Cabinet Scrapers - get a dry wall joint compound knife and use that for stock - they are inexpensive and the steel has been tempered, but is still workable with a file etc.
Spokeshave - as many have done - make your own... most of us have older 10" or 12" saw blades which cannot be sharpened any longer, but the plates are very nice steel for spokeshave or draw knife, hand knife, marking knife etc. (a stiffer joint compound blade might make a decent marking knife as well)

Hey Mr McGrath.... fellow Irish man here. Sourced some timber is the same place you did. Thanks for that link. I’m having the same problems you had with the UJK Parf system. I think the problem is a round up or round down error that becomes more exaggerated the bigger the table. It’s not the systems fault it’s you and me!!! The pins collar needs to sit into the ruler. But to be fair it’s not easy to ensure that. One mistake and off we go on a wiggly waggily path!! Well done on the channel

If you're trying to get a symmetrical freehanded curve like that John, try getting some plasticard (thin stuff will do grand) - modelling shops like Marks Models will have it as will a lot of arts and crafts places - draw the curve on the plasticard and then cut to the line with an xacto knife, and now you have a template that you can use to draw the curve on one side, then flip it over and draw the same curve on the other side.
Flexible rulers can do it as well, but if you slip and bang the ruler off something while flipping it over it can go sideways and the plasticard can be (a) filed away for replicating it later; and (b) has a straight edge to reference off.

Thank you for taking us on the tool cabinet build. I really appreciate that you dont have every tool, yet you find a way to do the job! This approach reflects more accurately the reality of most hobby wood workers. Also, the use of hand planes to dimension the sapele is a good choice, you were able to show it isnt that hard, the process and a good end result. A couple of suggestions you want to try, 1) put a back bevel on a dedicated plane blade will take care of most of that tear out. 2) the suggestion to use an old saw plate to make a scraper, good video idea for you. The card scraper is better than sand paper for tear out. 3) make your own panel guage, very needed tool that is easy to build, another great video idea.

I built two smaller cabinets of a similar design years ago. They have served me well.
Nonetheless, I wish I had built them in the way you have because your design uses space more efficiently, in my opinion. Terrific tool cabinet!
BTW: I had to smile in sympathy as you recounted your dovetailing error. I have made the same mistake. I, too, have learned that fatigue does not enhance precision. Nice repair.
The sound of your #7 on that sapele is like music to my ears. Sweet! 👍
P.S> If you would like a scrub plane (equivalent) one good way to do it is to get a used Stanley #4 or #5 (my preference) camber the blade edge, and open the mouth a bit with a mill file. This setup works like a charm and it is more versatile and less expensive than either a new or used scrub plane.
A good video project for you might be making a bow saw, which is much better for this type of work than any coping saw.
    Great video. Thanks!

  • @alans1816
    @alans1816 3 года назад

I like your balance between decorative and utilitarian. And that your hand tool use is for fun, so you're ready to use the bandsaw. A turning bow saw would be faster than a coping saw, and a heck of a lot faster than a fretsaw. In the US the Gramercy saw is a good choice, but I'm sure you have good options.
One hand tool comment: I find it liberating that hand tool methods do not require making all faces flat and square. One face, one edge, and the two ends to fit your cabinet would be enough.

I actually don't mind the longer videos. I was just having this conversation the other day about the current younger generation and their need for instant gratification. If we aren't careful no one will take the time to go slow and make things right. I much rather see a good 30-45 min video that a decent 15- 25 min video. Keep them coming my friend.

Good man John!!! Ya have a surface planer and a thicknesser, but still chose to use hand planes......ya legend :) But I dont blame ya for using the bandsaw to cut it out, id do the same if I had one :P Youre bang on right about the finish from a hand plane, theres no grit of sandpaper that gives you a surface like a plane will :) Sapele really is a beautiful wood, its hard and strong, looks good and ages well too........it can be painful to plane with its interlocking grain, but im always happy when I make something with Sapele....it even smells good when ya plane it :P
Enjoyin this series Mo Chara.........I like longer videos too, so make em as long as ya want as far as im concerned :P :)

The other way I have fixed dovetail gaps is with slivers of wood hammered in and planed smooth. Its completely invisible as the texture is end grain and exactly the same as the end grain sides of the drawer front.

Couple of things spokeshaves have you got Facebook or do you know someone with Facebook as on marketplace people selling on their quite regular. Old Stanley is an awesome bit of kit. Use them in Greenwood working. And can I suggest for the carving what about a hand plane a chisel it will tools carved in the plinth that would look really smart I think it look quite quirky.. And you could pencil in a little picture of them 1st to help you you can get quite dipped carving that would look absolutely awesome

Oh, and if you can't buy a card scraper, no worries - grab an old jobsite saw and cut the card scraper out of the sawplate with an angle grinder. It's how they used to get made "back in the day" and it's the best thing to do with old saws that have induction hardened teeth. Plus you can cut the curved-edge-rectangle shape that Schwartz was going on about a while ago (it really does work well). And the rest of the sawplate can be used for scratch stock material : www.stochasticgeometry.ie/2018/07/08/those-five-minute-jobs/
