Truly wonderful video comparison. Blue seems very close to Purple, just a tad cleaner. Very curious how it will do after it has a bunch of games on it. So don't touch it just like you don't touch your purple and maybe do a follow up video showing how the performance has changed on Blue compared to Purple. Also, thank you for your urethane play teaching comments as well.
From the videos I've seen of this ball, I agree that it's one everybody should have. One thing I've noticed is a very high carry percentage on pocket hits. Quite remarkable for a ball that's intended to replace a urethane ball. Great work, Hammer!
Hopefully, we can get a demo at one of my centers soon so I can give this NU a roll. I'm very content with the Pink Widow urethane. If it rolls as good as that one does, I'll pick one up.
Having a urethane going a bit longer isn't necessarily a bad thing. I say that as a rev dominant slower speed bowler that mainly throws urethane. I put polish on my urethane balls so that way they dont burn up and force me left. The smoother surface means i can keep my slow speed and use the smoothness of the urethane, but just keep it further down the lane. I find it very useful.
You said "I never touch my Purple Hammer -- l think it's a sin. I don't adjust surface, I don't do nothin' to it." I take that to mean no Abralon (or other sanding) pads, no polish, etc. But you DO clean it, right? If yes, what cleaner do you use? And how long (how many games) can it go without any surface 'touch-up'? Forever?
I have literally never touched it or cleaned it this year. I may have lightly scuffed it at USBC Nationals one block with a 1500 pad. That’s it. The Purple holds it surface so well so I leave it alone.
@@iceman5117 I mean unless you have a rev rate of less than 270 RPMs then it might not be your best option but if you're over that you can definitely use this ball.
@@elr2141979 the ball is going to move no matter how you throw it. Your rev rate is just going to tell you when to throw it. Low flaring, strong cover balls like this are excellent for lower rev players, because they're easier to get down the lane from the outside with control
Hey, Nick! Is there a USBC regulation regarding the amount of plasticizer a ball must have to be considered a reactive ball? Or, do all reactive balls contain the same amount? Ronald Hickland did an oil absorption test on these two balls as well as a Purple Reactive to show the differences between all 3. Is it possible that the amount of plasticizer in the NU is lighter than a typical reactive but obviously more than the truer urethane? Same thought process as the particle balls of the 90s. Some had a lighter load and some had a heavier load. To me, this could explain why the NU still rolls like a urethane but absorbs oil at a much slower rate than a reactive. But I have been wrong before and this is simply just a guess.
For USBC, so long as it doesn’t absorb oil in the standardized test in less than 2 minutes, it’s legal. For PBA, over 45 minutes and it’s considered urethane and must be 78 hardness or above.
Nick, I found a layout I kind of like where my pin is in the ring finger... it's 70x4x50. If I was going urethane, or urethane-like, would I probably wanna avoid something like that because I intentionally want more flare? I haven't thrown a urethane in 30 years
Hey nick, you feel like this one shines up faster than a purple? I’m like you, I generally do like 360-1000 on my purples and then I don’t touch them. Seems like when they get a little shine on them they kinda continue more
Nothing different or special. Clean it, wipe oil off, refresh the surface when needed. Since it isn’t urethane, you’ll need to upkeep surface to keep it dull more regularly.
@@brunsnick Thank you! Love your videos. I just bought my first purple, which I haven't even put holes in yet, and I will pick up a NU to experiment with them.
And also Nick, since you work for Brunswick, tell them to re-release the Mastermind Intellect and Scholar (with the original Honor Roll A+ Coverstock) , the Vintage Danger Zone and Petraglia LT-48. I'll buy all four the same day. That was the best arsenal I ever owned. I know a LOT of people who are begging for those back. Thanks in advance 🤣❤
The radical innovator is the ball you're looking for if you want the old masterminds back. I don't know why you want an old rubber ball. Your pro certainly doesn't, considering how much they stink up the shop
@@iceman5117 The "Vintage Series" LT-48. Came out roughly 10 years ago. It was a reactive, not the old rubber one. 🤣 In that series, they also did the Danger Zone and the Gold Rhino Pro.
Hammer definitely missed a marketing opportunity here. This ball should have been called the "FU" (Faux Urethane) Blue Hammer, not "NU" (Not Urethane). It's not Hammer's fault the Purple Hammer is so dominant that now the rules have to change. Hammer should have given them the big FU! 😜
It is worth mentioning that the Purple Hammer is legal AROUND THE WORLD, not just in the USBC. That shows you the little footprint the PBA has on the sport of bowling around the world. It is still legal I. The JPBA, KPBA, PABCON, European leagues, and everywhere else. The PBA is small beans compared to the world.
Except that the pba is the top tier of it all. As far as numbers go, then yeah, it's minor. I personally think the PBA is just trying to get ppl to move around again rather than rely on one type of ball for a whole block. Note: I have like 4 or 5 urethane or urethane-like balls, so I like both technologies.
@@joshh3105 you should see some of the international tournaments. There are just as high quality bowlers NOT in the PBA as there are in the PBA. Just because we only see the PBA in the US doesn’t mean that they are the highest tier. I’ve seen better performance on some tournaments in the JPBA than I’ve seen on the PBA.. and less complaints about balls being used, since they have a higher selection of balls they can use versus the PBA. Good example: you can not use any ball released overseas in the PBA.
Another great video on the nu ball

I have 2 more follow up videos coming soon. 👍🏻
Yes I would like to know also will this blue have the same effects on the oil and lane conditions after several games
Very excited for this one! Already told the wife that I want one for Christmas 😁

PBA banned the Purple Hammer because it struck TOO much!!
Thank you Nick. This was a very helpful review/comparison. Just what the doctor ordered.
Just waiting for mine to show up. Put in my PBA order the day it was announced. Can't wait to try it.

Excited to see how the NU ball rolls for the pba tour players

Great Video Nick!
Great video as always! Going to order one of these!
The purple is just so beautiful aesthetically as well
Heyyyy Nick, any chance of doing a comparison against the Pink Widow Urethane?
Maybe. It’s a better comp to Purple though.
I’m new to bowling which one should I get?
Will Hammer continue to make the purple pearl after this year? If so, will the hardness remain the same or will it be increased to at least 78?
Yes. Purple Urethane will still be made as-is for time to come. It’s one of these most popular selling ball of all time. Still 100% USBC LEGAL

I want the NU so bad for some reason but I'm not sure if I have the revs to make use of a urethane
I'm not the most high rev player by any means, just find some friction and throw it right up it!
It's not urethane 🙄
Why do you think you need revs for urethane?

I really like the videos. Great variety of subjects. Just one thing... having a thumb insert in each ball already would be a little smoother 👍
Maybe! I’m a 1 thumb guy with an emergency thumb in the bag. Plus, people ask about the system so I can talk about that too.

I'm wondering how much this will differ from the Burgundy Hammer. I have one and all the vids I've seen so far of Nu Blue remind me of the Burgundy.
Idk sorry never had that one.

Is NU Blue Hammer great for a finesse player (non power) player. 🙂
Yes. 👍🏻
Is the NU Blue Hammer an Asymmetric core? 🙂
No

how does it compare to the purple reactive
Slower. Less overall hook.

It does lane shine more than purple since it’s not urethane.
When i throw my purple i feels it gets lazy down lane. After a few games with NU blue. Its almost exactly what i wanted from it

Maybe something like Acryllium, aka Ebonite Omega ca. 1992? 😁
