Building a Tool Chest out of Scrap for an Antique Tool Collection

  • A tool chest for antique tools. I was asked to make a tool chest to display a large collection of antique tools. It's made using materials from an old oak wardrobe, a pine chest of drawers and a mahogany desk. This has been a very complicated build, but it was a lot of fun.

    Oh Man! You are the greatest. A master craftsman. I am 64. If I was made of wood and came to you. You would make me look like a twenty year old. The bad news. If I win the lottery. I am moving next door to you. That way you can build everything I would like. May you live long and prosper Sir. I doff my cap to you.

    The hours of thought and planning it must have gone into this piece before you even started with the wood! Cataloging, inventorying and measuring every piece of your magnificent tool collection. 😮
    To then space plan it all, to fit inside this deceptively simple rectilinear box.

    😲 Oh... My father was a carpenter, and from him I grew a respect and love for woodworking and wonderful old tools that has been with me all my life. When I was living on my own and making my own money, I began to grow a collection of vintage tool like these. I always managed to find small, suitable boxes in which to keep them, and I used some of my old woodworking tools to make Appalachian dulcimers.
    I've always loved those old tools... Alas, I have far fewer these days, than I'd like... Sadly I haven't the room, anymore. I still love the sight of them, though. I wanted to thank you for this build. It's been truly gratifying to watch a master at work. Thank you for having the respect for these fine old tools that you would take such a careful, thoughtful time building such a wonderful chest to house them. 💕

      I think having the pins on the end is more traditional. It’s fine for what you did in this vid, but if you did a single dovetail on a 1X2 with tails out like that, it would act as a wedge and much more easily split? Maybe that’s the British traditional way of doing it?

    There was a time when this is how a journeyman carpenter would advertise himself. Back in the day (not so long ago actually) when someone wanted something built whether a house or some other project you knew how well the project would be completed by how kitted out the carpenter was and how well he took care of his tools. Most,if not all, Journeymen would have a similar in style "journey" case as they traveled around making their living in the wider world.
    Very well curated collection you have.

    • @iratepirate648
      @iratepirate648 2 года назад +1

      I believe the case itself would have been of their own construction. It was the last step on becoming a journeyman, with the apprentice's master evaluating the workmanship to judge whether he was ready to leave his employ, since he was in effect, taking the Master's name and good standing with him.
      George Lucas used the apprentice Jedi's building of their own lightsaber in a similar fashion, although they missed out the journeyman phase which I always thought was a shame. I quite liked the idea of lone Jedi roaming the out rim, brining “peace and justice” to the lawless, to paraphrase Obi wan and 2000AD, but

This chest would sit nicely on top of a wheeled chest *of the same look* that is sectioned off inside for larger items, and with drawers for hardware etc (just a thought). Just brilliant, and I too, like the gentle, relaxing background music. It's great to see you using the tools that will be stored in the chest. I have some similar tools that belonged to my grandfather (b.1880) and think of him when using them.

    It’s so painful to watch someone do things the long, hard way. Yet so mesmerizing. Beautiful workmanship. Painful as it may be to see things done the hard way, don’t change. We need people like you to keep the old ways alive.

    I'm not sure why the almighty algorithm recommended your channel last year, but it wasn't wrong. I like watching your videos. It unfortunately puts some unrealistic expectations in my head when I see my spouse acquire more tools for the house workshop.
