What elegance class style and sound. American Classical Music at its best. This is what it was like every Sunday night growing up in the 60’s into the 70’s. Jazz Pop Motown Broadway Rock Classical all represented by the best of each genre. Now there are the kardashians how far we have fallen.
This is a classic LIVE performance of two jazz legends. As far as I know they NEVER released an album together. CBS really "screwed up" by NOT recording many of these Sullivan performances on 4 (or 8) ch studio recording equipment. Everyone was so focused on TV and video that they lost sight of the audio quality. Exactly the opposite of what the Grateful Dead did.
Oh, Yeah! It doesn't get any better than Ellington playing Ellington! And Tony Bennett's unique vocals add another layer of richness to these jazz masterpieces. And you've gotta love those sets!
I don't know if it was planned that way or if it was just a coincidence. Duke's jacket and Tony's shirt are the same color as the blue used on the stripes on the set. Thank you for sharing! 💖
Wow,wow, this is artistry on display, in action. Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, and that big band, This is as good as it could get. We do not see that kind of artists, performances anymore. Rest in peace Tony and 'Duke'.
one of my favorite songs by Tony....Solitude......try to give a listen to Tony singing it on his 62 live at Carnegie Hall album....one of the best live albums in all of pop music history....
You sure that's Sonny Payne? Actually looks like Rufus 'Speedy' Jones. Without a doubt, its one of two, as they were both with Duke and Basie around this time. The drummer here looks more like Jones to me, however.
@@waldolydecker8118 It's Sonny... Rufus was a much more Burly looking man and he wore glasses which this drummer has on. I thought the same but getting a closer look at the video it looks like Sonny. Plus rufus played double bass drums

You were the last of the greats still on Earth. May your soul resplend with delight like you have been delighting us!
@@henridelagardere264 I tell you, friend, over the past 10 years, there's been very few things that lift my mood. The music of Mr. Bennett, Mr. Ellington, Mr. Sinatra, Mr. Basie, Mr. Cole, and their contemporaries are such reasons. Your eloquent, humorous, and thoughtful comments are another. It's obvious you're a highly-intelligent, dignified, and kind person with an appreciation of exceptional music and cinema. If you ever need your cable fixed, I am always at your service.
Thanks for Tony and Duke! However, I also must say, and I apologize for kvetching again, but I'm really disappointed by the lack of uploads lately. Two uploads a day isn't very much, and as a result, we aren't getting a variety of rare music performances to pick from like we were before. I hope things will get back on track, as there are hundreds of musical performances left I really want to see, which I have never seen before. I'm glad you are still posting though and I hope you never stop until we see all the music (even though I know not everything will be posted).
Tom, I'm so sorry to bother you, but we need you. We are all confused on todays post of Anna Maria Alberghetti. Ed Sullivan Show posted a title of the song, but a subscriber says, it's a different title. We are lost without you. I hope you can get to listen to it and maybe you could clear up this mystery. Thank you so much. 💖
@@that70sgirl90 It's no bother at all! I like to help out! Feel free to ask me anything at anytime. Yes, the person is right, they used the wrong song title for the video. "O mio babbino caro" is a much different song.
@@TomElvisSmith Thank you so much. Not that I didn't trust him, but someone posted they thought babbino meant baby. That's why we were all confused. Although the song she was singing was bright and cheerful. When I looked up the title it said, it was about a family fued over her wanting to marry a man , they didn't want her to marry. Sounded almost like "West Side Story"... only in an Italian setting. I knew the one person I could go to was you! Thanks again!! 💖
2:02 WTF was that.. I've never seen a singer from that era hit that vocal note so easily.. It doesn't look like it, but it's really hard to hit that note man..
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe Duke and Tony ever recorded together. Sinatra and Ellington did an album and Ella with Duke too.
I weep for a world that will never encounter this calabre of talent again.
Duke and Tony. Two of the best at what they did or do. What a composer/songwriter/pianist Duke was.
Two of my hero’s . ❤

This is impossible not to love. Two musical giants at their best.
The Duke was the most relaxed piano performer off the whole scene
Swingin' Love Song! That Duke is fantastic on the piano. The use of color on the sets was Spectacular! Thank you for sharing! 💖
Rest in heavenly peace, Mr. Bennet!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I recognize , the voice of Mr.Tony Bennett looks powerful 'like these days' God bless Tony!.😍😍😍

I'm so blessed to have seen Tony Bennett 3 times!
And what about that praise from Duke at the end?! I'm sure it meant so much to Tony.
Love you tube for being able to hear this music.

Duke's son, Mercer Ellington, is in the trumpet section. He's third from the left.
Cool info! Thanks.
Correct. He never took solos!
The best of the best! Eternal life!
blessed the man who has the Duke playing behind his back and who has these musicians behind him to support him...
Amazing
The Era of the Masters !
¡Muchas gracias por compartir esta presentación del grandioso maestro Duke Ellington y el inigualable Tony Bennett! ¡Saludos desde México!

R.i.p sir Tony Bennett 😥
God Bless Tony Bennett!
The Duke is king man
He was making that piano talk. Lovely.
the great Sonny Payne on drums one of my idols Played with Basie and Woody Herman among others.

Beautiful comment. Very well said.
Getting this appreciative reply by a real expert honors me. Tony and Duke had the power to delight even nihilists.

When they did it for the quality of it, the charm of it, the style of it, vs how much money they could scam out of the industry.

True tenor Tony's high note, followed by Cat Anderson's stratospheric trumpet notes.

Check out the TV special with Tony and Lena Horne if you can find it. Excellent.
