The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is SOLID GOLD!! As soon as my 84-year-old father heard the trumpet from upstairs, he asked, “Is that Satchmo??!!” Respect!!
I pity people - and it's the vast majority of Americans - who don't know this exists, that these greatest of American musicians ever even lived. What a gift having this on video is.
@@BarracusObamus , you'd be shocked by how few people would. There is a guy in my church who is a 24 year old doctoral student in chemistry at Notre Dame. He's not just a science nerd, either. He had never heard of Lucille Ball when I mentioned her in conversation with him a few weeks ago.
I'm an old white guy now and I tried desperately to play piano for ten years when I was young. Later I learned I was terrible at math beyond basic algebra and basic geometry. It made me feel better (and more in awe) of musicians as its all mathematics. God bless these fellows for sharing their talents with the rest of us.

I agree with you. The dumbing down of the culture is pretty much complete.
But what's worse is that the lessons of WW2 have also been relegated to ancient history, thus setting the stage for a repeat of it.
Amen brother!!
I grew up with this kind of thing, on tape, on long journeys in the car...
Now I have good speakers, mixer et - Input/output is sorted... Now it's the recordings that let ALL of us down :(
THANK Dog FOR SKA! At least Ska gets redone regularly...
I DARE YOU - REDO BIGBAND!!!
(Yes, you...)
The Duke's erudite, sophisticated, cerebral, and wholly urbane style married with the exuberant, joyous, lyrical, jaunty gumbo tones of Louis Armstrong = an unlikely match made in heaven!
Both Duke and Louis are superstars, yet they give the other artists their own solos! Very classy!
Well yeah, that's what Duke Ellington is all about. He writes specifically for those in his band and how they play. He gives everyone a piece of the action.
It's like watching Beethoven and Mozart performing together on the same stage!
Oh, yes! That's right!
Indeed, 2 of the big 5 on one stage! Coltrane, Davis and Parker being the others.
Amen!!!
@@johnmc3862 how about fats waller?
@@clemleg123 A giant too
These guys didn’t play music. They WERE music.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 beautiful statement!!!!!!!!
I'm stealing that line
For me Louis and Duke are the two biggest names in the jazz history. This presentation is fantastic!
Ok, but don't forget the outstanding Count and Oscar !! Cheers !😀
When I was just a child in the late 50s early 1960s my mom had a huge record collection that consisted of Duke ellington, Louis armstrong, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan and the list went on and on and on. She gave me a better musical education than I ever got in college and is the reason why I became a musician 55 years ago! Rest in peace mom and thanks for the memories! ❤
Mums know best 🥰
Sounds like mama knew what she was doing. Good for you!
Amazing mom you had, but you know that. Lucky you. ❤
I hear that. My dad took my brother an I to a Harlem Globe Trotters basketball game at Southwestern College in Point Loma in 1962. I was 8. Cab Calloway came out to mid court for halftime and accompanied himself on this beat up electric piano to "Minnie the Moocher." I knew that song from my mom's record collection and it was clear that most the crowd was familiar with the song as well. While all the other kids flooded the court after the game to get their favorite Globe Trotter's autographs. I spotted Cab over at the Globe Trotter's bench and went over to tell him how much I enjoyed his song. He flashed that world famous smile of his at me and enthusiastically shook my hand and asked me if I had heard his music before. I shook my head in the affirmative-too star-struck to say anything. I finally mustered the strength to say, "My mom has your record and I listen to it all the time." He put a hand on my shoulder and told me, "thank your mom for sharing my music with you." That was 60 years ago and I feel so blessed and privileged to have had that moment with a Cotton Club legend. Thank you, mom. I sure miss you.

Can you imagine what a ticket would cost to see these two legends today???
Two gentlemen of talent! What a scene of them playing together. Thank you.
I'm from Brazil, and in my country the majority of the people don't know that Heitor Vila Lobos exist, imagine these international geniuses.
Trummy Young (tb), Joe Darensbourg (cl), Billy Cronk (b), Danny Barcelona (dr)
Never scene before
Thank you
Thanks Bernard ...
@@swordfish52 My pleasure!
So was that Louis' band at the time? Wish I could see them a little better. Do you have a source to that info? Would really appreciate
Louis Armstrong toured Africa in 1960. He performed in Kenya, Congo, Nigeria, and Ghana.
Louis Armstrong the greatest jazz musician that ever lived.
Don't know if it was Sullivan or CBS that kept these beautiful videotapes...but I am grateful nonetheless.
CBS certainly didn't. They'd save a few tapes here and there- but their ultimate goal was to either "wipe" them for future use......or toss them out. It was Ed (and his son-in-law Bob Precht) who saved the bulk of his tapes and kinescopes, and kept them "in storage".
@@fromthesidelines Similar to what I understood Johnny Carson did (keep the tapes).
He only kept *his* tapes- the ones he produced for NBC- from 1972 on. Many of the 1962-'72 telecasts were either "wiped" or tossed out by NBC.
Two of the greatest modernists of the 20th century together. Louis? simply the greatest. Dook? The greatest songwriter of the last hundred years. And how do you get look like Duke Ellington? The coolest man on the fucking planet.
Back when the US had classy art to offer. These both Kings.
Not only a classic, but historic! Thanks for uploading!
Happy Birthday to the Duke, DC represent!
Hey I'm 61 and I can remember tuning my transistor radio to the station playing this
Respect
From the people who created modern American music. Fantastic.
This show would have come after Duke (born in 1899) and Louis (born in 1901) recorded in a studio together for the first time on April 3 and 4, 1961. With Duke at the piano and Louis and his All Stars, they played 17 Ellington songs that were released in ‘61 on two record albums.
I'm only 22 🤦 dis my shit 💯
Two distinguished and classy Black men ❤
The Gods😭
Oddly enough, the first time I ever heard this song was as the bumper music at the very beginning of the Howard Stern show in the early 1990s.
A new form of music called JAZZ was gieven to the world by AFRO MASTERS, I LIVE IN INDIA FROM MY TENTH STANDARD ONWARDS I USE TO LISTEN THE JAZZ HOUR IN VOICE OF AMERICA. NOW I AM 67 YEARS. STILL GOT MANY JAZZ GRATES.
Jazz gods. Everything is so good about this, you almost start crying.
Its like watching Yoda and Obi-wan playing together ! All that's missing now is the great lady Ella to sing along!
Geniuses together.
Louie had incredible range. Rarely spoken of.. but trumpeters know.. 🎺
Hello Welcome to another video an how to get in love with jazz
My dear Duke and Louis! You've made a great tandem. I am proud of both of you. It's a shame that in my time there are no such wonderful performers, but there is one one-day pop. You are names for all time.
And to you, Duke, I personally say. If I were Frank Sinatra's contemporary, I would like to sing a duet with him, accompanied by your jazz band, at least a jazz version of the song "Sunny", written by Bobby Habb.
This is unbelievably good music.
yes it is top jazz
What a lucky audience, better times for sure 👍 👏
Not for Black Americans. These great musicians lived most of their lives under segregation laws & Jim Crow conditions.
@@mitcharett2586 - many of them lived their ENTIRE lives under that backwardsness...in fact, it was instrumental in killing many of them prematurely - if not just from the 24/7 mental fatigue of constantly having to battle a rigged system designed specifically to keep them "in their place."
@@waldolydecker8118 True.
They lived their lives, though, and had some good times. But they never got the credit & recognition that they deserved. Or the money that they deserved for doing their thing. And much of America, especially White America, missed out on their brilliance, style, and music.Racism costs us all.
yeah for whites only
It's funny a not so talented white man made sure these black artists were seen and heard all across America, and yet there is still a divide. I guess some people will never move on from a bad time and enjoy life, it's very short.
I watched The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights growing up. It was fabulous seeing all these incredible artists. So nice to watch these videos now that I’m pushing 70.
Jazz Perfection!😀
The royalty of the U.S music.
Absolute talent. Dont make them like this anymore. Thank you! Xxx
A Sunday morning waking up at the crack of dawn. You’re favorite beer in hand and a Newport, and a shot of whiskey on the side.
Crazy historic moment right here…
I was in diapers when this show aired...but look at Ed...he loved Jazz!
This is huge. I’m not sure if we even deserve it
This is a real America !
You will never watch 2 giants like them, NEVER !
Duke and Pops are both on a list I indulgently put together of posthumous Kennedy Center Honors, our knighthood. Both fell a few years short of even getting a nod.
look @ the Duke… just fiddling and playing with the Piano ! Unbelievable talent !
Duke & Satchmo , the Best of the World . Thanks
Feeling blessed to watch this. Pure talent. Real musicians
Back when, I would have thought more of the Duke as a jazz musician. I didn’t realize that Louis was from the original generation of jazz musicians.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to show this to my students so they can see these great musical giants performing together.
this is the the best thing I'VE EVER SEEN
Greatest Jazz session ever recorded. R.I.P. Gang.
They were mountains of greatness.
True musicians
I always love watching Louies face because it shows how truly passionate he was about the music :)
I always loved his big smile.
Man this is awesome, Louis Armstrong is really enjoying himself watching the other solos
The great reunion👍❤❤
Louis Armstrong is a very talented singer and he has this magical voice and lyrics that I love ❤️ his song will never be forgotten.. So tell me how long have you been listening to Armstrong song?
Now, this is wonderfull Jazz! ❤
Louis Armstrong's solo is perfect!!
Am incredible fact about
Ellington is that, contrarily to Armstrong, he never became outdated or decadent while growing old.
_Hello!_
_Thank you for the provided music!_
Hats off to Ed Sullivan for giving these two mega talents a huge forum to perform on when most white entertainment shows wouldn't .... This is RUclips gold!!!
Pity he can't pronounce one of their names correctly. Racist jerk

Beautiful execution!! Just like an addition of music of excellence plus New Orleans Era Band.
I'm Australian, and my parents loved Louie Amstrong and Duke. So we got plenty of this growing up amongst various types of music
Louis' solos are poems.
Wow! I never saw Duke in person, but Pops came back to our hometown New Orleans a few times before he passed. Two musical geniuses on one stage. Too short, but quite telling.
The best Music wow 💕💕
I genuinely feel sorry for people that have never heard what the best of music has to offer. Jazz is the king, Jazz is the thing that folks, dig, mooost!

I remember hearing a duet from them that came out in the late 40's, Drop Me Off in Harlem. This had to be quite a treat for the audience on The Ed Sullivan Show back in 1961. Thanks for sharing!
