    Tennis Serve Lesson: How To Create Racket Control On The Ball
    John Craig, USPTA Elite Professional, discusses how to CONTROL the racket on the serve all the way through the contact zone.
    The grip in the serve setup, it relates to the racket face on contact. The reset of your hands is important because the wrist you have at the beginning of the service motion is very similar to the point at contact. This relationship can help you find your motion to contact. With the serve, you must feel everything is smooth and clean. After the trophy position, there is a lot of racket dorp but you should not feel like your racket is fidgeting around a lot. Your shoulder should help you feel how your racket rotates into contact.
    Your racket face, for the most part, should still face your target on contact. Great long axis rotation on the serve will also help your racket control on the serve. The racket comes on edge and then rotates into contact.
    Play less with the wrist and forearm, and more with the long axis rotation to contact.

    John - your videos are pure gold. They have helped me fix my serve after years of playing and struggling to hit consistently, and accurately, it is finally clicking after watching your videos and trying to fix serve on my own. It is working now.
    I hope you offer clinics on the serve and other strokes and play (after the pandemic), that I can attend.

    My biggest problem with the serve is tossing the ball too late, giving my racket too much time which causes major glitch, grip change etc. Any suggestions to have a standard Ball Toss? You could give me a million dollars and it wouldn't change my current motion. I can do a great service motion with my racket without the ball all but incorporate the ball it's chaos. I do have a fair to good 3.5 pushy serve.

    “And you’re not just guessing or hoping to control the ball” yup that’s me sometimes hehehe

  • @jackquinnes
    @jackquinnes 4 года назад +1

    The control should be enhanced by a firmer grip/wrist setting also in the serve motion, less so with the power part as it is the case with all strokes of tennis, more or less (less maybe with BH slice). There are thus two main types of ATP serve motions as regards the wrist: The spaghetti ”westerns” who use a loose wrist like cooked spaghetti and thus add the whip effect and power into their serves; see e.g. Monfils, Karlovic and Hurkacz, maybe Nole ( still). The other camp prefers a firmer wrist thus presumably achieving greater control/accuracy in serving. I think that is the main reason the characteristically loose Mr. Roger Federer isn’t that loose in his serve grip. He is more known of accuracy and placement, superb control in his serve than of its ultimate power and speed. Go figure. Study the serve in your own biomechanics and become a master of the craft.

      Good observation and comparison, Jack. Please keep in mind that I WILL ALWAYS lean to the basics here on RUclips...focusing on the fundamental skills and concepts that will enable the majority of viewers to receive useful information to build from.

    • @jackquinnes
      @jackquinnes 4 года назад +1

      @@PerformancePlusTennis Sure, John. I must add now though another observation. There might be a correlation (positive one) between the platform serve and the firmer type of serving grip; also, the platform serve might be more accurate while this increase in control costs a respective trade-off in power as compared to the pinpoint serve. Thank you.

      @@jackquinnes Great comment, and I believe you are correct. But at the end of the day, I will take the accuracy over the marginal increase in power. Thanks for your interest in the channel. We have more interesting videos coming, and welcome your input!

    Not sure I understand what you mean “long axis of the shoulder”

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  Год назад

      Hi Michael, Thanks for your great question. It simply means the pronation is coming primarily from the entire arm rotating from the shoulder vs. the wrist as is commonly believed.
      Let me know if you have additional questions.Thanks, John
