@@gavinjohnstonmusic I've rambled in other videos about this (and this song as well-- my favorite Weezer track, this particular version at least as there are now even more leaks which rules in its own regard) time and time again, but I'll say it once more... Ric Ocasek took their sound as it was, a grungy but power-pop alt. rock group with a bit of that 90s emo thing going on, and he refined it all a bit too much to the point where I think he was trying to turn them into The Cars of the '90s. I also think Pinkerton was such a failure initially because everyone who jumped on the wagon with Blue were completely thrown off by it at first, expecting Blue 2.0.
To me, they're similar albums as far as songwriting goes. Pinkerton's b-sides are a bit out there and probably thanks to SFTBH being partially why.... Blue demos- - released officially or otherwise (especially this gem which was from the Kitchen Tapes I think, or at least this particular version.... the other is fine for a shorter demo, but this one is unreal) are all great, and I like them more than the final cuts at this point.
I think it's pretty easy to hear the production difference. They're both great albums for different reasons, but I lean on Pinkerton if we're talking studio tracks due to what I mentioned above about Ocasek's production. But if we're talking demos, I could listen to all of the Blue album demos over and over still (and I will sometimes).
I saw Weezer a ton... and the last two times would have been back-to-back nights on the Memories tour. I'd probably see them again if they ever played somewhere other than an arena or huge place with seats (once saw them at Summerfest w/ the pt show they have near me, and I'm in a huge city... arena bullshit. Just not my way to enjoy a band like this when I saw them in smaller places w/ a floor a ton of times thankfully. Still remember tossing my sweater on stage during undone at a show, it was one of the first couple of times I saw them and rivers wrapped it around his microphone stand. Wish cellphone cams were around back then only to see that one moment ...but I guess it was nice when they weren't obstructing all view paths.

That opening riff is just so amazing. gets me everytime. I didnt hear this song until a few years ago, but when I hear it, i feel like its back in the 90s again. it has a sad and dark feel to it, but at the same time, cheerful because of the nostalgia.

is it just me, or is this the most kickass guitar solo they've ever written..
It is one of those pieces of music that rises above what you would normally expect from any song for just that brief period of time. Another one of those from Weezer for me personally has been "Across the Sea" where it all builds up into "how I need a hand in mine to feel." Weezer was truly something special back in the 90's and while most bands fade away etc it's still sad to think of what could have been had Pinkerton not been a commercial disaster.

When I first listened to this, I had no idea what this genre was but it left me craving more. Now, coming back, I realize this a cleaner version of what is known today as Midwest Emo. Makes me think that maybe this was another one of the songs that inspired the Emo trend from the late 90s to still today. Maybe this was the push and Pinkerton was the shove.
I never even thought of it that way, but a lot of this does sound a little like Billy Corgan...

To this day, my favorite Weezer song. The fact it wasn't included on the Blue album deluxe edition is a crime. I have no idea why it has not been released. Rivers seems to bury his best work sometimes. This is literally the best Weezer song that captures both the Blue and Pinkerton eras in one. And it has been my favorite for over 20+ years now.... since the first time I found a bootleg and heard it to be honest. There's something special. And the solo just hits at the right time. There's another demo of it but it's nowhere near this one's energy level or just... anywhere close. Still cool though. Hope more surface...

In an alternate universe I see Weezer consisting of Rivers, Matt, Jason, Brian, and Patrick. Making great record after great record! No Raditude or even the version of Make Believe we got. I see them with a sound similar to this.
@lilol3chrdme the problem is that this captures them as people and musicians from that era. If they re-recorded it now I can almost guarantee it will have no rawness to it like the old Weez. It will be an unadulterated pristine studio copy that Rivers obsesses over. They were the producers of Pinkteron which is why it's so awesome and stripped down. It's just the guys rocking and usually in one take all together with overdubs for solos and vocals. I agree with MarcFuentos, THIS is their sound.

I totally agree with you, I was just spitballing about which song, if you absolutely had to, you would cut of you wanted to keep the ten song album format. Since Weezer seems to like releasing LP's with only ten songs.

This is a Top 5 all-time Weezer song for me. A fully produced studio version on Blue would have been incredible. If they wanted to keep the track list at 10, I would have dropped Surf Wax America. I love that song but it's the weakest track on Blue.

The ones from that demo that are on the delux album is Only In Dreams, Paperface, and Undone-The Sweater Song. Wish they put all the songs in their instead of more live versions.

Fact. Don't know why people keep saying the Green album is bad...there're some quite solid pop rock songs.
There were a couple good songs on the Green Album: Photograph, Island in the Sun, and Crab. The rest weren't good. Hash Pipe was almost as awful as Beverly Hills. Still can't believe Rivers chose those as singles....
My biggest gripe with Green is that, yeah, some of the songs were "good", but every guitar solo on that album is literally just Rivers playing the chorus or verse on guitar instead of singing it. Zero creativity in the solos. In my mind they became a Weezer tribute band on Green. There is something missing in the soul.
