Hey Nick, those 7 words on the Listerine are the original meanings ascribed to the original rainbow pride flag colours by creator Gilbert Baker in 1978. They have meaning.
I actually didn't know this. That's really clever of Listerine to do. I would have loved for them to do something more commonly understood (I'm pretty sure not a chunk of people even within the gay community get the allurance), but I'm still pretty proud they went in a little more than the others.
Oh just stop! Love your community and how we represent. Stop assuming everyone with pride has to be a historian. We can have imperfect voices and still have a impact. Take a seat.
Good commentary about how companies changing how they “acknowledge” pride versus the hypercapitalizing on pride merch & iconography for profits on the other end. Like there’s so much to be aid but you summed it up well. It worries us sometimes when we see allyship fitting back to taboo/fringe on the corporate level
Omg Nick! The word “queer” means strange, that’s why straight people called us Queers and then decades later we took that slur and started calling ourselves that.
Absolut ads have always been iconic. They went across culture and time with their old bottle campaign. I saved one of their Pride ads because it's major. Yes, it's just the Absolut bottle with a Pride flag, but it's an internationally touted vodka company and they blatantly aligned themselves with us. Something that would have never been done in the day. 😊❤
honestly, given all the controversy (conservative hissy fits) around bud light last year, i'm pretty impressed with them coming out with a campaign that mentions queens (which right wingers will certainly take to mean drag queens). i was kind of expecting them to do nothing this year to appease the bigots, so even tho this isn't an intense ad by any means, i'm still proud (ha) of them for not caving to the hate they received. plus you know that a huge chunk of bud light's customer base is old white dudes who 'can't remember all the letters' so giving them a phrase to help remember it might have a genuine function lol
Please make longer videos because your commentary is amazing. Loving this, I don’t think I have seen any of these ads. I would love for you to make a video every day 🎉
The words on the Listerine bottle are what each of the colors of the flag represent. The flag was created by Gilbert Baker and Gilbert associated each of these words with the corresponding color.
I agree as annoying as corporate pride is, it's kinda spooky to not see it this year. Who knows if the companies themselves actually care about queer people, but it makes sense that they would want their marketing to appeal to the widest audience possible. The fact that nowadays they think supporting LGBTQ+ is more likely to harm than help their business is disconcerting.
The thing with the Whopper ad is that we acknowledge that two top buns, or two bottom buns, is the "incorrect way" to serve a burger and that a top bun and bottom bun is the correct way. That's pretty much the opposite of support for the gay community.
I hear you on that, but I think that some might say that many have “acknowledged” (wrongly, of course, but still) for a long time that the “correct“ way to be in a relationship is man and woman, one of each type, and ultimately there’s nothing actually particularly wrong with using the same shape piece of bread for both sides of a burger, so I can see how it’s showing support for “whatever works for those involved is the right way to do it”
@@LilyWohlMezzo-Soprano I'm curious how many upside buns you've eaten in your lifetime? Dough RISES. There is very clearly a top, and there is very clearly a bottom, to a baked good. I'm pretty sure you've never flipped over a cupcake and eaten the paper part of a cupcake before you eat the frosting. Stop being daft. You know full well that Burger King doesn't give a shit one way or the other. What are you defending them for?
@@ghosty4 Why are you so angry about a comment that just offered a nuanced take (which is not the same thing as defending a corporation)? Rainbow capitalism obviously sucks, but you can be critical of that without feeling the need to perform this weird little crusade about baked goods. Yes, I'm sure most people don't turn their cupcakes upside down to eat them, because the frosting would be more likely to fall off. Unless you're making your burgers out of cupcakes, that seems pretty irrelevant though. Dough RISES because of the aerobic activity of yeast, so… what? It makes nice little air pockets, not metaphysical “this way up” signs. I personally couldn't give less of a shit about whether a burger is served with the top and bottom half of a bun or not - it's all just bread. I've absolutely eaten burgers upside down before, as well as ones with two bottom buns, and I'll do it again lmao 😎 It's basically the same form factor as an English muffin - do you also find those inexplicably enraging, or are you done tilting at windmills?
Oh Nick. Young Nick. Those words on the Listerine bottle are the meaning of the colours on the Pride flag. The original flag had two extra stripes. A pink one for sex and a teal on for magic. Apparently pink/sex got the boot because they couldn't find pink flag fabric or something. Not sure what happened to teal/magic but honestly that just sounds dumb so probably for the best.
I will say, EW does a whole month of Pride magazines highlighting queer celebrities that have made an impact in the past year and that's more than Chipotle will ever do lol
Artistic expression is so subjective, but I found myself agreeing with Nick's interpretations every time. Thank you for highlighting these ads, Nick: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I might have missed some if not for you! 💚
Nick!!! Ew gays! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I almost choked on my lunch!!! 🤣 This was a super fun video. Please continue to do more reviews. Thank you for making my day! Love you! ❤
Hi Nick, do you get any insides from Bob about Madonna or there is some sort of contract that forbids him to talk anything about her or her last tour? It would be very interesting to know. Thank you in advance ✌️
Totally agree with what you said about the decrease in companies/brands acknowledging pride. While rainbow capitalism is obviously problematic for many reasons, the lack of acknowledgment just further highlights the success of the right-wing culture warriors in getting society to regress in regards to LGBTQ+ acceptance which is super depressing.
Okay so I’m glad these companies are doing at least something for pride month but damn they are really slacking! Love your commentary as always! ❤also what is your go to chipotle bowl order!?
former chipotle marketing executive here, and I would like to explain: the burrito represents a chipotle burrito and the rainbow represents gay pride. love what makes you real means that you should care deeply about the things that make you authentic
I don't think this actually needed explaining? We know it's a burrito. We know it's in a rainbow wrapper. We know what the words "Love what makes you real" mean.
I know it's a last minute idea but if Jaymes Mansfield is available she would be an amazing queen to have on for a gay history and culture video for Pride month, maybe a trivia style with other friends?!? Also, agree with the sentiment even if it's as simple as adding the rainbow to show support, it's better than nothing. Happy Pride!! 🌈
Nick sparks joy with me, I am keeping him. Do ask, do tell ❤️. Yet another fantastic episode - love the music. The music is always the best for Nick’s segments. How about the necklines on his t’s? Does it get any better? Perfect segment to kick Pride Month off. ❤🌈 🕊️ 💪🏻
I decorated the shrubs specifically for the two male ducks living here & dining at my feeding pans. Damn ducks do not like performative political decor, one came back with a GIRL! Well played Messrs Duck, well played
Hey Nick. I didn't scroll through all the comments to see if anyone mentioned this yet. The EW logo that you showed is covered by a true 7-color rainbow, not a PRIDE rainbow which only uses 6 colors. The Pride rainbow omits the Indigo that is between the Blue and the Violet on a real rainbow. Thanks.
I'm with Nick on Chipotle! They can do NO wrong! Even when some of their restaurants are out in these streets giving people salmonella, I don't care! I'm still going to eat their delicious food!!!
I was so excited to think Chipotle would actually USE rainbow foil for the burritos, but it’s just another empty promise that is a byproduct of rainbow washing 😫
The Corps coming through is legit. I remember before and after the enactment of DADT. And the tragedies that prompted it. I know a couple queer Marines. They go hard. As Marines do. 😊❤
Hey Nick, those 7 words on the Listerine are the original meanings ascribed to the original rainbow pride flag colours by creator Gilbert Baker in 1978. They have meaning.
Came to say this 😅
This!
Good job!

I won't rest until Nick get a show on The History Channel. The first show where the host learn more than everyone else!
Fr!!! He needs to get signed !
“Where Am I? with Nick Smith”
😂
🤣🫶🙌
That would actually be so fun. Somebody amazed by the new things he learns alongside you, not an expert who teaches you, the dumb viewer.
Dr Pepper not taking Mr Salts last name in marriage is the type of lore i'm here for.
Underrated comment. 😂😂😂
Nick finally got a backdrop from a victorian painting to match his consumptive frame and rich ghost woman style
Nick not understanding things is equal parts entertaining and stressful.
The words on the listerine bottle are actually what Gilbert Baker said the colors stood for when he created the original pride flag.
Thank you that someone else knew this 🎉
Thank you!
That Chipotle ad could have been fixed so easily by just saying "Love what makes you YOU" get me in that ad room!
"Do ask. Do tell. How bout them apples?"
Nick, you are the cutest! 😂💖🤣
How expensive could it be to include a Good Will Hunting clip in a government ad? 😁.
💚
Full stop, i kinda live for the Entertainment Weekly Logo
Its just like *says ew in gay*
Nick unknowingly roasting the original meanings ascribed to the rainbow is killing me 🤣
It's the ignorance for me. 😊❤
Nick breaking character mid-joke is everything 😂
It's so cute when he cracks himself up.
Chipotle could’ve just done a ‘Roll With The Times’ or ‘ChipotSLAYYYYY’
Nice! Both quality ideas.
@@Buckboy2024 Thank you!
I just need to know if they've sent Kim Chi a PR package yet to make up for the trauma of sending Trixie one and not her a few years ago. 😊❤

That's what I picked up too! Dr. Pepper is known for being the 'weird' soda, so they were doing a play on words.
Nick's Best Quote "2 BOTTOMS NEED TO BE IN THERAPY "😮😮😮😅
I know a lot of Alphabet People that drink beer! Myself included. Anyway, let’s get beers tonight, queen
“Listerine, which is pretty big in the gay community” - Nick’s videos are my gateway drug into the gay community and I love it
Is Listerine really big in the gay community? Why? I mean, I use it but not because I'm gay
Gay Culture exists on a spectrum between Listerine and Absolut 🔥

Waiting for Lizzo's comentary LOL
Chipotle also had a shirt for pride 2017 that was rainbow burrito with the caption “homo estas”
I die everytime Nick says "Whhat?" In that voice😂😂😂
That Dr. Pepper can should have been top/bottom/side!
Ok now I’m going to just imagine a board meeting between Maya Angelou and the Listerine Marketing Department. Sounds genius
Fun video, Nick and your closing was on point! Keep up the good work!

No kidding, gay cultural history is important.
Lizzo was right. We need to fix the education system in America.
Still would love to know the “other uses” for Listerine… I just thought it was a dental rinse to aid in fresher breath.🤷♂️
One thing is for certain, Nick...your video will outlast any or all of these ads!
I feel like the Marines could have just done a uniform or helmet that was in rainbow camo. No bullets needed.
Agreed.
I thought those were crayons instead of bullets 😂
@@addiegraves3😂😂😂
@nimue325 Hahaha I'm glad someone else knows the joke
The rainbow bullets though 😱😱😱!
Horrible, just horrible.
Yeah that’s actually offensive
„..sport?…spirit!“ 😂
Last year I saw a candle with a rainbow and it said Ally. I thought that is the most straight white woman thing I’ve ever seen on sale during Pride.
Let's grab some beers tonight queens! sounds like something an undercover agent in the gay village would say😂

I agree with you about the Rainbow 🌈 bullets. Wrong on every level.
This was fun - loved it - a bit poignant at times, Pride has been hitting different these past few years....
Love the Nick vs Chipotle convo 😂 Yeah, it kinda doesn’t make sense lol
why does the production on this video look like it is from 20 years ago, can't stop laughing

The Dr Pepper ad should have been Top, Bottom, Side
Just imagine Nick and Philomena Cunk having a conversation
the words on the listerine bottle are what each color of the flag represents
Last stripe on Listerine bottle should be "squirt"
“Whopper of a month” would have probs been better for Burger King
DO ask, DO tell.🤣

"How bout them apples". I love you so much!
The Question of 2024: Who IS Dr. Pepper??? LOLSSSS🤣🤣🤣
Pride ads never make me feel acknowledged, just a little pissed off that my sexual orientation is used to make sales.
Awe sweet!! I needed a laugh!! Loves ya Nick! ❤
Happy Pride Nick!
Love the Marines read! The bullet though. Did they even think ammunition? Opportunity missed? Or was it on purpose?
