The seasons surprise for me is Jim Beam Winter Reserve. Here in MD it is $25 and it is maybe the best whiskey I’ve had in a while. I can actually smell cinnamon and vanilla. And it delivers on the palate as well. Cheers!
My three winter pickups are Middle west dark pumpernickel rye..... New riff malted eye.... and Sagamore Rye sherry finished .....I opened my peerless double oak rye early because I couldn't wait... I'll see the rest on the 20th 18:16
Love it! Your first and last picks are the top two I have been planning on taking for our largest family Christmas gathering in many years. Should probably take along my bottle of the Cedar Ridge since it's very close to home. Might take MM46 and MM46CS and let folks blend to find their sweet spots. Also planning a tequila tasting session (most likely followed by me cranking out a variety of tequila cocktails) with Tapatio blanco, Arette reposado, and Siete Leguas anejo. Thanks, and have a wonderful holiday season!
Angel’s Envy Rye is absolutely my Christmas whiskey. From decorating the tree to Christmas Day, it’s my go to. My Sam’s Club has it for $60! It does make a great old fashion too.
In the event that another chance doesn't present itself, please let me wish y'all happy holidays (or Merry Christmas if I'm not being too rude). In any event, this was yet another great show as always! Cheers!
I bring koloa hawaiian kauai coffee rum it is a chocolate espresso. so good. or perhaps an Irish whiskey and baileys. Or for a unique experience take a vanilla chai tea bag and soak it in their maker's mark glass.
I also love AE rye for Christmas. It's at the back of the cabinet right now and coming forward shortly. As Eagle Rare is easy and inexpensive to get in the UK, I'd probably bring that to gatherings along with Sagamore Rum Cask, for the sweet rye.
I think that my favorite things that came back from my BFH trip to KY last July (with the Four Roses pick) was a Disco 11 (and I didn’t know what was coming with Disco 12), and on your recommendation, the Hard Truth Chocolate Malt…and the Caramel Malt that was beside it. Now if I was smart, I would have cleared the shelf. Still waiting for Seelbach’s to get that DO back in stock…I have a notification set and everything.
You made me do it! I grabbed a Glen and ran downstairs to check out the Angel's. It is spicy fun. There's a lot of mint tea there. I have all that you chose but the Vintners and a couple of the Hard Truth bottles. (The double Oaked Rye is nice!) All good choices. Cheers!
Yes! I took a bottle of WT R70th to a Thanksgiving gathering at a friend’s house this year. Seemed etymologically appropriate AND the flavor profile just screams, “Happy Holidays emmereffers!” 😀 I also pick up both ER10 and EHtSmB whenever I see it at SRP so I can similarly bring a bottle of one or the other to gatherings as well. Good on you guys for doing the same. And Westward def crushes it. IMO they are the flag bearer of American single malt. Will raise a glass with a friend to you guys this week during our Friday Night Flights in acknowledgement of the friendly and positive vibes inherent to whiskey culture regardless of locality. Cheers and happy holidays to you both. 🍻
In the Northern suburbs of Chicago, Hard Truth is easy to find, the rest, not so much. I have a Hard Truth High Road Rye, Eagle Rage and found the WT Jimmy's 70th at a grocery store for $42.99, the other two bottles were on sale at Binny's for $39.99. All 3 bottles are so different and amazing.
Great list, last year we had that exact Angel's Envy paired with Sagamore Spirits Double Barreled Rye. It was a great contrast as the Angel's envy was brighter and delightful as an appetizer, and the Sagamore Double was the darker dessert pour. Think the Hard Truth is a pretty close comp. Really can't go wrong, but I do love the beautiful Sagamore Bottle as a holiday accent. My only other suggestion would be something like the Bardstown Origin BIB or anything that goes well on the rocks. Non-Whiskey nerds may very well want a rocks pour and you don't want to stray into "snob" territory by shaming a pour. Happy Holidays Y'all!
1000% agree on the Angel's Envy Rye - it's Xmas in a glass! Sooooo good! I tend to bring a couple diverse bottles to family gatherings in hopes that they get enjoyed - I'm really the only whiskey enthusiast in my family. On the downside, I don't get to nerd out about whiskey; on the upside, I don't look like such a drunk when I bring stuff for everyone to try! 😅
I got my mom one of the glow in the dark smoke wagon bottles they make a nice gift and good conversation piece when you get them glowing. The whiskey is just ok though
I will definitely be taking the Turkey 70th anniversary. We were going to be doing a Turkey tasting so I was also going to take the RR 10 with the LL/ME laser code and one of my Limited Editions. But it's morphed into a Michter's tasting so I have to regroup. So maybe a Bomberger's or a 10 yr rye.
I'm so glad there's appreciation being shown for Angel's Envy Rye. I love that stuff and drink it all year. A local grocery store had them on clearance for $45 so you best believe I stocked up! 😁
This would be too easy for me because the part of my family that drinks mainly buys really cheap whiskey. I would bring 8 bottles of cheap George Dickel because I know they like that and then one bottle of Buffalo Trace for my father in law. The 10th bottle I would bring would be in that 130 proof range like my J.Mattingly Not Toast McGhost at 132 proof. This one would be just for me to enjoy by myself as they don’t care for high proof whiskey and besides they would already have 9 bottles to enjoy themselves. Thanks for posting another great video.
5:20 I like the HT bourbon, but I *love* the Sweet Mash Rye - and I'm a bourbon guy. That's all I've had from Hard Truth, though I have recently seen the High Road rye here and eventually I want to try it, partly because it's cheaper than the Sweet Mash. 11:23 My mama used to make baked apples. ❤❤❤ 12:28 I am probably the only person in the world who would find it disappointing if someone gave me Blanton's or Eagle Rare. 😂 15:41 It is amazing to me that Jimmy Russell's been at Wild Turkey for 70 years. I'm not even that old! 🙂 If I were making such a list, I'd absolutely have some Knob Creek on it. The 9 year would be great for people who aren't heavily into whisky, and a store pick would be great for those who are. And even a store pick doesn't cost too much - 60 bucks or so.
Good video ... I hadn't thought of the American single malt idea, so I'll see if I can find the Cedar Ridge to bring to a party this weekend. As a suggestion for something to bring that people would recognize that is lower proof, how about a wheated bourbon that is more or less findable, Weller's Special Reserve?
Great episode....And y'all are spot on with Hard Truth. I have about 50% of their whiskeys plus cinnamon vodka and coconut rums. I am 2 1/2 hours from their distillery and have probably been 20 times. They have some of the best ryes on the market. Hope you review the Maple Brulee Rye.....Very unique and phenominal!
I'll give your list a 6 out of 10, only because Cedar Ridge and Hard Truth aren't available in Oregon 😉 Anything Westward is pretty great, a special mention would be the SLB pick, WOW! I was able to get a bottle of the Jimmy Russel WT, I haven't opened it, because I should have bought 2 when they were available, so I could keep one as a shelfer.
Visiting family and friends up there next week, and will be visiting the distillery (among others). Do you have any recommendations? Edit: Westward, to be specific
I have a rule that I have a reputation about: If I bring a bottle, it’s a new bottle. And when I crack a new bottle at someone’s house, it stay’s at their house. Many of my friends drink Tequila or Irish/Canadian Whisky. So when I go over there, I know I have a bottle there. I also have been trying to secretly convert my friends into bourbon drinkers. Let them hold onto my bottle for me… wink wink. I occasionally get a text from them. But that also means I watch my budget when i bring a bottle. It has to be something I wont miss and wont get too offended if they mix it with Diet Coke. But still something enjoyable for sipping and good for the occasion. Woodinville 100% rye is like an apple pie. It’s also made in the state i currently live in, with locally sourced grains and they do their own distillation. Approachable 90 proof and $40 bucks isn’t too much to buy and leave.
@@Aphabet21 This is a great point because I have done the opposite and it is a bad look. Bring a bottle, no one really gets into it, and then you feel like a cheapskate when you take it back home with you. Better to go a bit budget but Good and leave it than try to impress.
@ yessir. It’s never good form for someone to take their party favors back with them. I usually grab a backup under my home bar and then replace it later. But I’ve also grabbed from the store with the intent for the event. My limit is $70 for a bottle and that means it’s gotta be a good party.
Also hard to get and overpriced but way better than Blantons SiB is The gold version. I really enjoy it if I have it. Wouldn’t overpay of course. Thanks f oh the content. Cheers!!
Depends on the gathering. If there are actually whiskey drinkers there, that will appreciate those expensive bottles, then maybe. But, if not, and there is only novice or beginner, or NON whiskey drinkers, then those are wasted on them. Just my humble opinion.
Fair points. Our context is that our family does enjoy whiskey and whiskey cocktails, trying new things, etc but they don’t nerd out on it. A complete newbie crowd or non-whiskey drinkers would require a different list for sure.
$80 is "retail" here. A lot of stores do tend to mark it up to $125-150+ though (and it sits on shelves at those prices as local secondary is $85-100).
@ if those each have specific dates on them, they could mean something to specific collectors. Looking for bourbon children’s birthday fill dates, or anniversaries, etc.
@@stuffandwhiskey Also 80 here in Ohio, state controlled. Was just mentioning that it's 70 at actual BT for anyone curious. It was 63 earlier this year but they raised the prices in the summer of a lot of their allocated offerings. EHT went from 45 to 50, Blantons from 63 to 70. I got an EHT for 45 in April, went in July and Oct and they were 50.
I've never been much of a fan of family gatherings (especially since my parents passed away) and the level of whisky appreciation varies enormously, so a top ten would be difficult. My sister and her husband just dabble a little, so I've poured them tastes of a few things, but only bought them bottles of Armagnac and a Compass Box Oak Cross. My nephew, on the other hand, is more keen, so I gave him a 37 year old Bunnahabhain for his wedding and he will get first pick of my bottles when I die. I have also arranged for my niece's children to get specific bottles when they reach drinking age (no details here, in case anyone reads this and spoils the surprise!), but I won't be disappointed if they sell them or give them away instead of drinking them: tastes differ. I'm trying to come up with a similar gift for my nephew's child, but haven't found the right one yet. As far as other parties are concerned, if I know nothing I'll usually take a peated Scotch and an unpeated Scotch - one for each half of the room! For more bourbon-themed bottle shares, it is usually something cheap, but interesting, and something a bit pricier/difficult to get, like your Blanton's suggestion. The Angel's Envy Rye is just for me!
@chasesimmons6451 Hell ya bro! They answered a question of mine on one of their Q&A videos last year but I didn't get a whole video😅! This is a good channel too!

Wish Hard Truth and Cedar Ridge was in Atlanta.
Hoping they both grow as does their distribution.
High Road Rye is on my husband's list ! I'm sure I'll love it too. We have loved everything we've gotten from Hard Truth!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and cheers to you too!
Angels Envy is a great dessert pour! Maple, toffee, butter rum lifesavers! Local Sam’s sells it for 65.00 a bottle. Great choice!
Wow, Thanks so much for the callout! I feel extra special today! Awesome video and awesome people…Cheers and happy holidays!!!

Still haven’t seen the jimmy russell 70th in northern Illinois.
That’s a bummer! There were a lot of bottles released. Hopefully you can find one!
I’m loving the American single malts.

I keep a case of Eagle Rare in my trunk for my holiday travels.
For some reason, the Cedar Ridge is on clearance at one of my local stores. Picked up 2 bottles for 19.96 each.
What!?!?!? That's the lowest I've ever seen their base bourbon for here in Iowa, near the distillery. Have never seen the single malt below $50.
I'm so glad there's appreciation being shown for Angel's Envy Rye. I love that stuff and drink it all year. A local grocery store had them on clearance for $45 so you best believe I stocked up! 😁
That price is crazy good!
Woodford DO, Wilderness trail, Jim Beam Winter Blend , Jack Daniels 100 proof and Eagle Rare

Only one of those we can get in ontario is Angel's envy rye, $97 CDN, so i might try that one.
A fair price for the pour if you like sweet whiskey!
Great list. I’ve only had 4 on this list. I like 3 of the 4 I’ve tried.

Family mostly drinks Jameson. Only two nephews actually appreciate good whiskey so I only have to bring a decent bottle.
