To say that I love Kenzie is an understatement, she is so darn funny watching her run around! Love their to pieces! And Temple, she’s an amazing, smart and educated lady that has pushed the animal husbandry to new and high standards! Love your videos and your love for your sheep and farming!

Temple Grandin is a wonderful lady!!! Her process of going through the gates, shoots or whatever you call them. Make the sheep feel completely at ease because that’s what they are used to doing. When they go through the gates at the slaughterhouse (I hate saying slaughterhouse it sounds barbaric ) they have no fear. Temple’s process is so humane they feel relatively no pain.

You really have a feeling for how the lambs will act. Some never gain that feeling, that interaction. Temple Grandin is one of my hero's and I have read most of her books. Her handling techniques make so much sense. If only more animal owners would stop and watch what the animals do naturally. Kudos to you once again for being on track.

Sandi, I was reminded of your comments on Kinsey running aaround whenever you're using your handling system - our dog was great as long as he had something to do, as in a command. We used hand signals that we learned from a book called "Good Owners - Great Dogs." Even a command to SIT (particularly if you teach her a hand signal for that, so you won't have to call out over the top of the lambs on weening day :-) Or maybe there could be a command, "Guard & Sit" - just a thought. Your lambs look beautiful!!! Yours in Gratitude

Some of your older lambs already in the barn reminded me of teenage boys with their voices cracking when they baa. Cracked me up. I used to teach at a reassignment school and every now and then some of the older "boot camp" kids would make a run for it outside. We used to do the run Forrest run for them. I loved it when the lamb made a break. Looked just as bewildered at some of the knot heads who ran.

My grandfather was telling me yesterday how he found a weaning bucket that he used when he was in his teens (81 now) and that no one knew what it was until he explained. It had a 7 inch hook on the bucket so when they jumped at it to get it the bucket didn’t fall. It was so funny to hear him and then see how you do it. He mentioned leave feed out and slowly seeing them eat less milk and more feed gone.

Ah, my lamb fix. It is kind of embarrassing how hooked I am on your videos, Sandi. Love the podcast, too. I volunteer at our local zoo and spend a fair amount of time in the goat and sheep barn - the area where visitors can interact with the little critters. Mainly small goats because they are less intimidating for young children, and if truth be told, some adults. We have a flock of Jacob's sheep with the most amazing wool and horns. They are very quiet and generally keep to themselves, unlike the goats, who are into everything. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Yup they are LOUD. Our lambs are field weaned. We set up 'lamb lounge' at the side of the field with lamb only gates. We work at getting most of the lambs in creep area. Then block the gate. What ever lambs are still with mama, we crook them out and put them in 'lamb lounge'. We do this a couple of days ahead of the broker coming. This way we can judge if they are eating drinking well before Pete gets there. Bottle babies are in the barn until we move everybody in the creep. They get moved to creep too. They have had grain, pellets and hay in their pens. They are eating well too.

Aww, it does hurt the heart to see the mommas looking and calling, but this is just reality. I’ve seen other weaning days both on your farm & others, and I’m not sure if it’s my imagination or what, but this one seems to have gone the smoothest. Reality seems to be that the ewes tend to accept it faster, especially the more experienced moms.
Definitely doesn’t go that way all the time...we had a Nubian Nanny that was the sweetest, most gentle girl in the world, who was an amazing momma, and she was always totally fine with her babies being handled...until weaning day rolled around. Then it would take 6 big men to wrangle JUST her alone. Didn’t matter that she’d been kicking her kids away from nursing for a couple weeks, the moment she saw the trailer backing up to the gate, all hell broke loose. I was always just so grateful she didn’t have horns, but man could she do damage with those teeth, feet & that thick skull oh hers without them. That SUPER protective drive made her invaluable as a momma when it came to keeping her babies safe, but hooboy- when she’d turn it on us, we were in TROUBLE! 😂👍
Weirdly enough, once the kids were loaded and moved, within a day she was completely chill & didn’t even call for them. I was always so glad when she’d have doe kids that we’d planned to keep, as then she didn’t have to be separated from them, and we could leave them be. Abby was an amazing little goat, and although she passed away from old age almost a decade ago, I still miss her. A lot of our current females are her direct descendants though, and every year we get at least two or three that are her splitting image & temperament.
This weaning day ROCKED Sandi - you two ladies did amazing!!

These ewes have been through more than one weaning. They probably couldn't wait to have some _peace and quiet!_ We'll see how they are the next day. Lol
