  • More than 200 soldiers are taking part in a 3-week tank firing exercise in Bergen Hohne. But when the tanks go to war, one elite team heads the battlegroup. They hide out in woodblocks for days at a time in order to find out exactly where the enemy is hidden. That team is known as Recce Troop...

Everyone's an expert. I spent 17 years with these guys. Finest armoured fighting regiment in the British army.

Ajax is of similar size to the Challenger 2.... So a 'huge' recce vehicle then!

The AJAX has feature creeped quite alot from its original design. But basically the AJAX is an advanced ISTAR platform with decent armour and a gun to pack a punch if it gets in to trouble. Less about hiding, more about seeing your enemy first and relaying that information to friendlies.

Its a 35 ton waste of space....its not a recce veh at all. How can you be stealthy and do your job of spotting and not being seen when the vehicle youre in is a huge target ?

You obviously had a lot to get off of your chest. Do weather comments always make you feel this way.. or just this one?

Elite of the Regiment, not the whole army....i know when i went through my Recce cadre, it was 4 weeks of hell, very little sleep and alot of physical testing. As too the flashing lights....this isnt war , you still need to be safe while training with live rounds. Side note, when i was in afghan, we came into contact roughly 2 miles outside Bastion, got back into bastion, as soon as we went through the gates, our guns still smoking, we had to put high vis vests on and walk the vehs back to our compound...thats how safety minded the military is!

201 left. Been replaced by 589 AJAX vehicles starting this year.

The Ajax is not a tank though. We wouldn't be able to do a desert war again

My bad. I thought you were referring to the CVR. I was saying 201 CVRs are been replaced by 589 AJAX. We will still have two armoured brigades. If AJAX gets a decent ATGM fitted then two armoured brigades mixed with two strike brigades will be a pretty potent mix.
Although losing an armoured brigade is still pretty devastating, and will leave us with a shocking number of active tanks. We have 227 active Challenger 2s currently, so we will lose roughly 1/3 of them. We do however have 120 or more Challenger 2s in storage.
