That tool chest, in my opinion, is the epitome of craftsmanship. Building a chest for so many tools of varied shapes and sizes...it's just - inspiring. Then to find items like a Stanley no. 1 inside, among other things...that tool chest is a small hanging museum. So glad I saw this video!

The best part about this in my opinion is that he successfully accomplished the one thing that is the hardest to do. That is he designed and build the box in such a way that forces the viewers eyes to go over and over it because you keep finding something that you didn’t see at first look. Just like Studleys box you have to take some time or you will surely miss things.

He didn't design it with the intention of the viewer
He designed it so his tools all fit and are easy to find
That's why it's so intriguing to look at and easy to spot the tools
It is a beautiful piece of art

I have been doing carpentry since I was five years old, back in 1965 , I have restored hundreds of plane's over the years, I am a qualified professional Carpenter by trade, I have restored hundreds of vintage carpenters tools too, I can never understand why some people get jealous it's just crazy, I have had some nasty things said to me, people just don't understand the work that goes into a tool collection like this, I have had my van broken into 3 time in the past working on a job, I come from a very poor family and work so very hard for everything, thanks for sharing this video it was absolutely amazing, best wishes from England .

I have a respectable collection of antique tools. There are a number here that I have never seen and certainly dont know what they are used for. Amazing collection. There's a lot of money in that tool chest - never mind the exceptionally hard work put into the tool case itself. It would fetch an eye watering price. And gets more expensive every single day. What a great asset.

My man....I had to stop the video and play it again when the one guy said he found a Number 1 Stanley for 10 bucks. That's my dream. To be somewhere at a garage sale and find someone who is selling off tools in grandpa's tool chest. But, if I'm being honest, I don't think I could do that. I'd have to tell the person selling it that it's worth well over a thousand. Returning to the point of this video.....wow that tool chest is special. Thank you for posting this.

I was having the same struggle, my heart wants to say id tell them the price and then make an offer, my bank account wouldn't be able to pay the value, and then my head says, if they are selling an item they should have looked it up first. So why should i do the work for them and make myself pay more? hahaha

I have so much appreciation for this collection but does anyone else wish this chest was used daily instead of on display in the office? I hear what you’re saying but they aren’t exactly the same idea. One craftsman built a cabinet with the best hand tools available to him at “the time” and used them. One craftsman built a cabinet to showcase and preserve some of the best hand tools of “all-time”. I have no doubt that if in 100 years someone goes through the tools he uses everyday, they will be the best available at “his” time.

I've a 1780s chest on chest. In mahogany. Last count, I've found 10 secret compartments. That would be an interesting addition.
The other aspect of these displays is religious. Look up religious diptychs and triptychs. There's certainly a connection between these cabinets and that form of art.
Some of the paintings were designed to be travelling pieces for a personal altar. So you had the doors, and it was only when you opened them up did you see the inner beauty.
That's probably more relevant for the Studley, because of the masonic symbology.@@BatCaveCreations

@@BatCaveCreations I'd like to build one, or two. Other things I like. I like his multiple doors. The other one, there is a limited set of patterns you can apply. Screw drivers, chisels, follow the same pattern. Drill bits, its just a hole. Saws are another pattern, a lift from a saw till.
Magnets mean you don't need the latches. There's a pattern to how the planes are handled. Or two - the horizontal or the vertical. Vertical will a push in and up, then down.
It doesn't as far as I can see have the protrude from one side into a space on the other side.
Holtzapffel is worth researching, they have similar set ups. Search for "Holtzapffel tool cabinet". Their Rose engines are interesting.

It was a little distracting but he was pumped too. I can’t be mad at the dude,he’s probably wanted to see half this stuff in real life for years. He seemed as happy as the owner… win-win.

Just to make it clear: I don't wanna be disrespectful. I think he did an awesome job and is a great guy and a exelent craftsman. But as he is such, I am sure that he knows by himself, that it would be anojing to dig down to the second level every time he has to go for his most used plane. If you work with the tools they have to be accesable. A bit more space between the tools and a just the most frequent tools within armlengt is more usefull than all the tools closly paked. But this is not the topic here. I am just metioning it for potential beginners might think that this might be the ultimate setup for a workshop. IMHO it is not.

I didn't take this disrespectful at all! I understand what you are saying and your correct a beginner should not build this if it will be their main/user tool chest!
