill suffering a crisis a s I thought I was a.walking bomb ready to go off !
This really baffled my medical friends and the psychiatrist that I used to write datix's alongsideand with and also I would commune with these guys !
I would really like too put a name to this frightening ,horrible.experience I had after contracting lung cancer ,diabetes type.1 Addisonian crisis due to steroid treatment and was only saved from exploding in front of my friends legal due to the fact my wife super Sukhi forced a pregablin or 2 = 600 mgs down ones throat but was still a little confused and had to sectioned 136 as I was trying to leave the dept ,canulap aswell!
