Josh & Erin, 24 minute mark to close is exactly why I support this channel as a patron, why I look forward to each pick you two do, and speaks to the best parts of this whiskey culture thing. It cannot be easy balancing work, family and creative content. You two are appreciated and unite thousands of people with similar interests. Rather remarkable gift when you think about it. Entertaining, educational, relevant.
With Erin not able to get through the ethanol punch to access the flavor, there's nothing wrong with adding water until you start sensing through the burn. Not everyone can tolerate a 130+ proof, but may have no trouble once it's in the lower 120's. People say it 'opens up', but in my experience, adding a little water can bring a big proofy pour into your own proof sweet spot where your palate can differentiate the flavors! I can handle the 130's, but have been enjoying my JDSBBPs with a touch of water and have surprisingly enjoyed them even more!
JDSBBPs are a pour well often add water to. Younger high proof pours seem to really benefit from water to tame some of the ethanol heat at times, although recently on a few barrel picks we found the proofed down version to be markedly better from cask strength in texture and mouthfeel. We usually don’t add water to higher end bottles as we’ve found it too often diminishes the experience (for example here the heat wasn’t getting to Erin, she just wasn’t picking up specific flavor notes, but was enjoying the overall experience).
@@stuffandwhiskey Good point! I get you on adding water to special pours...it's tough to alter those! I've got a 2022 GTS and have never tamed it down. Thanks for the great content...hoping to create my own little blind pool for my wife and I soon. Already have the sample bottles and plenty of whiskey!
I spent $400 on a Russell’s 15 just recently. Yes it’s secondary, but on the low end of secondary and this might have been my only chance to get one. I would pay the same for a GTS or a KOK, maybe even go as high as $500. Like you said at the end of the video, sometimes you just gotta pay to play.
Took me a long while to come around to this point of view, but I made it (after spending thousands at local stores just to get the “privilege” to buy a couple of bottles at slightly inflated prices instead of full secondary…then I did the math and figured out full secondary on the bottles I wanted most was actually far cheaper than all the money I’d spent on middling bottles).
I've only ever had samples of these pours and without reading the comments, I knew which was which by the notes you were giving😂 Great match up. Cheers!
Cheers and thanks for the kind words! With you back in the promised land we’ll be sure to give you a shout the next time we’re up that way for a barrel pick!
I've occasionally - even with whiskies I've gotten specific notes on previously - tasted something and could only say, "It tastes like whisky.". Usually this happens with lower quality juice (e.g. Jim Beam white, Jack Daniel's black), but sometimes it's happened with stuff I. The palate can be extraordinarily fickle. 🙂 Just FWIW, when I have a cold it makes all whiskey taste wrong. But when I'm having an IBS attack my palate still works, though if it's really bad I just don't want any whisky. Ordinarily, though, whisky seems to settle my stomach...which makes me wonder whether Timothy had IBS. 🙂
Had a pour of the GTS 23 and it was a great experience. Have never tried KOK nor will I just out of my price range even as a bar pour. The GTS was 30 which is my cap anything over that and I’m out.
Nice review! I had a GT Stagg 2023 and it was hot and really not that flavorful until it was half gone:( I also missed a King of Kentucky yesterday at BevMo (400.00)by three minutes:( Cheers!
For some weird reason I get an overwhelming potting soil flavor in GTS 2023 & 2024. Disappointing. But I didn’t get it on the 2022. Another channel also got the potting soil flavor and explained it as a genetic marker, similar to the cilantro flavor, which I also can’t stand.
Interesting. It’s gotta be something since so many comment on how much they dislike 2023 GTS. We’ve tried a few bottles now from freshly popped to the last few ounces and they’ve all been awesome. A bit off profile from typical GTS to be sure, but that makes it more unique and interesting in our book.
When I had the kung flu back in 2020 I wasn't drinking whiskey. But twice since I started in September of 2021 I've had a cold, and it messed with my palate both times.

Thanks so much for the kind words Mark! We appreciate it and we appreciate you!
Erin is having one of those “I can’t taste it” days. Always frustrating when those days happen. Happens to me every once in a while.
From 24:00 on, some of the most important conversation in whiskey right now. Thank you for keeping things in perspective.
This was a brilliant video.
I enjoyed the explanation at the end.
I totally understand the sharing experience.
Erin saying how generous their bourbon community is, while she won’t share her KOK pour with Josh even though it’s a “just ok pour” for her. 😂
😂😂😂 gotta love it!
@ 💯
Great show as always! Cheers!

I paid 70 bucks for coy hill yesterday and that whiskey slays. They’re the king right now
They’re the king of value for sure
Two bangers...enjoy!

My wife's birthday is 1600 for the dinner. So King of Kentucky here I come. 🤣
I like the value perspective! I remember your rating system given previously.
Two of the best ever ... and the bourbons both check the box too. 🙂
Great content on two spectacular pours. Miss you guys.

@@stuffandwhiskey count on it. I’m there. 👍

That's so interesting. We've definitely all been there with that "it tastes like whisky" moment!
Erin staking the high ground.... "I see your infatuation..."

That’s a great price for a pour of GTS!

Oh man, that’s gut wrenching to miss it by that much!
I love to see Josh so excited about a matchup! Erin, consider getting checked for Covid since your tastebuds are obviously out of commission😂
I think it’s not that she couldn’t taste, it’s that her taste buds were overwhelmed.
Did I understand that you were going to get a bottle of GTS from Bill and Delia and ask us over to share it with you?? 😜27:12
Find yourself a Foursquare rum "Touchstone." All the flavor at 1/3 the cost. I guarantee you will not be disappointed
We have and love Touchstone!
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
I’d be willing to bet that the guy who purchased the GTS got a WAYYYY better deal on his bottle than the guy who bought the King of Kentucky.
😂😂

Great blind
Erin just realizing she might have Covid (Jk). I remember trying to have bourbon when I got sick. Nothing but woody water on the palette.
